Funeral for SSgt. Carl M. Shaffer (World War II)
During February 2019, DPAA announced that it had accounted for SSgt. Carl M. Shaffer, US Army Air Forces. (SSgt. Shaffer was accounted for by DPAA on 27 December 2018, but his name was apparently “slipstreamed” onto DPAA’s Recently Accounted For listing on 25 February 2019.) SSgt. Shaffer was lost on Tarawa on 21 January 1944.
SSgt. Shaffer will be buried later this week – on Saturday, 25 May 2019, in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. Regrettably, DPAA does not seem to have posted the specific location for his funeral or interment.
If any TAH readers have the precise location for either SSgt. Shaffer’s funeral or interment, please post it in comments below. And if any readers are in that area and have the time, here’s an opportunity to give someone lost during World War II a proper final send-off.

Radio Operator SSG Carl Melvin Schaffer will be buried in the Highland Memorial Park Cemetery in Pottstown on Saturday, May 25th 2019 at 11:00 AM.
Rest In Peace now in your home soil, Soldier.
Welcome Home, again, SSG Shaffer. Here’s to hoping for a good turnout for your final flight. From news reports Hondo, it appears that the local media do a fair job in publicizing these events. At least here in GA. The one awhile back in Columbus (Ft. Benning) and another on the FIRST weekend in May just past Dublin, were well attended by Veterans, Active Duty, VSOs, and the general public.
Thank you for keeping us updated. This will get one of the TAH Ninjas on finding more info for us.
