Gurkhas to provide security for Trump-Kim summit

| June 11, 2018

The Associated Press reports that the fearsome and famous Nepalese Gurkhas will be providing security for the Trump-Kim summit meeting this month in Singapore.

Selected among young men from impoverished Nepal, Gurkhas have been part of Singapore’s police force since 1949. There are reportedly about 1,800 Gurkha officers in Singapore, and they are a regular presence at high-security events. On Monday, they were seen standing guard at the heavily fortified St. Regis Singapore, where Kim arrived Sunday afternoon.

“This is a moment of pride to see the Gurkhas responsible for guarding such an important event,” said Krishna Kumar Ale, who served for 37 years in the British army before retiring back home in Nepal. “It shows that we Gurkhas have reached a point where we are trusted with the security of two of the most important people in the world.”

From Quartz;

Armed with assault rifles and traditional 18-inch khukri knives, the Gurkhas are a contingent of highly-skilled Nepali soldiers that have been part of Singapore’s police force since 1949, more than a decade-and-a-half before the nation received independence from British rule. Since then, they’ve played an important role in quelling race riots and guarding the Malaysia-Singapore border, besides protecting VIPs.

Read that, as well as a story about a former Gurkha who, as a civilian, took on 40 robbers who attacked a train. He won, killing three, wounding eight, while the remaining robbers decided to remain no longer. He had a machine gun. No, it was a rifle. No, it was handgun. No, it was a knife, actually.

Went to SF school with a Nepalese Army captain. He carried his massive Gurkha knife to the field for the final FTX. It rained for the first two days in the field; his knife turned into a massive blade of rust. Cool guy, but he should have oiled that blade and kept it dry.

Here another story of Tommy Prince.

“Sometimes Prince would fuck with the Axis troops just for the hell of it – badass PSY-OPS Sam Fisher shit. Like, he’d sneak into an Italian town at night, break into the infantry barracks, and steal everyone’s shoes off their feet while they were sleeping. Or he’d go into the SS Officers’ quarters and kill every third guy while he slept in his bed – the rest of the guys would wake up the next morning to find the dude next to him was dead from a knife wound to the throat, and they’d be appropriately freaked the fuck out of their minds.”

I’m guessing there are no stress cards in their training.

BTW, the average height of the Gurkha is 5′ 3″‘

SgtM

They used a casual barracks across from ours in the late 80’s in Hawaii. We bullshitted around with a few of them, I remember feeling like a giant among them.

Was that the time a Brit Lt managed to “trip and fall” at the farewell party?

Ah! Gurkhas stepping up, as always!

Didn’t they used to wear ostrich plumes in their helmets, or something? I know – that was a while back.

“This will cut.”

“This will kill.”

Because a big sonofabitch with a little knife and a scowl is not as scary as a little guy with a bigass knife and an “I will cut you” grin!

Interesting. I did not know that the Singaporeans has an agreement with Nepal to provide Gurkhas for Singaporean security forces.

After India became independent in 1948, Britain and the new Indian Armed Forces split the several Gurkha regiments between the two. with half staying with Britain and the other half being transferred to Indian Forces. But the Singapore arrangement is a new one on me.

I learn something new here on TAH everyday…

There was a Gurkha regiment guarding the border in Hong Kong in 1971. I met a British Army 1LT posted with them when I was on R&R there.

The Gurkha Contingent in Singapore came from those in the British Army who were stationed in Brit colonies after 1949. At that time Singapore was still part of Malaysia and Malaysia was still a British colony.

we had some of these guys with us at my FOB in Diwaniya, Iraq. we had mongolians on the wall woh had to pay for their bullets if they fired and didn’t have a body and these guys were the SHTF QRF if the Polish got in to something too deep for them to handel. it was nice to have a group with us that interpreted the rules of engagement loosley for a change…

Ex-PH2

In the steppes of Mongolia, supply stores are very few in number, and extremely far between.

Sgt Fon

but both groups knew how to cook a hella mean sheep up! i most likely ate more toxic material from the pallets they would cook that sheep and goats up on then all the fire pits in Iraq but it was worth it… i think i need a kebab right about now!

My grandfather used to tell some wild stories about the Gurkha he served with in the Burma Campaign during WW2.

I saw some of them when I was in A-stan, they’re some VERY badass Hombres!

mr. sharkman

I had the supreme honor of receiving a Khukri from a Gurkha soldier.

Having worked with them on 2 occasions and near to them on numerous others, my official opinion is ‘they are not to be fucked with’.

On several occasions, I witnessed moderately-to-seriously wounded Gurkha soldiers attempt to refuse medical treatment that would take them off the front line because (paraphrased) ‘Leaving your brothers on the line is a sign of cowardice’.

Wherever they go, the bad guys quickly learn that their arrival is bad news for the bad guys.

MrFace

I strongly suggest everyone read both of these books by Paul Kirchner:

https://www.amazon.com/Deadliest-Men-Worlds-Combatants-Throughout/dp/1581602715

https://www.amazon.com/More-Deadliest-Men-Ever-Lived/dp/1581606907/ref=pd_sim_14_1?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=1581606907&pd_rd_r=W6QQF2HR7X2RZH9B2XHB&pd_rd_w=HK2PP&pd_rd_wg=NNpqC&psc=1&refRID=W6QQF2HR7X2RZH9B2XHB

One of them has a section on Gurkhas that I vividly remember; alas, since they were both great books I can not remember which one.

With that, I was so impressed by the story that I eventually read ALOT about such fierce warriors.

Cheers,
MrFace

Piss a Gurkha with a Khukri off and one’s head will literally roll off their shoulders before they even knew what happened. Let’s see, other than while in college and a few trips to China, this is fatty ‘lil Kim-Cheese’s only jaunt outside of his little hermit kingdom, will he even remotely know how to act someplace where he doesn’t have unlimited authority?

Stephen F. McCartney, M.D.

Saw them in Uruzgan Province in 2007. They were smaller but in tremendous cardiovascular shape. They would run thru a village and the Taliban would run out the back door heading for their lair in the hillsides. The Ghurkas would be as fast as billygoats..catch up with them and waste them with their knives. The Talban were terrified of them.

Two things. First, the notion that women should be admitted to the Gurkha Regiment was being pushed by the Brits for several years. And the result? No women. Their place is in the home, according to the cultural view. Second, there’s a place in Nepal that many Gurkhas retire to. I don’t know but I imagine the crime rate there is near zero and that the recidivism rate is zero. There are no second chances with Gurkhas.

HMC Ret

Some genuinely bad guys. As noted, there is probably no ‘time out’ or ‘stress card’ used.

I saw the men who were Kim’s personal guards on TV. They are selected at birth for their looks, which includes no blemishes that can not be easily concealed with clothing. They were wearing sunglasses, black suits with tie and black shoes. They were running in step with Kim’s limo. Each was almost an exact replica of the one next to him. No, there were no ladies. I wouldn’t want to mess with them, either.

HMC Ret

A gesture that Kim was genuinely serious about eliminating his Nukes and ‘normalizing’ relations with the rest of the world would be the return of the Pueblo. If Trump can pull off that coup, it would be a giant movement in the right direction. Of course, we all know that any such progress was brought about by the progress opieceofshit made during his 8 years as a waste of space calling himself our president. Yeah, that’s it, Trump had nothing to do with it.

NK’s people have had about enough of a steady diet of turnips and radishes or whatever else they scrounge for over there. If they have seen any pictures of the overweight American population as well as grocery stores stuffed to the rafters with goodies, I’m thinking they have had all they can stand. He needs to quickly start feeding his people, ridding himself of his fleet of who knows how many limos and cut down on the number of massive parades to say, oh, one a week. Wonder what it costs to put on one of those displays? They don’t have the money for that crap

The good times have to end of Kim.

Jarhead

Regardless as to how far presumed security has gone to see this upcoming meeting go smooth, it’s likely that the Kennedy team securing the Dallas parade route in Nov. 1963 attempted to replicate the task. My personal preference for this meeting would to have Trump provided full security by the Gurkas; while fat boy the Ungrateful Dicktator be provided security by the newest LGBT cub scout pack of Winkydink, Mississippi

Gurkhas are human beings and will die the same way any human would if you shoot them in the right place.
