Stephen Hawking passes

| March 14, 2018

Probably the most famous theoretical physicist and ALS victim of our time has passed according to Stars & Stripes. Stephen Hawking lived an astounding 50 years after his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS – Lou Gehrig disease as it’s known in the US) in 1969. Many patients last only several months after the diagnosis.

A severe attack of pneumonia in 1985 left him breathing through a tube, forcing him to communicate through an electronic voice synthesizer that gave him his distinctive robotic monotone.

But he continued his scientific work, appeared on television and married for a second time.

As one of Isaac Newton’s successors as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University, Hawking was involved in the search for the great goal of physics — a “unified theory.”

Such a theory would resolve the contradictions between Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity, which describes the laws of gravity that govern the motion of large objects like planets, and the Theory of Quantum Mechanics, which deals with the world of subatomic particles.

For Hawking, the search was almost a religious quest — he said finding a “theory of everything” would allow mankind to “know the mind of God.”

“A complete, consistent unified theory is only the first step: our goal is a complete understanding of the events around us, and of our own existence,” he wrote in “A Brief History of Time.”

In later years, though, he suggested a unified theory might not exist.

The ALS Association says that veterans are twice as likely to be afflicted with ALS as their civilian peers. There hasn’t been an official reason to the cause, but ALS is a presumptive condition for veterans as far as the VA is concerned, meaning that they’ll take care of most of your needs. Since most people don’t show signs of ALS until they are more than 50 years old, it’s nice to know that the VA will be there for you if you need help.

But, as far as Mr Hawkins is concerned, I’ll take 76 years old.

He left us to deal with all that global warming he was a believer in…

MCPO NYC USN Ret.

He also said we have less than 200 years to get off earth before the aliens come, an asteroid attack or mother natures broken thermometer kills us all!

USMCMSgt (Ret)

It’s alright, Master Chief.

You probably already know this, but Space Forces are coming.

Shit hot.

Dr. Hawking was a brilliant physicist. He had a great self-deprecating sense of humor too. His books are written in a way that makes them very accessible.

His name will be remembered along with Einstein, Galileo, Newton, and da Vinci. Not bad company to be in.

Rosalee A Adams

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.

Hawking declared nothing out there and God did not create the universe ie he was the final answer.
He found out he is not…..and there IS something
out there.
Sad that he was so ignorant and dismissive in what really matters in life.

He went full climate change retard. Lost me.
Sorry for his suffering.

LC

Ha! Even if you insist climate change is completely fake, that’s like someone in the early 18th century saying:

“Newton died? Sure, he discovered calculus, founded classical mechanics, advanced tons of scientific fields and is probably the greatest genius the world has ever known.. but he went full alchemy retard. Lost me.”

Some Guy

I’m sure his ghost is just heart-broken over that loss too! 🙂

The Other Whitey

Geniuses are people too. Hawking was smart, but still perfectly capable of getting it wrong. Doesn’t mean his contributions aren’t worth remembering.

Frankie Cee

When most would have given up, he dug in for the long fight, and gave us so much to ponder. RIP Sir.

The Other Whitey

Indeed. If I was him, I would be begging for the plug to be pulled after about my third day in the wheelchair. It takes a different kind of tough to persevere through that.

HMC Ret

Roger that, TOW. I have claustrophobia. Bad. Being confined to a w/c, to me, would be extremely confining. I’m afraid I would go full crazy. No sarcasm intended. I’m serious.

“Greetings Mr. Hawking.”

Hawking: “Shit! I don’t suppose there is any chance I can reconsider that faith business?”

Graybeard

My thought as well.

A brilliant human mind is still a human mind, therefore limited.

He was brilliant, and a great scientist – although I disagree with many of his non-physics positions. He is to be admired for the courage he showed in continuing with a disease that would leave most of us accomplishing nothing.

The Other Whitey

Exactly.

M48DAT

What a beautiful man. RIP Professor.

AW1Ed

Eccentricities aside, his was a great mind and he prevailed under terrible handicaps. There’s a lot to admire here.

Fair winds and following seas, Professor Hawking.

HMCS(FMF) ret

Well put, AW1…

As someone who has a scientific background that doesnt extend much past wonderment over the Mentos in Coke reaction I cannot fathom understanding most of what he theorized let alone thinking it up for the first time.

As for ALS, I did not know it mainly struck after age 50 as the only two people I personally knew with ALS died in their 40s, one a Vet and one not. Do we even have any idea a cause?

Ex-PH2

Read some place that with his keyboard voice synthesizer, it took him sometimes an hour to form a word. That’s real persistence and patience.

MSG Eric

I watched a documentary a few years back of him and his assistant who was a physicist trying to write out his new theory. It was literally one letter at a time based on where he was looking on the screen. His assistant would have to read his facial features to determine if a letter was correct or not.

Seems that would be like chiseling a novel into stone.

AW1Ed

I read that even after the voice synthizer technology improved, he kept his “signature” voice.

Thunderstixx

I can imagine that he now is learning how, either right or wrong he was on his insistence that there is a God particle and that the Big Bang and all the matter in the Universe originated from nothing at all.
Hmmm….
I took care of an ALS patient that used the Word’s Plus computer system he used. They distributed it free and still do for ALS victims worldwide.
It worked with a Radio Shack TRS 80 and was a Godsend to my good friend Ray.
Ray was diagnosed at the same time his wife was diagnosed with terminal Breast Cancer and passed shortly after he was diagnosed. His level of function went way down after that even.
Traumatic experiences exacerbate the disease progression significantly.
Godspeed to you Dr Hawking. The world is a better place for you having lived.
He was an inspiration to ALS victims across the Earth.

MrFace

The “God Particle” is not as it sounds. It is referring to the Higgs Boson; which they have concluded does exist from experiments done in the HADRON collider in Geneva. Most creationists tend to think that the “God Particle” somehow means that this particle was the ultimate creation for the Big Bang when in actuality it is the only scalar boson known and is the one that crosses a Higgs Field which COULD lead to a Big Bang (although a Big Wave is probably more apt term for it.) So, with that, There may or may not have been a Big Bang but there most certainly is a Higgs Boson and interestingly enough, Higgs, the theorist who proposed the scalar boson, disliked the nomenclature of “God Particle” as it had nothing to do with what he was trying to prove. It was the media that assigned it the name and many physicists hate the term. Leave it to the media to fuck up science, yet again.

With all of that, despite his(Hawking) opposing views to mine (global warming, man must leave earth, etc,) He did provide a lot of theories that do make you wonder how some one can think of those, how to prove/disprove those theories, and if they really are true. He was a great thinker and theorist and should be noted for his contribution to the understanding of black holes, gravitational effects on space and time and many mathematical proofs which are vital to a greater learning.

Fuck nevermind, TLDNR.

Cheers,
MrFace

rgr1480

TLDNR …

Hmmmmmmmm…

Had to look that up; I had wrongly guessed it meant “Too Late- Do Not Resuscitate.”

It certainly was not “Too Long, Did Not Read.”

MrFace

Too Long Do Not Read,

Just a warning for those who come by it.

Dinotanker

I don’t agree with Dr Hawkings views on climate change.

I admire him greatly for having the pure guts and determination to LIVE. Wow… Id hope to have about 1/100th of the ‘nads he had if I were in the same boat.

God Speed, Dr Hawking.

Yef

Stephen who?

MSG Eric

Ask your mom, she knew him quite well I hear.

David

Read a book now and then. Would do wonders for the intellectual level of your commentary.

26Limabeans

He was the guy in the wheel chair on Big Bang Theory.

Mason

And The Simpsons, Futurama, Star Trek TNG, and many more. How many theoretical physicists can say that?

AW1Ed

To be statistically significant, first we need to know the number of theoretical physicists.

*grin*

Wilted Willy

I don’t agree with some of his opinions but he was truly a great man and a great mind. I admire him the most for his extreme struggle with ALS! He truly fought the good fight and I believe he won. Most people would have given up a long time ago, that he lived this long under those conditions, truly made him a hero in my mind. God speed Dr. Hawking, may you rest in peace and may God bless you. You were a great man!

HMCS(FMF) ret

Hell, Jonn… Hawking was telling the truth. Every real man knows that!

Grunt

No fucking surprise. When I read that he died, literally my first thought was “and how long until the #metoo crowd strikes??”

Sparks

Rest in peace Stephan Hawking.

RIP

Guy was a piece of shit. His science doesn’t negate that neither does his disease.

Day drinking again I see… 🍻

Gat Cat

He passed on pi day? Damn, kinda ruins an otherwise fun day. R.I.P. Mr. Hawking.

E4 Mafia For Life.

Stephen Hawking was a farce.

I think at one point long ago he became locked in.
His puppet masters merely wheeled him out for government grants.

Mr. Smarty-Pants should have dedicated his supposed brain power towards figuring out ALS and what can be done about it.

The super math geniuses laughed all the way to the bank knowing that it would take someone like me 250 years of math/physics study to call them out on the bullshit.

Hackers in the Ukraine and throughout the basements of North America fed smart sounding scientific words into Hawkings Speak ‘N Spell.

I don’t give a rats ass about black holes and objects that are 5 trillion billion billion to the nth power light years away from us and have been dead for 20 trillion years.

The Earth is flat and those lights aren’t far away, they are just tiny and low lumens or holes in The Great Egg where the Earth is inside of and our global warming has caused spawling making more holes in The Great Egg.
