FTC, states, target bogus veterans’ charities in new crackdown: ‘It’s war profiteering’

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette said that as part of the FTC’s “Operation Donate with Honor” he was investigating Foundation for American Veterans for deceptive solicitations and for “dubious withdrawals” by the group’s treasurer. (Google Archive)
Generous Americans give more than $2.5 billion a year to some 40,000 charities with missions designed to help veterans.
Lately, however, this crowded field has been inundated by fraud, according to the Federal Trade Commission.
Welcome to the party…finally. The use and abuse of veteran related charities has been going on for far too long. Motorcycle clubs and even VFW posts have been busted for this asshattery.
The FTC launched Operation Donate with Honor in July to spotlight the problem of fraudulent and deceptive fundraising on behalf of military and veterans’ causes.
“It’s war profiteering,” Joshua Starks, commander of the 300,000-strong Oklahoma Veterans of Foreign Wars told Fox News. “They’re stealing from people who raised their hand and took an oath to serve our country and then went overseas to protect the rights of all of us–including the people who are stealing from them.”
As part of Operation Donate with Honor, the FTC distributed a list of 102 law enforcement actions 34 states have lodged against bogus veterans’ charities. Some are recent. Others are newly filed. The FTC is a partner in two of the new cases.

Well, it is a start.
Nothing wrong with going after scumbag scammers, I wish them success.
How about they go after my brother for him scamming the Purple Heart chapter that he was running out of 10K to build a trout pond on his property? I wonder how many vets that have actually got to fish in his trout pond?? The VA has still done nothing about his phony PTSD 100% disability check for $3200 bucks he gets every month?? They don’t do shit to stop all of the fraud even when I give them all the evidence all wrapped up in a nice package???
They’ll get him someday, Wilted Willy. You will eventually get the ear of the right person who will break it off in his ass.
The FTC has flipped on the light and the cockroaches are running for the baseboards.
About time.
Great! Now here’s hoping the Dems don’t win back the house and obstruct all these efforts to root out fraud. Because no matter how noble the cause, if Trump’s admin is doing it, it’s pure evil Nazism.
I don’t remember all these veteran charities existing back in my day.
That’s because we were all drug addicted, baby killing, rapist’ invading the home of the peace loving peoples of SEA, violating the wishes of top female whorish wanna be movieetts ‘and Berserkley College Kid stank ass hippies. You should have burned your draft card, your old ladies bra and beat feet to Canook Land. Jimmuh woulda pardoned you.
I wonder a lot about ‘stuff’. I wonder how those who beat feet to Canada feel about their cowardice these days? Call it what you will; I call it cowardice. Oh, a handful were truly objectors on religious grounds; most were just cowardly hippies. My opinion. Your views may differ. I don’t care. Anyway, I wonder how they feel about that? Do they brag of their ‘exploits’ to their children? Do they brag about how they stuck it to da man? Do they give speeches at VFW conventions? Or, as I believe, they don’t mention it at all? That would be my guess.
Chief…..well put, worthy of honest conversation among all of us. Since returning from RVN in 1969 I have yet to hear anyone discuss the subject. Likely they all live with a guilty conscience, which shows itself when two or more are discussing hiding in Canada. People can make themselves heard loudly when opposing parties disagree on whether we won in the Nam or not. But justifying or being happy knowing they ran like little girls to Canada to avoid fighting for their own country and becoming a man……I can just imagine the response they would get from any of us on TAH if the subject came up and they even considered bragging or not. Win, lose or draw in the Nam, at least most everyone would get seriously pissed off if anyone tried to justify their cowardice. We did what we thought was right at the time, and that was to serve our country.
Funny how you never see a news story discussing the act with any of those who ran North. Can’t you just imagine Manning pissing in his panties when receiving notice of call up at his homo HQ?
yep to all
Maybe if we could find a true investigative journalist, that would make a very interesting conversation/article. I’d venture to say, if there were to be that type article, it would be geared towards the chicken shit asshole…err religious objector standing up for bravely objecting to an illegal, unjust war. I’ve only met 1 feet beater and knew of another. The one I met was definitely a “I was smart enough to leave the States” type, the other was disowned by his father and stayed up there. Big surprise, he was a college professor at some Toronto LA School. Have met several NG types that joined NG to ensure NO service in SEA. One of those in particular is running off at the mouth on the book of the face now a days that he was either, huey gunner, sniper, ‘toon SSG, or M60/Ma Duece Operator. To my knowledge, this one never left the CONUS. Working on getting enough dirt on him to send for a FOIA. Do know that the local VVA is eat up with that type. I turned down an invite to join VVA cause I never was boots on the ground in country. Being on an aircraft that was diverted from SEA to the ETO, in my book, doesn’t make me a Viet of the Nam Vet. Don’t matter if I volunteered to go, trained to go, and got on a plane to go, didn’t make it. They may technically, legally classify me that way, but I don’t.
Have only met a couple who claimed it, and I wondered at the time if they were posers. They were enthusiastic about how honorable they were, yada, yada. And were with the other aging hippies burning flags etc.
BTW, while on the subject, please go out of your way to stop at a State of Florida rest stop entering or leaving Florida Be sure to look for the single table assholes representing “Veterans In Need Foundation” I mentioned last week. Pure CON ARTISTS in every bit of their story. Remember to Google a story written to expose them as they did…The office for their CON ARTIST Club is located in Pompano Beach, Florida. They were featured in a story on television carried by A B C news out of New York. For $25 per day per one table per rest stop the State of Florida is happy to turn a blind eye to their bullshit. And some wonder why so many phony vets living in Florida are so often in the news.

I wonder if the willingness to contribute to these charities is driven by feelings of guilt by those who didn’t have the guts to serve.
Akpual….good point. Never have given that much interest in your point of view, until NOW. It always makes me wonder how few actually wore the uniform during RVN or any other period of time. Doesn’t make any difference why they never served, but if you go to church you can easily see how few stand on Veteran’s Day or Memorial Day. Probably five or six years ago we quit going on those two days in particular. Some of those few walked around a larger church we once attended, high fiving others and slapping them on the back. Their fullashit grins often made me wonder how many were posers. Nonetheless, I was still always amazed at how few actually served at any time in their life. On average, I’d guess less than 15% of the male members of any church we have attended actually stood up. Always made me wonder, where in the world did all those fighting in RVN come from? Your point makes sense. If guilt is the motivating factor in donating to any questionable Veteran’s charity, I hope it clears their mind so they can finally think, “Well, I’ve done my thing and made it right.” For those chumps…not even close! Not enough $ to justify you not participating
If my memory serves me right someone here posted a link to the percentages of those who served. I think it was exPh2. I dont recall it being even 15%.
Several times a year our Pastor asks attendees to stand as he calls out branch of service. My wife, Mrs. HMC Ret, AKA The Russian AKA Sp4 is the only female veteran in the congregation. Of the 150 or so, maybe a dozen men stand. No Marines. Mostly Navy … it’s a Navy town. Now these are men in the mostly 55-85 y/o range, yet fewer than a dozen are veterans. One is a partial poser. I know for an absolute fact he is a retired Navy E-6 yet he wears a CPO uniform. I know he’s an E-6 b/c he once showed me a document from his wallet (not an ID card). He sure dresses up pretty several times a year, though. Now, in such a military town, and given the ages of the attendees, I would have thought at least 20-25 percent would be vets. Nope. I don’t dress up … I’ve got nothing that fits except my cover and socks. Wife gave me a USN ball cap a few years ago and wants me to wear it. I’m thinking of getting her an Army ball cap.
Short answer to why- the hero business is lucrative.
May all these outfits and individuals rot in Hell. But not until after they’ve rotted a good, long time in the here and now.
If possible, I hate these bottom-dwelling, pond scum sucking, oxygen theiving, dingle berries on the infected anus of a mange ridden rabid capybara more than I hate the Cheeto-fingered basement denizon keyboard warriors whose only above ground excursions include decking themselves out in their flea-market purchased ribbon racks pinned to their orange-smeared t-shirts.
I hate them more than I hate the former residents of various and numerous law enforcement provided public accommodations who currently occupy various street corners begging change for their service in a war they were to young to remember, or only vaguely remember from the protest signs they once carried.
I hate them more than I hate bun-wearing beta males.
I hate them more than I hate the mere suggestion of starting a day without coffee.
I hate them.
I guess I’ve been in a real bad mood of late. But I feel much better now.
Awww c’mon Denise, take a deep breath and tell us how you REALLY feel!
Well, yeah – what SHE said…
People suck. If you just remember that, you will never be disappointed in what they do or fail to do and you will sometimes be happily surprised.
