Weekend Open Thread
Most TAH readers know about the May Day 1960 U-2 incident involving Gary Powers. But I’d guess not as many know about a U-2 incident that almost happened roughly 3 1/2 years earlier. It would have been fatal, caused the loss of a U-2, and would have been even more embarrassing to the USA than Powers being shot down had things gone very slightly differently.
During overflights of the Soviet Union, U-2 pilots for those flights were offered the option of carrying a suicide kit on each mission. (Carrying the kit at all, along with its use if captured, were at the pilot’s option.) By the time Powers’ U-2 was shot down, this kit used a concealed needle and a purified shellfish toxin (saxitoxin).
However, US overflights of the Soviet Union started in 1956 – nearly 4 years prior to Powers being shot down on May Day 1960. During the earlier years of the program the suicide kit consisted of what was referred to as an “L-pill”. This was a small glass capsule filled with a potassium cyanide solution. Biting down on the pill broke the glass; death due to cyanide poisoning would occur quite shortly afterwards.
That earlier L-pill reportedly very nearly led to another, earlier U-2 incident over the Soviet Union.
. . .
Only one Cold War U-2 flight ever overflew Moscow. That flight occurred on 10 July 1956; it was piloted by Carmine Vito. It wasn’t his only overflight of the Soviet Union.
Though U-2 pilots were warned that opening their pressure suit’s faceplate while at high altitude was dangerous, many did so anyway – generally in order to eat something small or get a piece of chewing gum during a mission. Vito was one of those who did.
Vito was reportedly fond of eating lemon drops during U-2 missions. Seems his throat got dry while at altitude, particularly during Soviet overflights. (Ya think!? Hell, during an overflight mission my butt cheeks would have been clenched tight enough to suck half the damn seat cushion up my . . . well, let’s just say I’d have been damned nervous too. [smile]) He found that lemon drops helped, so Vito always put a supply in one of his flight suit pockets.
This turned out to be a problem on 10 December 1956. On that date, Vito made another overflight of the Soviet Union. And the following reportedly happened (emphasis added):
About midway through the mission Vito opened his faceplate and popped into his mouth what he thought was another lemon drop. Closing the faceplate, he began sucking on the object and thought it strange that it had no flavor and was much smoother than the previous lemon drops. Although tempted to bite down, he decided instead to reopen his faceplate and see what it was. Spitting the object into his hand, he saw that he had been sucking on the L-pill with its lethal contents of potassium cyanide. Just a thin layer of glass had stood between him and near-instant death. Somewhat shaken, Vito successfully continued the mission and returned safely to base.
Source: Norman Polman, Spyplane: The U-2 History Declassified, MBI Publishing, 2001, p. 103.
Yep, you read that correctly. Vito had popped his L-pill into his mouth instead of a lemon drop. Only the fact that Vito refrained from biting down on the L-pill prevented his death – and the U-2 from crashing, very likely over Soviet territory.
You see, Vito had requested the suicide kit for that mission. And one of the USAF techs involved in mission prep had unknowingly put the L-pill Vito had requested into the same pocket that Vito used for his lemon drops.
The account is silent regarding whether or not Vito needed new skivvies after the mission. (I certainly would have.) But those early U-2 pilots were masters at “maintaining an even strain” – so maybe not.
On flights afterwards, the L-pill was reportedly boxed to prevent such a mix-up. And concerns about what might happen if one broke in the cockpit during a mission (with likely fatal results to the pilot) later led to the replacement of the L-pill with the saxitoxin-laced needle carried by Powers on his ill-fated final U-2 flight.
. . .
The accuracy of the above account involving lemon drops, an L-pill, and Vito has been disputed. Purportedly Vito himself denied it – but multiple other accounts say it indeed happened, with at least one account indicating Vito was heard after the mission relating the tale to other U-2 pilots.
Col. Carmine Vito, USAF (Ret), died in Austin, TX, on 27 August 2003. He’s thus no longer around to ask about the story’s accuracy.
Personally, I believe the incident happened – if not to Vito, then to another U-2 pilot. One thing I’ve learned during my lifetime is that (to paraphrase the late Arthur C. Clarke) not only is reality stranger than fiction – it’s sometimes also stranger than you can possibly imagine.
OK, enough Cold War history. Enjoy this week’s WOT – and have a great 3-day weekend.

First!
Congrats, Willy!! Enjoy the throne!
Thanks CW, I hope you have a great weekend!
Congrats, WW.
Hope your coming week is all First-rate good news from doctors, bankers, and insurance agents.
Eat it Dickweeds, I just wanted to see if I could still do it!
Congrats Willy. That’s your fourth or fifth award so maybe there is some sort of cluster to denote it. V device maybe?
Yes, 26L, maybe I should get some kind of phony pony device with “Clusters” like my big pos brother? How about a screaming chicken sitting on a pile of shit?? Then I could out do my dear brother?? I leave it up to my breathren here??
Nah – the “MF” device with appropriate numeral.
Now, don’t go getting offended. That stands for “Multiple First” device; the numeral indicates how many. (smile)
Thanks Hondo, glad I got something???
Isn’t it Claw that keeps the coveted book of Firsts! Maybe he can tell me how many times I have been first?? Iquiring minds want to know??
Willy, since I assumed the duty of recording the coveted WOT Firsts (from 2/17 Air Cav) on 09 Jun 17, there have been eight (8) instances where you were First. Those dates were:
22 Sep 17
06 Oct 17
20 Oct 17
27 Oct 17
17 Nov 17
24 Nov 17
01 Dec 17 (Your official Three-fer date)
31 Aug 18
There was an instance back on 20 Apr 18 when both you and Roh-Dog logged in at the same posted minute, but Roh-Dog got the Gold Star entry.
That’s the report. Here’s the authentication:
“So let it be written, so let it be done.”
So Claw, has anyone beat me at 8 WOT Firsts!?? I am hoping I can be first at something?? Thank you all!!
Nope, nobody else has logged eight Firsts yet. Your closest competition is:
ChipNASA – Seven Firsts
CommisionerWretched – Six Firsts
I thought it meant “Me First”
I propose there be a golden “DW” device followed by a numeral designating the number of times one has taken first on the WOT.
Second!
And a Happy Labor Day weekend to all my fellow Dickweeds at TAH!
And you won’t find a scruftier bunch of dickweeds anywhere. May you all enjoy this Labor Day weekend. Stay safe, drive careful, don’t drink…too much, and enjoy the unofficial end of summer holiday.
And congrats Willy.
Top 10!!!
#5!
Actually, looks like #3!
I know a lot of you are just hanging around waiting for me to post this … so here is this week’s column. Enjoy your Labor Day weekend, friends! DID YOU KNOW…? What is the world’s deadliest animal? By Commissioner Wretched When it’s snack time, what do you enjoy? (Why does that sound like one of the silly questions people ask on Facebook?) I am an equal-opportunity snacker, which you’d realize if you were to ever meet me. There are very, very few things I won’t enjoy at snack time. And the size of my shirt and trousers will attest to that, believe me. But one thing I enjoy for a snack … and you enjoy it too, or you wouldn’t be here … is trivia. I get a great deal of pleasure out of finding these little nuggets of semi-wisdom for you, presenting them to you in this little tome, and even adding my two cents’ worth at the end of most. It’s a lot of fun (and it helps that I get paid for doing it, too). It’s obvious that you like the occasional trivia snack too. I can tell by the e-mails I receive. Speaking of e-mails, if you want, you can send me one at didyouknowcolumn@gmail.com. I guarantee a reply. Hey, the old clock on the wall says … it’s snack time! Let’s have some trivia! Did you know … … toothpicks cause injuries to more than 9,000 people in the United States every year? In fact, author Sherwood Anderson (1876-1941) died after he swallowed a toothpick that had been stuck in an olive in his martini. The toothpick damaged his internal organs, leading to infection and peritonitis, which killed him. (So always take your martinis shaken, not stirred … and hold the olives!) … Lassie, the beloved female collie featured in several television series, was actually played by a male collie? Several male collies, to be precise; the one to hold the role the longest was named Pal. (There’s a joke about equality I could do right here, but I think I’ll just let it… Read more »
Fascinating!
Fixed that for you.
Speaking of Spanish words, “mosquito” means “small fly”, mosca is fly, and “ito” denotes “small” (or something similar).
As for how much longer multi celled life has on earth, another factor to consider is when the sun starts to swell. I’ve read some studies/articles that put that at a billion years out, or shorter than that.
Thanks CW, always a bright spot and learning tool.. Now I know why I felt “handcuffed” on three different occasions. And no, they weren’t the playful fuzzy kind.

Top ten and Honorary First yet again.

Lucky 13th!
Wow, only 6th. Alrighty then. Lots of chatter boxes up yonder….
Mine Update.
For those who were betting on a training mine, congrats.
Navy Times Link
The ammo dump is picky when you don’t return used 7.62 brass.
And no one can leave the range until all the C-4 has been blown up. My sergeant and I didn’t know that when we drove the C-4 and the detonators (in separate vehicles, of course) to the flame range. We got stuck there with no lunch; generous comrades shared their MREs with us and we survived with no ill effects. 😉
Hey guys, where’s that training mine you left with?
Uh, we lost it. Pretty sure it sunk.
Well, as long as it doesn’t float into Puget Sound, we should be good.
“Well, as long as it doesn’t float into Puget Sound, we should be good.”
…and be a hazard to navigation, not to mention scaring the crap out of just about every one in the vicinity..
As of August 31, 2018, Dennis Howard Chevalier, a.k.a. Denny H Chevalier, phony Gulf War veteran, phony veteran, phony C-130 compass call pilot, phony SWAT veteran, phony retired USAF Lieutenant Colonel… That Dennis Howard Chevalier… Still was arrested on February 27, 2018, for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
He pointed a gun at his ex-wife and son, waved a loaded weapon around and pretended to shoot things, threatened an ex-fiancé with putting a round into her head, and then his arrest for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
One of these days, he’s going to point his gun at someone, like he has done before… And BHANG! They need to take this guy’s weapons away before he shoots someone.
Here is one link to one the details:

Just google “Dennis Chevalier arrested” to get additional details.
In other news, researchers have good news for red meat and cheese consumption. Bad news for Chevy though, he had more than the recommended dairy requirement:

Is he still incarcerated? Even if he did make bail I’m sure that the Law would forbid him from possessing firearms or ammunition because of what he’s charged with.
If they arrested him and charged him, they should’ve confiscated all fire arms from him and gave him a receipt until the resolution of the trial.
Same thing happens if you’re having a loud argument with your spouse and the police show up because of it too often. Cops show up because of a domestic? All your guns are belong to us!
He posted a photo on his Facebook back in March.
So eating properly like we were taught in the 1940s and 1950s will have me outliving these self-righteous soyburger consumers by at least 10 years, maybe 20?
Fine by me! Where’s the beef??? I’ve told every broccoli cruncher I run into (and I love broccoli) that I’m going to outlive him/her/it. Pisses them off no end.
THERE IS A special place for all of God’s creatures right next to the potatoes and gravy!
Speaking of veggies,
Just FYI,
A friend of mine told me about these cool Asian green beans that I should plant in my garden. It’s super late in the season but I thought what the heck so I ordered some on Amazon they came in two days and so this last weekend I planted them. I was kidding with the kids that they’re magic beans but they must be because I only put them in on Saturday or Sunday and they sprouted in three/four days. They are called Chinese yard long beans because they are 2 to 3 feet long. 😱😳😮.
Check them out in this guy’s video. I hope to have some in the next few weeks if I’m lucky.
I got a pack of 40 seeds and only planted about 20 and my friend at work said if 5 or 6 come up, I’ll be in trouble.
BRING IT ZOMBIE GREEN BEANS!!
Had McCain been elevated to President of the Universe or something like that? Wondering how a Senator (that the left trashed awhile back) is getting such a lavish send off.
Because he and Trump didn’t get along.
Just like the media and democrats in Congress defended MS-13, just like they defended other criminals….because Trump talked poorly of them.
I’m waiting for Trump to say, “I hate that Hitler guy, what a dirtbag….” Just to see what the left will respond with on that one.
I’d love to see President Trump come out in favor of oxygen and against cannibalism, then we’d see liberals stop breathing and eat each other!
Don’t toy with us, API!!
That’s like teasing a porcupine.
Ain’t I a DICKWEED? 🤣😀😈
My guess is that McCain went so full throttle anti-Trump that it made him a Saint to the political left and DC Insider crowd, he even disinvited Sarah Palin to his funeral before he passed away!
Some of us have to subsidize the Empire!
Have a stupendous (or stupor-ous) weekend y’all!
‘Top Gun: Maverick’ release date delayed until 2020
Navy Times Link
Thankful for small mercies. Now I’ll have to wait another year to ignore this, this…comedy. The first one made me laugh out loud.
I still wouldn’t walk across the street to watch that Scientology nutball in a 30 second commercial! He is too short to even get in the military, much less be a fighter pilot?? I’m sure he would have to be in the “Don’t ask, Don’t tell” squadron? What a moroon!!
Ditto on that flying saucer-worshipping fart monkey!
From what I’ve read and listened to, he’s not a true believer, nor a true practitioner of Scientology.
Celebrities, A-listers, super rich, politicians, etc., don’t have to do the same things as the servant class. They all have “exemptions” to do whatever they want. (Especially Tom, the VP of scientology)
So why do it? Because they make a fuck-ton of money for being a part of the wacky club!
Looks like he is standing on the seat.
He is clearly sitting on a kid’s booster seat or a box.
Yes, the booster seat! He still has to use a child car seat when he drives!
Dammit AW1Ed!
I hate you.
What took you so long?
*grin*
They delayed it by a year so that they can shoot additional scenes of Maverick completing his mandatory LGBTQ Sensitivity, Records Management, and Cyber Challenge Training.
Happy Labor Day Weekend.
For those of us in the Mid-Atlantic AO, it’s 12 of 13 years in a row…
Present and accounted for.
Today I stopped being a “Senior” and have graduated to the esteemed “Elderly” class.
70 years old today!! (shamelessly self-promoting). 😉
When I look back at all of the idiotic things that I did (and I definitely abused that privilege) or some of the situations during my life that I was involved in (or thrust in), it seems miracles still happen.
Guess the good Lord has something planned cuz it appears he ain’t finished with me yet.
Excellent story Hondo. Definitely an “Oh Shit” moment when Vito removed the “lemon drop” from his face and realized what he was sucking on.
Have a great & safe three day weekend all of you TAH fellers and feller-ettes.
HB … here is something to add a little class to this dump…be well.
I wish she’d have stood up and the end and taken a bow.
I mean *really* Dave. She (we) earned it.
WoW Chip! I would love to wear her ass as a hat! That is a class player! She really should have given us a bow wow!!
TALENTED!!!!
Thanks, Skyjumper. Was wondering if anyone had actually read the article and was ever going to comment about it. (smile)
Congrats on making it to 70. Aging kinda sucks – but it still beats the alternative!
Happy birthday, Sky. I’m only 4.5 laps behind you. Glad to hear that I’m not officially “Elderly” yet.
Just remember, age is just a number……….in your case, a LARGE number.
“Age is the triumph of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, then it don’t matter.”
– Satchel Paige
70 is “elderly”? I. did. not. know. that. In just under 2 weeks I will have completed 78 laps around the sun, making me one of the oldest commenters here. And, I don’t know of another commenter here that was in the 101st Airborne Division, when it was on jump status, (prior to 1965). This elderly guy can run a mile at a time, tie his shoes while standing, and still remembers to wipe after sitting. “Elderly”? Really?
In 6 days, I will commence my 73 lap around the sun. In the meantime, everyone have a great holiday weekend.
Er Frankie, I was on jump status with the 101 in 1968. 1/101 (ABN) (SEP) in beautiful downtown Song Be and then Phu Bai after Tet.
But I know what you meant. Think the Separate status kept us on jump pay. They probably lost that when they rejoined the Div after Tet but by then I was in the 3/82nd (ABN) (SEP).
I will have completed 77 laps in 28 days. You got me by one.
j, after I got out in 4/64, I pretty much lost track of everything military, (I was up to date on anything Ron Rico 151 though), and didn’t learn of the “Air Mobile” transformation until perhaps 73 or so. In ’73 I went back to Ft. Campbell, (as a cross country trucker, passing through), to give my son a tour of the post. I went back in ’94 and worked on post as an equipment operator on a project building the campus that is now the 160th Nightstalkers home. Back again in ’09 for “Week of the Eagle” celebration.
Watch out that you don’t slip into geezerhood. As Garrison Keillor once said, “Mother nature gives up on you once you become a Geezer. And brother, I can attest to that all of natures laws quit working for you if you go geezer. And most work against you. You can’t get to sleep at night and you can’t stay awake in the daytime. Sneezing and coughing are not safe any more. Your own body attacks you. Not pretty.
Many happy returns of the day, Skyjumper!
Interesting U-2 facts. Area 51 (Groom Lake) airfield was created for the location of the U-2’s development and testing. The military/CIA created the cover story that Area 51 was a radar research facility, which was partly true. They were researching how the U-2 airframe would look on ground based radar; that same research continued on every subsequent aircraft tested there. The U-2’s and the A-12’s/SR-71’s were initially flown by Air Force pilots detailed to the CIA. My last flight instructor was an ex-SR71 pilot; he had great stories about how demanding that aircraft was to fly.
Update!
Eastern Germany Hit by Riots after Deadly Stabbing Spree
Chemnitz Migrant Murder Suspect Had Prior Convictions And Was Set for Deportation
Breitbart News Link
Why he was not deported after offense #1 is a mystery to me, and I’m sure the family of the victim as well.
Can’t possibly be true, AW1Ed. They’re all simply innocents seeking to avoid persecution by ISIS and/or Assad, remember?
Who was the gentleman that was always saying, “Aren’t ye a wee bit auld ta be believin’ in Leprechauns, laddie?”
Or something like that.
*grin*
This business in East Germany is stirring up the extreme right-wingers, and not in a good way, not at all.
If Merkel had her brains in her head, instead of in her desk drawer, she’d know how much trouble she’s generating. I guess paid voters/migrants aren’t as great as she thought they’d be.
She’s started to back off the “sustainable energy” rhetoric that she was spouting last year, partly because she’s running out of other peoples’/countries’ money.
This has been simmering for a long time, and if whatever happens becomes truly destructive, the blame will and should fall on her (or so I hope).
In this day and age, nothing seems to stick to these politicians. We’ve seen evidence of that in the swamp.
Strange, the folks in that picture certainly don’t look like the angry, young, alt-right males the media keeps telling everyone about. Maybe they just caught their parents/girlfriends/wives on camera, waiting for their young Nazis in training so they can walk them home?
Happy weekend to all you TAHellions.
Et vous aussi, Graybeard!
Vielen Dank, Ex-PH2.

California bullet train project on track to blow through billions of more dollars
California Bullet Train
Fox News Link
$100B, as in Billion, US Dollars to float this Cluster Foxtrot? It’s time for the serfs to take torches and pitchforks to Governor Moonbeam’s house.
You mean “California Bullet Con Game”?
Yeah, someone’s making bank on this boondoggle, paid for by the tax payers of California.
Is any real-world physical work, such as laying track lines, being done on this thing?
Or is this just one of those mysterious chasms into which tax money flows and never comes out?
Glad I do not live in California.
Ditto that. Twenty-plus years ago it cost about a million dollars a mile to build a railroad right of way from scratch and that would have been god for about 40MPH freight so one can only guess what the RoW would cost for the CA Bullet Train SANS all the bullshit, lawsuits, palm greasing and kickbacks going on right now.
Don’t forget the environmentalists and ecologists. They want safe animal crossings, every test known to science completed and all environmental impact studies done…twice. Unless of course, the state agrees to pay large donations to Green Peace, PETA and other tree hugging, ozone friendly organizations. Only then will they get the ‘smile a mile green stamp of approval’.

But picking up poop on SanFran sidewalks pays about $182.000 a year with full benefits.
My own view is that to understand how the high-speed rail hustle worked, you need to know the specific terms of the original bond issue passed by voters. What was approved was roughly $10 Billion to get the project to completion with some additional federal funds. A stipulation was that no more than 10 percent of the bond funds be used for administrative costs.
Which might sound reasonable until you stop to consider that $1 Billion for administration is a lot of money with not much accountability involved.
It would also be no surprise if the people who pushed hardest to get the bond issue passed are the same people now holding down lucrative positions with the high-speed rail authority. Too, they have likely been aware from the jump that the chances of the project being completed have always been somewhere between slim and none.
Do they even have a mile of track built yet? Last I heard they were still trying to buy up the right of way. This thing does not make any economic sense except as a wealth redistribution scheme. From the taxpayers to the politically connected class.
Surprised anyone is allowed to refer to it as a “bullet train.” How many does that title must trigger?
To a Railnerd like me that picture is as FAKE as it can be, there is NO catenary above the locomotive and the pantograph is down.
It needs a front clip off a 1968 Ford Mustang.
And “they” are trying to Californicate Texas with a similar project from Houston to Dallas.
that one was on the front burner since TTC AND there is or was a leg discussed for Houston to Austin, Austin to Dallas (Metro).
Which is the greater problem for California?
Lack of high speed rail ransit
Or
Lack of long-term water supply, including drought reserves
….
Of course they want to spend $100 Billion of high-speed rail!
Insane. Provably insane.
It’s easy to make short-sighted, financially irresponsible decisions when you know that the federal government will always be there to bail you out.
Speaking of water, did they ever do any more than a band aid repair to that damn that nearly broke? Governor Moonbat was sure eager to hand out all he could to illegal aliens versus doing upkeep on vital infrastructure!
My week would not be complete with out an update at TAH on the diminutive dummy, Phony Kyle Christopher Barwan, the never a Ranger, Airborne, Special Forces, Officer, CIA, lying scammer. Ol’ Convict No. H50625 Barwan, Kyle C. is still under the control of the Florida Department of Corrections, stashed away in the system’s Lancaster Correctional Instution, (I have never been inside there, but have been in that area several times, and it is not a nice place to spend a Florida Summer. Barwan, like most of the miscreants making the news stories here in Florida is not a Floridian, but has infiltrated the state, bringing his shitbaggery from elsewhere; Illinois via Kentucky in his case.
His current release date, (good time considered), is now set for November 22, 2018:
http://www.dc.state.fl.us/offenderSearch/detail.aspx?Page=Detail&DCNumber=H50625&TypeSearch=AI
It’s too bad that his release date is drawing closer. Will he have learned anything useful, or will he revert to type?
He will revert to type. I almost guarantee it…
I believe that within 12 hours of his release Kyle Christopher Barwan will be on some sort of social media trying to hustle something up. That is why I try to make a post here, once a week, plus blow him up on Facebook, and anywhere else I might land. Using his name in each comment, by each of us, will further insure that he will be seen by anyone going to goooooogle to check him out. His father said it best in a comment at the Polk County Sheriff’s site when the video on Barwan was posted by Grady Judd: “Kyle has lied since he could talk and will never work for a living. He will take from good people, to support himself.”
I wonder if Kyle Christopher Barwan hasn’t already started his con games on Women via pen pal programs?
It’s not pretty but it has been known to effective. When some folks are overrun by feral tomcats they have used a cat in the boot neutering process. I’ve never done that but have “adjusted” certain livestock.
Ol’Kyle could use some “tweaking” and a collar of shame when he gets out–which is not suggest that he change his name to Nancy. Just a little something to help him take the “edge” off of his distractions.
John Giduck – the turd with a face!

She doesn’t know us very well.
Correct on both of the above counts. Is Guidickless still roaming this big blue marble? Figured he might be in Super Max by now. lol
I wouldn’t be surprised if we heard about Giduck running his suck about how he did a HALO jump from Blobfish’s C130 over Macho Grande!
Giduck has been left by dogs on lawns throughout the US and Russia. That prick has some dickless Air Force Academy tye that has his head so far up Giduck’s ass that it explains why Giduck is so fat.
Giduck would love to be in supermax – so many balls to work in SuperMax…so little time.

I Before E
Except when your foreign neighbor Keith received eight counterfeit beige sleighs from feisty caffeinated weightlifters. Weird!
Happy weekend, y’all. Remember, I before E, except, well, whenever.
Don’t expect any help from the VFW National Headquarters when it comes to matters such as dealing with embellishers such as Richard Hollingsworth.
The newly elected National Commander is not even NDSM eligible and only has membership in the VFW by the retroactive award of the KDSM 20 years after he did a one year tour (83-84) to Korea as a Army PFC E-3. But one posted article has already described him as a “DMZ Combat Veteran” when in actuality he was a Air Defense Artillery 16P Chaparral Missile Crewman whose only “combat” came from fighting the keeper pins on the tow bar of the M578 VTR that pulled his broke-dick track out to it’s fighting position during an EDRE/ORE.
Same deal for the newly elected National Adjutant. His one year tour to Korea happened about the same time and he was an Air Force E-3/E-4 Travel Pay Voucher Typist.
Precisely why VSO type clubs don’t appeal to me. Far too many Beta Males running the show, afraid to call out a proven phony, and pushing political correctness.
Our AL Post requires a verifiable 214 for membership, but yeah FC, you’re right, lots of them are all about the numbers/dues paid game. Have a great “working man’s holiday” fellow dickweeds/es.
When I moved back to Alaska I went to join the local VFW. When I asked if I needed to show my DD214 I was told they went on the honor system. I told them no thanks and walked away.
And I felt embarrassed given my qualifications.
I joined the VFW years ago but didn’t stay long. I happened to be working nights at the time and the local VFW post had a kitchen and bar that opened at 5 A.M. You could get a decent breakfast of steak and eggs, and a Bloody Mary for about $5.
A minor problem with the VFW at the time, it was on me and not on them, was that about 90 percent of the members were ex-Navy with an average age of around 60. After awhile it got sort of tedious hearing the same stories such as how that time on a “tin can” off the Azores in ’44 the galley *gasp* almost ran out of Spam.
While the bad news was that I had to work nights, the good news was that it got me out of having to apologize for missing the VFW raffle, or meeting, or potluck dinner.
And don’t even get me started on the fact that the new Adjutant has been earning a six figure salary pushing papers around at the National Headquarters for the past 20 years or that the new National Commander will probably be getting a 200K plus salary for the upcoming year while pushing his agenda of more Call of Duty video game conventions (to attract the younger crowd) and getting a nationwide program underway to have horses become the new comfort/service animals for “disabled” vets.
That’s kinda weird. The VFW did not want Viet of the Nam vets for many years.
But even more so the Korean vets.
So here you have a couple of Korean vets running a shitshow. Weird.
And what’s even weirder is that according to the Natl Commanders official bio, he was allowed to join the VFW at least four years (in 2000) before he became eligible for membership via the creation/retroactivity of the KDSM by DOD in 2004.
It’s probably only me, but I would sure like to see the DD215 that awarded him the KDSM just to see what the date on it says.
Claw: Just received the September 2018 issue of the VFW Magazine and read B.J. Lawrence’s Bio..Interesting..🤔
Also read the article on the Veteran’s History Project (“Tell Your Story to the Library of Congress”).
The project that interviewed DAB:

Yep, and now I expect the Adjutant for VFW Post 735 (John DumbAssio, oops, Danunnzio) to be all emboldened by the fact that the new National Commander/Adjutant are just like him (as far as KDSM eligibility) and he’ll be back here on TAH to call us all morons again.
As a side note, the VFW Post 735’s Book of the Face has not yet been updated yet to reflect Hollingsworth’s promotion to District 7 Commander and subsequent installment of Gulf War Jann Spann as the new Post Commander, but when that does happen, I’ll let everyone know.
And yeah, Live PD is my new guilty pleasure.

After a long absence I am back. My PTS and dealing with my pedophile brother-in-law got the best of me and I started self medicating again. I know that is an excuse because ultimately the decision to pick up the bottle again was mine. I checked myself into the Chris Kyle Patriots hospital which specializes in PTS and substance abuse treatment. It was either that or eventually drink myself to death. I feel that it was a great decision because I feel like I’m back to my old self again. I spent years playing lip service to getting help for my PTS and finally decided to get serious and do something about it. I’m glad I did because I now feel like my old self again. I know I still have a long road ahead, but am thankful to have an awesome supporting family that has my back.
Because of what my family and I have gone through throughout the years I have a deep disdain for those who falsely claim to have PTSD in order to excuse their bad behavior or make a few bucks. Hell, I have actually been diagnosed with it through the VA and civilian health care professionals and I don’t use it as an excuse for MY bad behavior. Those that falsely claim it need to spend some time in a place like that and see what hell we and those that love us go through and maybe they will rethink their claims.
Well, then here’s something that will make you feel a little better.
Your hometown football team beat Monon tonight 56-0.
Awesome
Great to hear from you, Twist.
You also have this “family” to tap into when you need us. And the freedom to walk away from us when we aren’t helping! Meanwhile, best wishes to you and thanks to your family for taking this journey with you.
Welcome back.
Friends of Bill W are always welcome back.
One day at a time.
Bill and I are buddies now.
Anytime you want to talk, been a friend of Bill and Dr Bob for 24 years. I understand the PTS, mine not from combat but from 22 years of working law enforcement.
Keep coming back, it works if you work it.
The upcoming film ‘First Man’ about Neil Armstrong & the years leading up to the moon landing in 1969 will omit the American Flag being planted.
From Wiki:
In the movie, the planting of the American Flag on the Moon by Neil Armstrong is never shown. The producers and actors decided that the event should be credited to ‘humankind’, rather than the United States, despite the fact that U.S. taxpayers funded and supported the entire Apollo program from start to finish.
FUCK political correctness, I’m not wasting my money to go see it!
Well we did come in peace for all mankind, and all that.
We -Americans-.
(Grin)
The Chinese advisers on the film explained the movie would be banned in China if that scan was put in. All the big movie studios have paid advisers to make the movie China friendly.
YGTBFSM! Seriously?
Yup!
In World War Z the virus was supposed to come from China but the advisers told them North Korea would be better.
And don’t forget the (absolutely terrible) remake of Red Dawn that had the red invaders changed from Chinese to North Koreans to not offend the Chinese market.
JESUS H. CHRIST on a brokedick bamboo raft, omitted in order to kiss up to commies? FUCK HOLLYWIERD!!!
Oh sure – that makes sense. We should pay the Chinese (or anybody else, for that matter) to tell us how to celebrate American achievement and pass along to future generations pride in American accomplishment.
(Really? Somebody missed the sarc in the above??)
Absolutely nothing wrong with acknowledging what others do. There is something very wrong with denying one’s own doings, good and bad.
SMH. Got to get out more I reckon. Another reason why I make a very spirited attempt to not buy any China built crap. Hell, didn’t even know they redid Red Dawn. Had an electronics store with VHS Video Rental back when that came out. One of the titles that I had ordered multiple copies of. Rented that flick out every night for several months. Still use parts of that story line when we give history and what if lessons to school groups. Deo Vindice
This story caught my eye..the US Army NCO retired on 31 August 2018:
“From Vietnam to Afghanistan: A U.S. veteran’s four decades of duty”
https://www.upi.com/Top_News/US/2018/04/23/From-Vietnam-to-Afghanistan-A-US-veterans-four-decades-of-duty/2351522731158/
I commend the NCO for serving in the US Navy and the US Army. Just thought the title of the article was a bit misleading. Here is the breakdown of his service:
Total active duty time: 24 years 8 months
Total National Guard and Navy Reserve time: 6 years
Total Military time: 30 years, 18 days
Total deployed time: 58 months with 6 deployments plus 1 year un-accompanied tour in Korea
Total career span: 44.5 years
What is more interesting is that he was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal (he was born @ 1956/1957.
Frequent Wind VSM.
Also, if you read the comments attached to the article, that fellow who shall not be named, but who wears an Air Assault Badge on a Santa Claus suit, turned the comments section into being all about him and not about the subject of the article.
Some things never change./smile
Claw: What threw me off was the comment SFC Wright made about his VSM:
“As to the award of the VSM that some have questioned here; Congress recognized the Vietnam Evacuation as the 18th and final campaign of the war and extended the official end of the war to April 30, 1975 — the last day of evacuation efforts. Those of us participating were awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. In 2004 pursuent to section 542, Public
Law 107-314 those participating have the right to EXCHANGE the AFSM for the VSM.
I have a DD215 in my OMPF verifying that conversion.
http://fallofsaigon.org/VietnamServiceMedal.php”
The reference SFC Wright provided was about Marines, not Navy, exchanging the AFEM for the VSM. Unless the Navy are considered Marines or Visa-Versa?
SFC Wright stated he served on the USS ENTERPRISE for OPERATION FREQUENT WIND, so in research, I thought “Well, despite his age, he does qualify for the VSM” but after I read his comment justifying his VSM, I just thought it was a bit odd.
And yes, I read the comments posted by “that fellow who shall not be named”…yep…you are spot on..kinda sad, especially when Stolen Valor is addressed by “that fellow” (an easy fix: quit claiming/wearing the Bullwinkle Badge, the Infantry Cord and the Green Tabs, but as you said, some things never change..)
Thank you for clarifying OPERATION FREQUENT WIND. Good for SFC Wright, even though I still think the title to the story was misleading.
😉
What amazes me is that he has the gall to wear that unearned bling, yet posts a photo of himself wrenching on a radio at a test bench.
Yeah, that Guy has some issues.
Bernath is still dead.
I’ll drink to that.
I wonder if he ever figured out that he’s dead.
That guy had serious mental health problems, I wonder if the hospital in Portsmouth didn’t put him out to protect themselves and the good people of Virginia.
There were so many times when he could have unfucked himself and just walked away from all of it.
That bastard was certifiable, as demonstrated by the insane drivel he wrote and his bizarre performances in court, especially before the State Bar of Commiefornia.
I wonder if the term “Don’t be a Bernath “ is still used among Legit Attorneys that know about him?
Daniel Bernath and Fred Phelps have two things in common:
1. They’re both dead.
2. Both of them were disbarred Lawyers, Phelps in Kansas, Bernath in California.
If you are the Vice President of a proud but humble woman owned business that sells software to the federal government, and that company has not had a sale in years, nor is the company website available online, can you still celebrate the Labor Day holiday? Or since every day you have no work, is every day the Labor Day holiday? Inquiring minds want to know.
Well, technically, that company qualifies as broke and out of business, doesn’t it?
So it’s holiday all year long.
No, but you may celebrate Labrador day, Liberia Day, or Lobotomy Day in its place.
Been busy this weekend putting stuff together and getting things done, and found some old copies of Cook’s Illustrated, almost 20 years old, from when they were published six times a year. And wouldn’t you know it? There’s a better recipe for beef burgundy and one for chicken picatta, plus some handy kitchen tool hints.
Well, now they’re still published in print, six times a year, so I am in cat heaven.
Post-Jonn TAH is quite different. At times it could easily be mistaken for any blog dedicated to food, fags, or fair and foul weather. Thankfully, those topics are sometimes interrupted by SV phony balonies and 2nd A-related stories. I’m not knocking it, although I don’t like it, b/c I understand why things can’t be as they were once. Just saying what others must be thinking lately. I don’t much give a shit that way.
73 YEARS AGO TODAY IN HISTORY: JAPAN SURRENDERED! Today, 2 September 1945, aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, Japan formally surrendered to the Allies, bringing an end to World War II. By the summer of 1945, the defeat of Japan was a foregone conclusion. The Japanese navy and air force were destroyed. The Allied naval blockade of Japan and intensive bombing of Japanese cities had left the country and its economy devastated. At the end of June, the Americans captured Okinawa, a Japanese island from which the Allies could launch an invasion of the main Japanese home islands. General Douglas MacArthur was put in charge of the invasion, which was code-named “Operation Olympic” and set for November 1945. The invasion of Japan promised to be the bloodiest seaborne attack of all time, conceivably 10 times as costly as the Normandy invasion in terms of Allied casualties. On 16 July 1945, a new option became available when the US secretly detonated the world’s first atomic bomb in the New Mexico desert. Ten days later, the Allies issued the Potsdam Declaration, demanding the “unconditional surrender of all the Japanese armed forces.” Failure to comply would mean “the inevitable and complete destruction of the Japanese armed forces and just as inevitable the utter devastation of the Japanese homeland.” On 28 July, Japanese Prime Minister Kantaro Suzuki responded by telling the press that his government was “paying no attention” to the Allied ultimatum. President Harry Truman ordered the devastation to proceed, and on 6 August, the B-29 bomber Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, killing an estimated 80,000 people and fatally wounding thousands more. After the Hiroshima attack, a faction of Japan’s supreme war council favored acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration, but the majority resisted unconditional surrender. On 8 August, Japan’s desperate situation took another turn for the worse when the Soviet Union declared war against Japan. The next day, Soviet forces attacked in Manchuria, rapidly overwhelming Japanese positions there, and a second atomic bomb was dropped on the Japanese coastal city of Nagasaki. Just before midnight… Read more »
HAPPY VJ Day, everyone!!!
And the saddest part is there was not one word about VJ Day on a single Lame Stream Media Source/Site.
What was the official dates that the the war in VN, the Korean war, the Civil war, and WW I ended? If you can get one, you’re good. Two? You are a history buff. More than two? You’re teaching history somewhere. Some of you are certain you have one, and that is the date WW I ended. You’re probably wrong. And don’t bother giving the dates. We all have google. My point is that even great events fade so don’t despair about VJ Day being overlooked.
It gets even murkier, 2/17. What “end date” are you talking about? Agreed end of hostilities? Formal peace agreement? Date of annual public remembrance or holiday (and if so, in which nation)? End of campaign medal eligibility?
Generally, these are 4 different dates (but sometimes fewer, in the case of Korea). And sometimes more than 4 dates logically exist, as Vietnam shows with the now-recognized 18th campaign (e.g., Frequent Wind – which occurred over 2 years after US involvement in the Vietnam War had “ended”).
I was referring to “official” end dates. Korea didn’t help matters inasmuch as North and South Korea agreed only this year to end the war. In that case, I would have had to use the armistice date which ends open hostilities but not a conflict. I should have omitted Korea. The others all had end-of-war dates, with peace treaties or, in the case of VN, an “Agreement on Ending the War and Restoring Peace in Vietnam.” The Civil War’s official end did not come at Appomattox, as most of us were taught. WW I officially ended not on 11 November 1918 but with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles.
My point was that you need to specify precisely what you mean by the term “official end” to a particular war. There are at least three plausible candidates: formal legal end via peace treaty or agreement; cessation of hostilities; or (for the US military), the end of eligibility for the conflict’s campaign medal. And the public might argue (wrongly, IMO) that the date the war’s end is celebrated or remembered should be considered the “end date”.
Case in point: Korea. The Armistice ending hostilities became effective on 27 July 1953 and mostly ended hostilities (well, except along the DMZ and in other incidents at various other locations in South Korea in which North Korean and US/South Korean forces clashed sporadically). However, DoD set the end of the Korean War period (in terms of eligibility for the Korean Service Medal) as 27 July 1954. There’s no holiday or public remembrance, so that’s a moot point. And while the Panmunjom Declaration (27 April 2018) was a step in the right direction, it does not appear to be a formal peace treaty; thus, the Korean War apparently still has not ended.
Vietnam is an even more confused mess. Like Korea, there’s no annual public holiday or remembrance date marking the end. The Paris Peace Accords were signed on 27 Jan 1973 – but DoD has two different end dates for eligibility for the VSM: 28 March 1973 and 30 April 1975 (the latter pertinent only to those participating in Operation Frequent Wind, 29-30 April 1975, who wish to exchange the VSM for the AFEM originally awarded for participation in that operation).
Bottom line: here, “official end” depends on context. For DoD, the “official” end of a conflict, as defined by issuance of the campaign medal associated with same, is often different than the date of the formal legal end of the conflict, as well as the cessation of hostilities. It may either precede or follow – sometimes by a substantial margin – the formal legal end of the conflict.
