The media and guns

| December 24, 2012

I guess NBC’s David Gregory fancies himself in the vanguard of gun control in the media. He confronted Wayne LaPierre, from the NRA yesterday on Meet the Press with what looks like a 30-round AR15 magazine.

DavidGregory

The problem is that the NBC studio is in downtown DC a few blocks from the White House and large box magazines (more than 10 round capacity) are illegal in the District to even possess;

D.C. Official Code § 7-2506.01
“(b) No person in the District shall possess, sell, or transfer any large capacity ammunition feeding device regardless of whether the device is attached to a firearm. For the purposes of this subsection, the term “large capacity ammunition feeding device” means a magazine, belt, drum, feed strip, or similar device that has a capacity of, or that can be readily restored or converted to accept, more than 10 rounds of ammunition.

I’m pretty sure that the law means “no person” when it says “no person” and that Gregory is indeed a person, regardless of his intent of bringing that magazine into the District.

Besides breaking the law, Gregory wanted to put his hypocrisy on display by poking LaPierre about his idea for having armed personnel in schools to protect the children. The Weekly Standard had this to say about that;

But when it comes to Gregory’s own kids, however, they are secured every school day by armed guards.

The Gregory children go to school with the children of President Barack Obama, according to the Washington Post. That school is the co-ed Quaker school Sidwell Friends.

According to a scan of the school’s online faculty-staff directory, Sidwell has a security department made up of at least 11 people. Many of those are police officers, who are presumably armed.

Moreover, with the Obama kids in attendance, there is a secret service presence at the institution, as well.

It’s safe to say the school where Gregory sends his kids is a high-security school. It’s just odd he’d want it for his kids, but wouldn’t be more open to it for others.

But then who is surprised?

Meanwhile, Derek sends us a link to the the Westchester and Rockland counties, New York newspaper, The Journal News which thought it was important to inform their readers where legal owners live by providing them an interactive map which gives the full name and street address of each legal gun owner for some stupid reason. If I were a non-gun owner, I’d be upset, because now the criminals know which houses not to rob and which are less risk. What does the Journal expect? That neighborhoods will run out of town the folks who follow the law and get permits for their guns?

Somehow, I guess they think they’re providing a public service, but all they’re doing is showing how they’re creepy little busy-bodies who don’t understand the discussion at all and should have nothing to say, because everything they’re saying is misguided bullshit.

David Gregory is only the second generation in his family to walk upright

A little response to the editor of the journal news. I got it from Ace.mu.nu

Green Thumb

Par for the course.

Spade

People have been getting responses from MPD about this. Evidently NBC asked if they could do this, MPD said “no” and NBC did it anyway.

QMC

Guess who sends his kid to a school with armed security guards?

OldSoldier54

I am hard pressed to not despise people like Gregory. Astonishingly, they never seem to see their hypocrisy.

FatCircles0311

Libtard is as Libtard does. My hope is these idiots finally get a real deal machinegun on air some time and law enforcement does it job by busting the utter piss out of them. I’m tired of these jackwagons.

CI Roller Dude

Well, I’m sure they mean that nobody else should have them things….. if the dumbass was in Calif, he’d be breaking the law to.

Ex-PH2

I read the link to the blog, and the article published with the maps.

That woman has endangered the life of every child in those communities. What in the hell is wrong with her? If it’s so important to do something like that, why didn’t she do that after the Aurora shooting?

Oh, that’s right! That was before the election, before the annoying one was reaffirmed as being supremely annoying.

This hysteria has to stop. It’s turning into insanity, and it is not on this side of the fence.

USMCE8Ret

…and so it begins. Full names and addresses of legal gun owners are being published.

What next?

So legal gun owners have been catapulted into a category of people that warrant having their names/addresses published, like the listing of registered sex offenders in a geographic area? I believe a can of violating a right to privacy has just been opened.

James

Merry Christmas all!

OldSoldier54

@11 USMCE8Ret:

“I believe a can of violating a right to privacy has just been opened.”

Yep. Looks like a serious lawsuit in the making. At the minimum.

AW1 Tim

I am given to understand two things.

1.) There is an online petition to the White House to have Mr. Gregory arrested and prosecuted.

2.) Certain parties have seen fit to publish the names and addresses of all the folks who work for the newspaper which released the info about gun owners.

Merry Christmas, assmaggots.

Ex-PH2

You guys do realize the following, right?

1 – The people whose names and addresses have been published by the newspaper owned by Gannett Publications can hold Gannett legally liable for anything that happens to them and/or their children, families and homes following that publication.

2 – It’s perfectly acceptable to write a letter of protest to the owners of Gannett Publications about the editor’s actions and send a copy to the other newspapers and news services all over the country, as well as the FCC.

3 – Start an online petition for the White House/Administration to tell the FCC to shut down Twitter and Facebook to new entries only until things cool off, as well as telling the Dept of Justice to look into online threats by tweeters and FBers toward members of the NRA.

These things are legal, and you’re within your rights to do them. I think a mass mailing to the White House addressing this issue, as well as the issue of threats of violence by online posters, would be a REAL GOOD IDEA. Kind of like “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington”, only there’s no Mr. Smith, it’s just American citizens exercising their rights.

You all have a nice, quiet Christmas. Be grateful for what you do have.

I resupplied on Magpul 30-round magazines last summer. I have a sufficiency of 20 and 30-round magazines, metal and plastic. If you waited until now, you weren’t paying attention. Same with HK91/G3 magazines.

Cajun

Gannett? The publishers of the Millitary Times? The ones that ran 1911 and AR buyers’ guides in their off duty section…FRONT PAGE of the Off Duty section?!

The official reply from David Gregory and NBC after running it through their legal department:

“Silly proles! Rules are for little people and we have an agenda to push!”

@19

A village is missing it’s idiot. 😉

I’d be upset as a gun owner in those NY counties too. Now anyone who’s insane enough to plan a killing will have knowledge of where these weapons are and can easily watch the house, wait until it’s empty of people, and get a five-finger discount on a lethal weapon. If it happens that the gun isn’t properly locked in a safe, it’ll be incentive for more news flashes of how every weapon should be taken away from citizens, and not just assault rifles.

Old Trooper

The question should be; “where did Gregory get that 30 round magazine”? If it was brought across state lines, then there might be some felony charges involved. But of course, the media is above the law. As for the newspaper publishing such information; where did they get it? Doesn’t that break privacy laws?

It seems, as always with the left, that they truly believe that the ends justify the means, no matter how illegal or immoral.

2-17 Air Cav

@19 and 20. A pair of underwear is missing its skid mark.

Ex-PH2

@17 – Yes, it is Gannett: White Plains newspaper The Journal- News, a Gannett publication, has published the full name and address of every licensed pistol permit holder in three New York counties.

This is the link to the paper’s publication of those maps:

http://www.lohud.com/interactive/article/20121223/NEWS01/121221011/Map-Where-gun-permits-your-neighborhood-?nclick_check=1

I believe – TSO could chime in on this — that if you do something which puts other people at risk, you are liable for anything that happens to them. In this case, publishing their names and addresses on that map puts those people and their families at risk.

Hondo

Dunno about that, Ex-PH2. The newspaper asserts that this info (permit holder name and address) is public record information they obtained under (presumably) a NY state FOIA request. If that’s true, that may well make any lawsuit against the newspaper difficult if not impossible.

As I understand it, it’s very difficult to sue based on publication of truthful information that’s legally a matter of public record. But I’m not a lawyer, and would be interested in the opinion of any/all of the lawyers who regularly read TAH on this issue.

Hondo

Regarding Gregory: anyone know if possession of a high-capacity magazine in DC is a felony, or simply a misdemeanor?

It would be delicious irony if Gregory were to end up a convicted felon for breaking DC’s rather Draconian gun control laws while pushing for more Federal gun control laws, wouldn’t it? (smile)

J.R.

Jonn, read this about magazines. I backordered some.

I saw it on Twitter that Gannett is the parent company of the Army Times. Is that accurate?

It appears the author of the article giving out the addresses of gun owners is one Dwight R. Worley, of NYC area.

J.R.

I’ve been stockpiling mags for a long time, since the 08 election. After I came home from covering hurricane Sandy and saw what happened and the governments gross incompetence, I immediately bought a gun safe, a generator, and started buying up more ammo and mags. A 10 pack of 30 round Magpul mags with the dust cap and viewing window can be backordered for like 170 bucks from Brownells.

Old Trooper

Back to guns and the media; I just had a conversation with my aunt, who I called to wish merry Christmas. As usual, her leftist tendencies got the better of her and she started in about the shooting and guns. She stated matter of fact that the nutbar had an automatic weapon. I told her “no he didn’t”, and I was informed that the media says it was and I was wrong. She then explained that the 30 round magazine made it so. I told her “no it didn’t and that they were wrong”. She stated that everywhere she watched it, in the media, that they said it was an automatic and they would know more than me. I informed her that they were wrong and I knew more than her and the media on the subject. Well, it devolved from there and I was given a lecture on the 2nd Amendment and what it means (this from a woman that grew up in Germany during and after WWII). She seems to think that the 2nd Amendment only covers militias, as so many leftists claim. I told her it says so much more, to which she told me to go and read the whole thing. I told her that I have read it and the Federalist Papers concerning it. We never got anywhere, because she is a stubborn German, as am I, and we kept going around in circles about it.

When most of the populace gets their opinions from the media; shouldn’t they be regulated, by law, to tell the truth? I don’t think it will limit anyone’s free speech if such a requirement were put in place, it would just require them to tell the truth, that’s all. Maybe they should have to have a censor board review everything they want to put out to the general public, before they can air it? Words can be more dangerous than any 30 round magazine loaded into a fully automatic assault rifle, after all.

2-17 Air Cav

Don’t you guys know the exceptions to the law at issue?

(6)”Except as set forth in subsection (7) of this section, the possession of[…] shall be prohibited.”

“(7) An employee who is a registered Democrat or who, if not a registered Democrat, publicly espouses a progressive or liberal position in possessing an item identified in subsection (6) of this section, shall be immune from prosecution for possessing the item.”

Gallagher Fan

What are you bitching about PH2? Shouldn’t that article make those people less likely to ever be targeted by evil-doers?

NHSparky

Well, GF-Y, since you seem to be so unconcerned with the right to privacy of LEGAL permit and gun owners, yet the ACLU and other assorted groups fought tooth and nail against such things as sex offender notifications, etc:

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/18/us/lawsuit-filed-to-contest-california-sex-offender-law.html?_r=0

http://www.aclu.org/prisoners-rights/judge-upholds-sex-offender-residency-law-aclu-appeal

And this one is my personal favorite:

https://acluva.org/2350/sex-offender-and-crimes-against-minors-registry-registration-civil-commitment-and-mandatory-minimums-penalties/

Now I’ll throw you another “what if” scenario–a woman has a restraining order against an estranged spouse or boyfriend (or girlfriend, if you prefer.) This person also has a permit to carry based on the threat presented. Now this person’s home address is PUBLICLY POSTED, contrary to any wishes they may have to remain private due to safety concerns.

Now do you fucking get it, you dense little POS? Thus endeth the sermon, thus endeth the lesson. Poof–begone.

Oh, and Merry Christmas, asshole.

ROS

Merry Christmas to you, too, GF. Now, go GF.
