19-year-old shoots himself while taking selfie
Bobo sends us a link from Houston, Texas where 19-year-old father of two Deleon Alonso Smith shot himself in the throat with a handgun that he and his cousin “found” earlier in the day. Smith was taking a “selfie” at the time of his negligent discharge, and he thought the gun wasn’t loaded.
In the article and in the video, the reporter says that he shot himself accidentally and keeps talking about the gun like it has a mind of it’s own. But, folks with any experience with firearms call it a negligent discharge, because young Smith didn’t have enough training with firearms to have the proper respect for it. Apparently he didn’t know that the trigger is not a good place to rest your finger when you’re not intending to shoot something.
I guess we’ll need a new law making it illegal for a 19-year-old to possess a firearm…oh, wait. Maybe it would be a better idea to have a training program to teach youngsters respect for firearms and what to do when they “find” a gun. You know, like the NRA offers.

That DEA video has been going around for quite a few years. I read that the DEA fired him, because he was an undercover agent, and since he allowed himself to be photographed for this (alleged) safety class, he could no longer go deep. Of course, shooting himself while saying he is the only trained in firearm safety probably did not help his case.

Um, no, because their father is dead, the kids qualify for SSI until they’re 18. If I’m not mistaken it’s about $1000/month each.
It pains the hell out of me to now see two children receive that much money for that long a time. I’d have hoped SBS (Suicide by Stupidity) would have denied such a healthy amount of taxpayer money for the occurrence. Please, Bro. Jonn, PLEASE enlighten us as to how this works. Do the children of ANYONE who leaves this earth early for ANY reason merit that kind of cash for the surviving children? How much had this fool paid into SS for this to happen? Concur. A 19 y/o of any race who “finds” a pistol and then wants a “selfie” of himself/herself playing with same just doesn’t strike me as someone who’d have 18 mo of “on the books” work credit between ages 16 and 19.
Of course, if that’s true that also has no effect on eligibility for AFDC/TARP/(whatever it’s called now), subsidized/free housing, SNAP (formerly foodstamps), Medicaid, and various other Federal and state assistance programs. Something tells me that the kids’ mom isn’t likely to be working herself and making enough to support a family of 3, regardless of her race/ethnicity. And I’ll go out on a limb and say that it’s IMO unlikely she’s independently wealthy enough to have investment/other income over the legal limit for eligibility to those programs.

We taught our kids from early on that GUNS ARE NOT TOYS. They went on bird/rabbit hunts and got to see what happens in real life when you shoot something. They have a very healthy respect for all weapons.

So the deceased and Cousin Tyrone merely found the gun that accidentally went off. Seems like we have heard that M. O. in other cases. Now the po-po are “investigating” where the weapon was found??? Could this lead to a lengthy investigation as to the origin of the weapon, but nobody needs to know for the time being. Maybe the weapon was co-axially mounted with the camera, same as the old M-48 tanks with the 90 and the .30 aligned together.
Don’t look for a reasonably soon conclusion as to where the weapon was found. Stories such as this need time to be made up. We can pretty well count on Jessie or Al to make an appearance if it was discovered the weapon had belonged to some poor homeowner missing a gun from a burglary, but failed to report it.
