Seymour Hersh is a crackpot
Everyone has been sending me these links to articles about Seymour Hersh charging that Obama lied about the assassination of bin laden. Seriously, people? Seymour Hersh? Hersh is the fellow who charged that Darth Cheney had a secret assassination team that was taking out the Bush Administration’s political enemies. His sources? Well they were anonymous – in other words he was using the voices in his head.
The latest Hersh “scandal”?
The principal claims that Hersh’s article makes, which largely rely on the assertions of a single, unnamed, retired senior U.S. intelligence official [voices in his head], are:
• That the 2011 U.S. Navy SEAL raid on the Abbottabad compound where bin Laden was hiding in northern Pakistan was not a firefight in which SEALs went into a dangerous and unknown situation, but a setup in which Pakistan’s military had been holding bin Laden prisoner in Abbottabad for five years and simply made him available to the SEALs who flew in helicopters to the compound on the night of the raid.
• An officer from Pakistan’s powerful military intelligence agency ISI accompanied the SEALs on the raid and showed them around the Abbottabad compound, and the only shots fired that night were the ones that the SEALs fired to kill bin Laden.
• A “walk in” to the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad tipped off the CIA that bin Laden was living in the Abbottabad compound, and it was not true — despite the statements of multiple U.S. officials after the raid — that the CIA had traced back one of bin Laden’s couriers to the Abbottabad compound and built a circumstantial case that bin Laden was living there.
• Saudi Arabia was financing bin Laden’s upkeep in his Abbottabad compound.
• A Pakistani army doctor obtained DNA from bin Laden that proved he was in Abbottabad, proof that was provided to the States so that all the supposed uncertainty — cited by Obama administration officials after the raid — about whether bin Laden was actually living in the compound was a lie.
• The “most blatant lie,” according to Hersh, was that “Pakistan’s two most senior military leaders — General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, chief of the army staff, and General Ahmed Shuja Pasha, director general of the ISI — were never informed” in advance of the U.S. raid on the bin Laden compound.
Yeah, well, if you thought that Hersh was the king of the black helicopter theorists during the Bush Administration, what would make you think that he has been rehabilitated? Yes, I want to believe all of the crazy shit in regards to Obama, but I’m not ready to climb aboard the Hersh Crazy-Train to Blackhelicoptertown. He wrote one decent expose` forty years ago and he thinks that it gives him the credibility to write whatever he wants these days.

You do realize that copper in a cone shaped form magnifies the electromagnetic signals coming form the outside, right?
Yep !!!!
Skippy, you are going to have to supply a lightning rod and grounding wire with those copper foil hats. If you don’t, your customers will light up like Christmas trees. (They might like that, though.)
That is the idea there is a Big Supply or should be. Nothing wrong with unloading a few crack pots. Hence the name of our company Darwin conspiracys,,, evolution at work.
My comment sounds a little sadistic. So I’ll clarify we will put a disclaimer stating wearing sad device may result in death if used outside during a thunderstorm
What I find most disturbing about the CNN article is that its author used the words farrago and risible in it. Who is the wide, wide world of sports knows the words risible and farrago? You are on your honor.
I do, and I also know words such as taradiddle and embonpoint, but I was a literature major many many years ago before making the switch to agricultural science. While these types of words still slip in occasionally, I try to minimize them; they’re fun, but they strike most people as pretentious.
And generally when I see them in published articles (as opposed to fiction), the author IS being pretentious, and trying to show off how smart he is rather than backing up his points or claims with factual evidence.
As daddy always said, “An ounce of pretention is worth a pound of manure!”
And you might say that in going from a literature major to agricultural science major, I did go from pretension to manure!
Wasn’t it Churchill who said to be an effective speaker, avoid Latin polysyllabics and use the short Germanic words?
Eschew obfuscation.
Well, hell, who doesn’t know taradiddle and embonpoint? There must be a dozen comments I posted here over the years containing them. In fact, unless memory fails me, I used both in a single sentence once. I wasn’t a lit major but I used to read the dictionary for fun. What I learned from that experience is that memory fails on word and definition retention if the words go unused. And now that I know what farragon means, I shall promptly forget it.
Half of my comment was bullshit. I’ll leave it to you to figure which half.
I have the other side of the memory coin – remembering what the word means and groping uselessly towards trying to remember what the heck it is, again…
Well we do know that you did use them both in a sentence one, A/C. Beyond that…
Pretense can be fun if used judiciously.
I just got that, even though I read your comment a couple of hours ago. Damn, I really am slow.
Since taradiddle, farrago, embonpoint, and risible are frequently found in Georgette Heyer’s romances, I am indeed en famille with them. But I prefer to stick to Shakespeare most of the time.
And you’re right – it’s ridiculous in news prose, only appropriate in fiction.
I do like Georgette Heyer. Her romances, but also her mystery novels – she just had a real gift for capturing personalities in very humorous ways!
Growing up rather deaf, I usually had my nose in a book, which led to a very strange vocabulary. Of course, learning words from books doesn’t help much with pronunciation. Made myself look like an idiot quite often using the right word but the strangest pronunciations in the world…
But yeah, it always comes down to writing for the audience. ‘Farrago’ is appropriate for a literary magazine, for fiction, but not for reporting. I could tolerate it if it were political commentary but depending on the location/publication I’d probably still think it’s pretty pretentious.
Yes, he is a crackpot. But, it is fun to sit back and watch some blue on blue action rather than the usual blue piling on red…
For an alternate POV, check back here at 1145.
The guy is an absolute fruitcake with no care in the world about truth.
Get Hersh working on Jade Helm 15, stat! He’ll uncover the truth in no time…
It just goes to show that tin foil hat country doesn’t always come with trailers and rusting cars in the yard.
A crowd of wackos like him sounds like this to me:
Who stole my pink tin foil hat? Looks like it will be needed soon. Very soon. Spray bottles are at the ready.
Well, OWB – you can always recreate it. (smile)

Wasn’t Hersh a TWA-800 Truther, too (i.e. people who believe TWA 800 was shot down?)
Pretty sure that was Pierre Sallinger and Accuracy in Media vice Hersh.
Sorta like ol whats his name at Veteran Today and Yawn
Read it on the Internet. Must be legit.
I can see why some of you guys are conflicted – either can either support your man Obama in this kerfuffle, or admit that a reporter you’ve excoriated for decades might be on to something. Damned if you do, damned id you don’t……
While I wish Mr. Hersch’s article was better sourced, remember he was responsible for breaking the story about My Lai. A massacre that a then young MAJ Colin Powell investigated for the Army and found nothing! I tend to believe Hersch over the government any day. The issue could easily be resolved. If Hersch is wrong, then leak a few select death photos of Bin Laden. You have just exposed Hersch as a liar and no administration will ever have to deal with his ilk again. Now, if he is telling the truth, attack him personally, by members of the JSOC and CIA community ( communities that make their living off lying out of operational necessity). Am I skeptical of his story: yes. Do I believe the raid happened as DEVGRU and the Obama Administration said it did: absolutely not!
