Weekend Open Thread
Busting humps to get ready for a long (2-week-plus) road trip. So today’s WOT article consists of a photo, a comment – and a hint.
Here’s the photo:

The comment: the bright areas in the exhaust are called shock diamonds. They’re standing wave patterns that appear in supersonic exhaust plumes.
The hint: the photo is the hint.
Enjoy the WOT, everyone – and the weekend. And check back again next week. (smile)

First,
Sup Freaks
Congratulations ChipNASA.
The world of TAH is yours yet again as we pay homage to the great WOT First banner of heroes !!!
18’th or so for me…
Congrats Chip! Sorry I missed out, have been taking care of the wife and picking the grandson from school! May you all have a wonderful Veterans Day! My company actually gives us the day off!! I hope you all enjoy the weekend! Take care all!!
Thanks guys and WW prayers for the Mrs. and you and Fuck your shitty brother! YAY!
*knocks* “HELLO!!! IS this thing on?!?!?!?”
My favorite, except the A-10.
HELLO HABU!!
Kadena AB Okinawa Japan, 1984-1986
I’ll see your Kadena and raise you:
BITTE EIN BIT!!

Nauben Bit…Morgen Sh*t
Sembach AB 86-88
Here’s another:

I was there when we smoked Tripoli.
Da Nang AB 1970
God bless the ECW-121 casualties
I lived on Kadena when I worked at Torii Station.
Okinawa was a nice place to spend a few years.
Firstish, I demand a recount!
Earlyish, early in the day too! 5th?
4th. Just bought a Nikon rangefinder for $113 delievered… whoo hoo!
I carried a Pentax all over Alaska while I was stationed there in the 70’s.
It’s the only one that worked at forty below…
Nikon, Canon, even Leica didn’t work.
I love my Pentax !!!
Not even top five this week.
Although does Chip taking the top three spots count as one or as three? Cause I would posit my rightful place is fourth.
Who do I talk to to steal an election around here? All the lawyers I know that are in that business have gone to Florida and/or Arizona.
Just one. Just because I was playing with myself, doesn’t take away your 4th.
(Well, no one ELSE was here and *I* was bored. Waiting for Ex-PH2 to come in and rap my knuckles with a ruler.)
Top Ten!!!! The week of the midterm elections is very difficult for Hack Stone. It was shortly after the 2014 midterm elections that Elaine Ricci disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Stay strong, Elaine, we will bring you home.
My apologies, everyone. This was supposed to run at the normal time (1300 EST, give or take a few min). Unfortunately, the server doesn’t seem to have been reset to standard time from DST yet.
Not sure how that is done. I’ll bring it to DH’s and Mark’s attention.
“Not sure how that is done”
Did you try jiggling the handle?
Did you try turning it off and on???
Did you try fine tuning it with a hammer and chisel or try using a set of irons.
In the Signal Corps, we call that “recycling the power”. It briefs better.
The “Technician’s Reboot”. I know it well!
Did you think about changing from Summer cables and USB ports to Winter? I know it’s early but try that. See if it works.
How about a higher weight oil?
Have you fed the gerbil running on the wheel that drives the main belt?
The server probably has a GMT adjustment and rule that needs followed.
If it’s a rule of thumb there should be a thumbwheel on the underside.
I’m all thumbs now. Is it clock wise or clock stupid? Real late to the party, had to re-provision. The temp may actually drop below 50 F tonight. Two official Veterans Day Services tomorrow, another Sunday AM, then at 11:11 I have staked out a lonely little church cemetery with a WBTS, SP/AM, WWI, WWII, Korea, VN Vets to pay honors to. That’s a just small us detail.
Top Ten!! Happy weekend everyone, and take care of each other, especially on Monday.
Not first!
Good heavens! The WOT was early this week! Sigh … story of my life, I suppose. Since I can’t be first, or even in the top ten, let’s just do this week’s trivia column. Have fun with it! DID YOU KNOW…? Did a Major League pitcher “call” his first home run six years before he hit it? By Commissioner Wretched Someone asked me once how I go about writing this weekly column of trivial stuff. That was, by far, an easier question to answer than the one I expected, which was why I write it. I still haven’t figured that one out. But the how is simple. I place my fingers on the computer keyboard above the proper letters, press as needed, and when I’m done, I click “save” and that’s it. (I know I’m being pedantic. It’s my column. Sue me.) Seriously, the “how” which the questioner actually meant is just as easy to answer. I scour many, many sources for these trivial nuggets, do a bit of research on the ones I select (sometimes I have to do more than just a bit of research), and when I’m satisfied that the item is right, I add it into the mix. Following that, I do the stuff I referenced in the smart-Aleck answer above. Then I pour it into a casserole dish and bake it at 350°F for 30 minutes, and serve. So here’s this week’s serving of trivia, piping hot and ready for you to enjoy. An e-mail sent to me at didyouknowcolumn@gmail.com always gets a reply, so write if you get work. Dig in, friends! Trivia awaits! Did you know … … there are only two days in the entire year when there are no major-league sports of any kind scheduled anywhere in the United States? Those two days are the day before, and the day after, the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. (And they still say the All-Star Game doesn’t get enough attention!) … if you add up the number of letters in the names of all playing cards (ace, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight,… Read more »
Broccoli is good, as long as it is brined before cooking, but it’s better raw. But give up bacon and eggs???? Blasphemy!!!!
I get called a Word Nazi because I’m a bit pedantic…I just tell folks that words mean stuff!
TOP 20 this week. Was doing occupational theray at 1100 cst, while captive in local hospital due to bad lower back.
Fastball fastball fastball, then a wicked change up. Messing w/ peeps on the WOT – well not Chip anyways.
Using my talents to afford taxes (it’s called work, y’all should try it. Kidding!)
Have a GREAT weekend y’all!!!
Present! Another day of waiting out the McSally/Sinema circus and waiting for the hordes to hit the border. Happy Friday!
Not FIRST, but top 20! I will take it.
And…I couldn’t even do that. Shoot.
Anyway, down in Southeast Texas helping out the in-laws.
Well, phooey on ALL of you! I just found a box of ballots in the downstairs closet, and they ALL say that I won! It must be true. How DARE any of you question the results I say it says. Why should the simple fact that I never filed for candidacy have any impact? I said it, therefore it must be true. And I want you to record my age as 39 because that is how I relate. Got a problem with any of that? Who cares?? It is because I said so. Who are you to question it?
Well, sure, I’m pretty blasted conservative. Whaddayamean, if only I called myself lefty I could be sworn in as the grand poohbah of ballotry without objection from anyone who matters?
I PROTEST! I’d gather up a crowd, but all my friends are at work…
Send me a ballot. I’ll vote for you!
So, I just watched “Lone Survivor” on TV for about the 80’th time.
I am always pleased with the manner that Mark Wahlberg plays people that deserve nothing but the greatest respect.
He always studies the people before he plays them and then makes sure that they have the best light shining on them when you watch his work.
To me, he is probably the best actor in Hollywood in this generation.
The final battle scene…
He does good in that flick. I watched the one about the oil rig explosion and liked that as well. Can’t bring myself to watch the one about the Boston Marathon bombing.
That said, I feel like every time there’s a national disaster now that Marky Mark is asking if there’s a white guy with a Boston accent involved and can he get the movie rights?
My son in law who works on offshore rigs says that movie was about as realistic as Die Hard.
Here’s a bit of open-thread information. Driving to the hardware store yesterday, I heard a Little Rock talk show host fielding calls from listeners about a new court ruling in Arkansas back in October that legalized Constitutional Carry. Show host, Doc Washburn, said the liberal Little Rock media were deliberately trying to suppress this information.
I’m thinking BS/talk-show hype but when I got home I immediately checked online and found the case. Sure enough, on October 17th, the Arkansas Court of Appeals made a ruling in a case that effectively eliminates the need for a permit to carry concealed:
https://www.usacarry.com/arkansas-permitless-carry/
With newly re-elected Republicans, Governor, Lt. Governor and Attorney General, we should be cautiously confident that the state will not move to appeal or contest this court ruling. There is however, still some confusing language in the Arkansas statutes regarding the transport of firearms in vehicles that clashes with this latest ruling which the Republican majority legislature needs to resolve.
Still in all, another win for the good guys.
Arkansas was just put on the short list for Mr. and Mrs. AW1Ed’s retirement lodgings.
When I went from the Army to the Air Force, I was serving at Little Rock AFB. At the time it was a highly preferred retirement choice. In those days, when within 2 years of retirement one could request PCS to their base of choice. (Certain restrictions always apply…smile) I do not remember if it applied to 20-year retirements or only those at 28. Maybe someone here will remember. Another hot spot was to PCS to Seymour Johnson AFB in NC.
You have said before that you served at Little Rock AFB, I wonder if you know my brother in law? He retired from there and stayed in that AO. Served in the same time frame.
Just stay away from Little Rock and Fayetteville if you want your conservative vote to count. Those are the two major liberal areas in the state. The Democrats also still control some of the eastern counties along the Mississippi but the majority of the state is Republican. The most scenic part of the state is the western half which is mostly mountains, lakes and forests.
Housing is very affordable if you, once again, stay away from Little Rock. Income tax and sales tax are higher than some other retirement states but the Republican government is trying to find a way to cut spending and get them down. Remember, until the last few years, old southern Democrats completely controlled this state but they have lost ground every election and Republicans now control all the key offices.
Out of curiosity I looked at what I could find for housing there. Affordable, you weren’t kidding. Around these parts $350k gets you a comfortable single family home with a half acre or less.
Lookie what I found:
https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/18649-Saddle-Shop-Ln-Springdale-AR-72764/126389655_zpid/?view=public
This house has a freaking spiral slide in the living room, a basketball court inside, and is on a lake.
Initiating conversation with the wife in 3, 2, 1…
Still waiting on Congressional election results in Maine.
The Republican won on Tuesday with the most votes.
The Democrat will find more votes for the do-over scheduled for next week.
First the ballots are counted by the towns and results reported to the State. Now the ballots are being transported to the state by specially selected honest couriers travelling hundreds of miles of backroads to retrieve the ballots and bring them to the State, unmolested.
Car trunks full of ballots that have already been counted but will now be counted again by the State after being driven around for awhile
out of sight.
Repub Gov Elect Kemp has declared hisself the winner here in the Peach State. Demon rat Abrams is saying they’ll keep counting and suing until either a recount or do over. As they say, vote early, vote often. We, too, expect a large box of just discovered ballots to show up tween now and Sunday evening.
For those in the frozen north looking for something to binge watch this weekend, this looks like it might be good.
I just read that a memorial is going up (or went up) at the Old North Church in Boston. The memorial, in the form of a wreath, honors both British and American lives lost in the Revolutionary War. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m thinking that this isn’t such a wonderful thing. In fact, I think it stinks.
My American of Irish descent blood says nope.
My Scotch/Irish descent blood says nope also. Lotsa Memorial Markers going that way lately tho. Joint services too, especially for WWI & II. I have no real problems with honoring Soldiers from both sides, but personally feel there should be some separation with the markers. When we do WBTS Memorials, we also honor both sides, Blue & Gray, with both uniforms and both sets of flags.
There is nothing left of early Boston that has not been wholly perverted.
Or made into condos.
Not entirely a bad idea. Just remove the British half of the wreath- done!
Pffftt. Not first.
Those of you who are placing Christmas lights/decorations in your yards, can you please avoid anything that has Red or Blue flashing lights together?
Every time I come around the corner, I think it’s the police and I have a panic attack.
I have to brake hard, toss my bourbon, fasten my seat belt, throw my phone on the floor, turn my radio down, and push my gun under the seat. All while trying to put my clothes back on.
It’s just too much drama, even for Christmas.
Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
Now THAT is funny!
I have a question though, bourbon while driving?
Civilized men drink gin whilst operating a motor carriage, Dear Sir.
First in the hearts and minds of my grandchildren.
Went to substitute today at the school that is willing to pay me. They had a fantastic Veteran’s Day program and I got to catch up with some old friends there. AB Son didn’t get to go – had to work. (Gotta feed his wife and children.)
Got on FB later to see postings of school programs in the two school districts in our county. With the other activities this weekend, a whole lotta love going out to our veterans this week.
You TAHellions have a fantastic weekend, y’hear? We just may dip down to near freezing here. That’ll make the deer hunters happy.
For those not up on the latest in the ‘Slamonazi war against the civilized world, a “soldier of Islam” (ISIS fan-boi) just struck in Melbourne, Australia. He tried to crash a pick-up full of propane tanks into a metro tram but missed, so he set the vehicle on fire and tried to hack and stab multiple bystanders (one dead) with a large knife. After attacking several police officers, finally one who was armed shot him. He’s dead, Jim.
Seems they always fuck up their original plan and end up stabbing people as a last resort. And he had to attack multiple officers until he found one that was armed!
Been watching Aussie TV shows for a couple of years. Their PoPo have become the Europussies of the Southern Hemisphere, just like their Limey cousins. Their legal system is a joke. If you meticulously plot and carry out a murder it seems like you will get a sentence of around fifteen years and get paroled in less than ten.
Point Mugu /Navy Base Ventura County is evacuated due to the Woolsey fire that is burning Malibu.
Navy has a shot at picking up a rare win today. The Middies play Tulsa who, like Navy, is having a bad season. Combined, the two teams have 4 wins. Ouch. Army plays 8-0 Colgate.
“Army plays 8-0 Colgate”
Next week.
When we change the clocks.
Yeah, I just saw that. Sucks. Dble error. Navy is not playing Tulsa until next week also. Navy is playing #12 UCF (8-0)–and soon to be 9-0 4th Quarter.
Funny thing. Both Army and Navy are in the 4th quarter and the difference between each and their opponents is 18. Of course, Army is up 18 and Navy is down 18, but, still, it’s 18.
I changed my clock today. I like to keep ahead of these things.
You, two? Changed the clocks this morning. Had a time figuring out how to change the car clock. Finally got to the right program. Long gone are the twisty knob and the push buttons.
You were probably kidding, A/C. I wasn’t.
(or “too”) Who said that proofreading prior to posting is much more effective?
Yes, I was kidding, in response to 16 Limabean’s post. Now, on to football.
Navy lo-lo-los-los-did not win. The Muddies did make a game of it, scoring 14 in the 4th. Army won its 8th game of the season.
16? Cripes. I’m full of errors today. 16 is 26’s little brother. I get them confused sometimes.
16L is a Sgt. York Air Defense Gun System Crewmember.
My younger brother is a bean counter.
John Giduck – the turd with a face!
https://thetruthaboutsocnetlies.wordpress.com/2014/08/23/giduck-pal-ltc-dave-grossman-falsely-claims-hes-a-pulitzer-prize-nominee/
…and his pal Dave Grossman who has falsely claimed that he ws nomintaed for a Pulitzer Prize.
https://thetruthaboutsocnetlies.wordpress.com/2014/09/20/questionable-church-security-speaker-carl-chinn-defends-john-giduck/
—and then there is “church facilities manager turned self proclaimed hero and active shooter consultant” Carl Chinn who the facts seem to indicate that he hid like a coward but claimed to be “right there”.
It’s like the three stooges of police trainers but living off your tax dollars and church donations
Went to a Grossman training seminar once. At lunch one of the guys I was with wondered about the colonel’s combat experience. I said, he hasn’t been in combat. How’d I know? Cause if he had, it’d have been the first thing out of his mouth. He’s a good self-promoter, that’s for sure.
Sad thing is how much money there is in that gig. Not only do they speak to a room full of people for $350-500 a head, but it’s sponsored. So there’s a bunch of vendors trying to sell you their wares. There’s also the obligatory, full-price book stand if you’d like to hear more from the speakers.
Grossman is a charlatan surrounded by frauds with influential people that clearly hare in the profits.
Given that we’ve been in combat for 18 years, there’s a fuckload of people that know FAR more about killing than Grossman ever will.
I think that Grossman’s most dangerou assignment was fighting papercuts while a professor at West Point.
Plus the over-the-top lie about being Pultzer Prize nminated says a lot about Grossman’s lack of integrity. Of course, Grossman continues to defend Giduck to this day – much like that other embellishing jackass that goes by the pen name, Brad Thor.
I have interest from a big time publisher that will expose the fraud and big dollars behind training training law enforcement. Grossman and Giduck will be central figures in the work.
Cori LeCinda Pierce – the turd who defrauds with a dog!
“They will eventually get it out of their systems”
She doesn’t know us very well.
Maine just launched another one of those invisible Destroyers.
The slanted sides are so cannonballs and stuff just deflect away.

My dog just dropped a huge steaming pile of Phil Monkress.
Adam Appel whom a reasonable person might consider the new AirBnB Fraud King of Pahoa Hawaii and Stolen Valor Queen of Anchorage Alaska, has a new page
https://adamappelairbnb.blogspot.com/2018/11/airbnb-in-pahoa-hawaii-adam-appel-beware.html
‘Nuff said.
If you have friends that AirBnB in Pahoa Hawaii, please send them this link so that they can make an informed decision about Adam Appel as their AirBnB host.
They’ll want this link. They need this link.

Posted this last night but the typo in my email prevented it from showing up.
Point Mugu / Navy Base Ventura County was evacuated and is threatened by the fire.
Just thought some of you might want to know if you have a connection to the base.
I’m not getting any “thank you for your service” emails this morning. Should I expect them today (veterans day) or tomorrow (veterans day)?
Two straight days of it is a bit much.
And what about Denny’s discount?
Today or tomorrow. Don’t want to miss that.
Veterans Day is canceled this year for lack of interest. Besides, it’s nothing special, just the 100th anniversary of a world war’s end to hostilities.
Local news was full of places for free Veterans Meals this morning. Lady friend asked me if I wanted to get out and go get some. Coulda made a day out of it; Breakfast, Lunches, and Supper. When I shook my head no, she inquired why not?, it’s a nice day, and folks can thank you for your service. ‘Splained to her that (a) I didn’t want to fight hordes of posers and freeloaders, (b) planning on a private service for the boys in the little church yard off the dirt road, (c) I got money. She wants to go with me. See y’all later, gotta go.
“I got money. She wants to go with me”
you silver tongued devil.
The way to a woman’s heart is thru your bank account. (grin). The main bulge they want to see is the one in your wallet.
Of all the emails, flyers, and ads announcing discounts/sales commemorating Veterans Day received this week via assorted means, only one had anything to do with honoring actual veterans. That one announced that for a time period, a percentage of all sales would go to WWP, or couple of other worthy causes, and the customer got to pick which.
Weird. So much of what goes on to “celebrate” veterans involves veterans doing stuff while everybody else stands around watching them. What? Are we caged animals on display??
Back in the late 60s early 70s, some folk thought we were animals that should be caged. Especially some Personnel Managers/Human Resources people. Can’t tell you how many times I was asked “What drugs are you addicted to?” or “How many babies do you think you killed?” Saddest part of that is I never was in country, they never looked at the actual service record. Once they saw Veteran, that was it. For awhile, I quit putting it in applications at all. Made like I had been in school. (Had been using GI Bill)
