Oath Keepers on guard at school
The Tribunist reports that an Oath Keeper, Mark Cowan, who claims to be an Army veteran, is on guard at a Fort Wayne, Indiana school with his AR-style rifle;
Cowan isn’t technically on school grounds, but he is close enough to monitor the premises.
He explained to WANE “that he is there to protect the students and ward off anyone who would pose a threat to their safety.”

Opinions on the Oath Keepers seem to be split along partisan lines. Cowan’s presence at the school hasn’t made everyone happy, either.
Here, let me bust your “partisan lines” for you. I wouldn’t let an Oath Keeper within range of my house for anything. They are a bunch of mouthy little pricks who can’t tell the business end of a firearm from their asshole. Most of them lie about their military service at their dick-measuring meetings and whenever they can get in front of media cameras. This is a recruiting stunt by Cowan, why else would he be wearing the Oath Keeper finery to guard a school? I wouldn’t let him guard my cat’s litter box.
I don’t know if Cowan is a veteran or not, I only know that I don’t need to belong to an organization to remind myself that I took an oath. Especially an organization so full of valor thieves as Oath Keepers.

I think of it in terms of OPSEC: don’t let the bad guys know who or where the good guys are.
I agree, however a few visible weapons makes a statement. The presence shows interest and makes the perp wonder what isn’t obviously seen that can also take him down. Provides an enticement as well.
Concealed carriers can cover the obviously armed sentry in case he attracts attention.
True. The tactic I would think would work would be allow the open carry, but give them body armor.
A concealed carry with body armor is hard to overlook, but having the concealed carry folks provide supporting/suppressive fire for the open carry guard would, I suspect, help a lot.
Yeah depends on the objective. Are you trying to remain completely concealed and then ad lib on first contact or do you want to set up the area with a plan aimed at attracting a potential shooter to a certain “target” and then putting a plan in motion that IDs, separates and neutralizes the dickhead quickly?
IMO just walking around is a waste especially if the team has any tactical ability.
Good planning would never let the shooter drive the reaction force. They need to make the shooter their bitch.
I was thinking the offsite/reaction force would be discreet (hammer) and the inside/guard force would be visible/uniformed (anvil).

So – again me showing my ignorance in spades here – would it be tactically superior to have the obviously armed guard(s) to draw the attacker and be the anvil, a swift-reaction-force to serve as the hammer, and the school staff to be the cut-off chisel if needed? (Trying to keep the blacksmith analogy going there.)
I would want to funnel that dickhead into a predetermined killbox free of students/staff.
My thinking is in the best scenario, the perp never gets to an area where he can interact with a student or faculty.

You’d need an ROE drawn up with the local LEOs and school to be sure that you weren’t going to be the first one shot by police as soon as you stepped on school grounds.

It’s one thing to stand around with your dick in your hand all day long wondering if today is the day; it’s another to get three or ten kids shot by officer friendly because he’s a panic monster who can’t hit a man sized target without a reload.
As a teacher, this would be my biggest concern with being armed.
I’m a fan, and I’d volunteer for it if it became legal, but how are we organized? What are the ROE? How are we connected to, or quickly identified by, LE? That would have to be worked out to avoid fratricide.
This is always an issue when it comes LE and plainclothes guys, thus the badges on the neck chain and the windbreakers, neither of which are always feasible and the good guys do get hurt.
The worst situation is the one that’s breaking right now. Information is wanting and confusion as to who is where doing what is assured. In these situations, people of all ages and sizes are running or cowering–which argues strongly for teachers who want to be armed to be armed. They’re inside and most likely to quickly recognize the threat.
The training we had when I was a teacher was to lock the door, turn off the lights, and have the kids in a corner out of the line-of-sight of the door’s window. Exterior window provide a different problem. Another problem is that there may be concealment, but there is darn little cover in a classroom.
What I would have liked is to also be able to take up a position covering the door & out of line-of-fire of the kids with a pistol in hand. Having communication before anyone goes either direction through that door would hopefully mitigate a friendly-fire incident.
That makes good sense to me. I just watched a video of a Dad whose beautiful 15-year old daughter was murdered at Parkland. He said he never imagined he could do what he’s doing now (i.e., speak out publicly) but his daughter’s killing gave him the strength. He was calm and straightforward, saying that this business about gun control should not be the focus. He gestured to a CNN microphone that was put in front of him as he was talking and called them out for the phony baloney gun-control business. He said it’s all about keeping the kids safe now. Afterwards, the CNN person asked him something about assault weapons and the man said he’s no expert about guns and that all he wants is the kids to be safe. Man, did he make sense, and I am so sorry for his loss.
Good men like that suffer (and I cannot imagine his pain) and ghouls like CNN reporters don’t give a rat’s adz.

I really get tired of these grandstanding look-at-me types on all sides of these controversies.

I’m not trained in military or police tactics, but I know that it takes teamwork.
Even in my church current and former LEOs are developing policies and procedures for an active shooter event. A large proportion of the congregation has their LTC. The policy and procedures include the use of us low-training types. As the HMIC told me, rule #1 is: don’t get shot.

I first heard of Oathkeepers when I found one of their flyers at my station. I’ll admit, their basic premise sounded fairly good on the face of it, but seemed just tinfoil-hat-ish enough to give me pause. The more I found out about them, the less I liked them.
I had exactly the same response, TOW. And this asshat needs to remove his John Wayne-wannabe carcass away from the school and back to his momma’s basement.

I have given some thought to something similar, but my thoughts have revolved around specifically following my daughter around the school and not letting her out of my sight for an instant. Standing around like a jackass and menacing people at the door is another story.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Residents tell Adams News that a man, armed with an AR-15 is again ‘standing guard’ outside Northside High School in Fort Wayne today.
Several stories have followed since NewsChannel 15, WANE-TV broke the news, after getting tips two days ago. Chris Darby reported how Mark Cowan, an Army Veteran and ‘Oath Keeper,’ decided to take up a post guarding the school. He is not on school property and under Indiana law, he is doing nothing wrong. Fort Wayne Community Schools was not involved in his decision and did not ask him to guard the school.
According to the reporting, spokesperson for FWCS, Krista Stockman issued this statement:
“We take the security of our schools very seriously,” the statement reads. “We understand he has a right to be out there, but we do not believe it adds to the safety of our students. At North Side, as at all of our schools, we have security procedures in place. In addition, at North Side, we have armed police officers in the building every day.”
After several social media posts and a quick glance at public court records, it appears Mark Cowan has a recent conviction. He was charged in 2017 with a count of 35-42-2-1(c)(1)/MA: Battery Resulting in Bodily Injury.

Cowan said he sprung into action because Gibson was known as a habitual offender with dozens of arrests under his belt. In 2011, Gibson’s mug shot became infamous nationwide when he was arrested for the 48th time since 1992 for inhaling paint, according to WANE.
Since then, Gibson has been charged or arrested more than 30 times for misdemeanors of inhaling toxic vapors, public intoxication and battery.
“I’m a grandpa,” Cowan said. “I’m not gonna let you beat on both my grand kids without doing something. If (people) want to label me as a person who battered someone, that’s fine.”
Yeah, well, there is nothing about his being a wife beater or a child beater and, quite frankly, I think the guy explained himself, in plain words, very well.

IF – and I do mean IF – he had been asked by the school, because he has a child there, to take a watch during recess*, that would be different.
But nobody asked him (unless we’re informed otherwise) and he’s probably going to do more to frighten small children than anything else.
Suppose some parent comes to pick up his child because the kid is sick and the school called about it. Is this clown going to take a pot shot at the parent, no questions asked? That’s what his ‘stance’ seems to say. I could be misreading it, but that’s what I see.
So, aside from grabbing attention, what does he think he’s going to do at that school, other than annoying parents and scaring kids?

This is certainly a PR stunt, unless he can put together a duty roster of a bunch of other “Oathkeepers” who can post outside of schools five days a week for 6 or 7 hours each day. I think I’ve asked this question before, but it’s been a while, so here goes.
If residential buildings like apartment buildings are required to have doors everywhere exiting to fire escapes, then why don’t these schools have at least one fire door for each two classrooms, only accessible from inside, with a door between the two classrooms for safety?
Unless it’s a really old 3-story brick building like my now-gone high school, replaced by a larger building for more students, it seems like this is a safety factor that could easily be addressed.
One of my classrooms when I taught had two doors, on diagonally opposite walls.
What that meant was that if there was an active shooter I had to be concerned that the shooter could come from either door. If we were to evacuate, how could I know which door was the safe direction?
I believe the historically best evacuation route from a building like that is through the windows. Get out and get away early in the event and survivability improves dramatically, at least historically.
But then, one often prepares to fight the previous war.
The good news is the logo on his hoodie looks like a bulls eye, which should make him the first target allowing everyone else to run.
