Report: Iranian general fatally shoots himself by accident.
What a tragic loss, I know many of you join me in sorrow over this.
TEHRAN, Iran — The website of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard is reporting that a general who fought in Syria and Iraq has allegedly accidentally killed himself while cleaning a gun.
Gen. Ghodratollah Mansouri allegedly shot himself in the head by accident while cleaning his pistol, according to the Sunday report.
The report added that Mansouri was veteran of the 1980s Iran-Iraq war and a “defender of the shrine,” a reference to Iranians who fight against the extremist Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq.
Since 2014, Mansouri was a regional commander of the Guard’s ground forces in the northeastern city of Mashhad, some 900 kilometers east of the capital Tehran.
Hundreds of Iranian forces have been killed fighting IS in Syria and Iraq.
Hearts and minds people, its all about winning their hearts and minds.

Sure it is, the mistaken belief that the enemy of my enemy is a friend has been voiced for generations and has been wrong for those generations as quite often they prove to be just another enemy who shares a common enemy with you. That can be exploited sometimes like it was in WW2, but there was no scenario where the commie bastards in Russia were actually true allies. They were content to be the Nazi’s allies initially and only became our allies when their deal with the devil went to hell.
Iran is no longer a friend and is unlikely to ever be a friend in our lifetimes. That they need to fight IS to keep their land secure isn’t our problem, it might benefit our goals in the ME but it doesn’t make Iran a friend, nor does it make the loss of a single general any sort of tragedy.
One might argue that this man’s loss means more Iranian soldiers will get killed while killing members of IS that’s a good thing for the US as well as both Iran and IS lose strength in a war of attrition. Let your enemies bleed each other dry, then slaughter them both. The Romans were great at implementing that strategy for many a century before they got soft.

Lars, knowing you were never in the service as keeps becoming apparent. First off as far as Generals are concerned, in the recent past wars, with the exception of a few, high ranking generals are very seldom at the front actually taking part in the heat of a battle so I doubt if this General had ever actually fought in this on going war, more than likely he was doing like a lot of the rest of the able bodied men there are doing as in hiding in among the women. During VN a lot of the ARVN were trained by the Marines and Army and after getting fully educated many went AWOL and either joined the Viet Cong or the NVA to fight against the US and ARVN forces. So why should this Esteemed (in your mind) General be any different as to his loyalty, it is not unusual for some one in a high ranking position to give secrets to the enemy. If you do not believe me ask that worthless bitch in private as to Benghazi and her betrayal of our troops, come to think of it that must have destroyed all her records and e-mails.

The “accidently shot self while cleaning service weapon” is an old Police term of art.
As it is accidental, but foreseeable, while performing a required job task, it is definitively “line of duty”.
= The widow and kids gets any insurance, pension, etc.
= The decedant can be buried in consecrated ground.
= Any messy rumors can be squashed as irrelevant and “speaking ill of the dead”. Etc.
Seems to work in other professions, religions, and nations.
It also covers non-accidental shootings bu thehand of another, again with minimal fuss. But the non-suicide version is far, far, more common.
