“Shitholes” and stuff
Yesterday, the Washington Post (Huffington Post link because I ended my subscription to the Washington Post because I disagree with their editorial policy – the Huffington Post doesn’t require a subscription) claimed that President Trump referred to migration to the Untied States from “shitholes” in Haiti, El Salvador and Africa. The President denies that he said that, but that doesn’t matter in the world of journalism these days. The Washington Post’s anonymous sources (who, by the way, weren’t at the meeting when the comment was supposedly made) are news.
A number of people came out and called Trump’s characterization, whether he said it or not, insulting to immigrants. Well, that’s just ridiculous – he didn’t call immigrants shitholes, he called the countries they come from “shitholes” – maybe. The immigrants from those countries would have to agree – why else would they be immigrants?

When the US left Panama at the turn of the century, they quickly descended into shithole-level poverty. Within a few years, they got tired of it and began digging themselves out of “shitholiness” and voila.
They modernized the Panama Canal, making it wider for modern ship traffic and they began working on their automobile traffic congestion.
Other countries like El Salvador and Haiti send their people to the US instead of doing the hard work to rebuild their countries’ infrastructure and economies. Their idea of an economy is to live off of the cash those immigrants send home in remissions.
El Salvador’s embassy estimates that 500,000 Salvadorans live in the Metro DC area – El Salvador’s population is 5 million people – so 10% of El Salvador’s population live in the DC Metro area. It seems to me that many people would be a benefit to the country’s improvement – especially after they experienced life in the US.

Twenty years ago I went to Mexico for my son’s wedding at a resort town. My son’s mother-in-law took us up the coast to a real authentic Mexican town (not one based on all the touristas). I started calling it Shitholio because that was a very representative name. I vowed I would never go to Mexico again. That’s one promise it is easy to keep. My nephew was on a vacay in one of the well known resort towns and was robbed of all his cash by the police. Any American who goes there should just have “potential victim” tattooed on his or her forehead.

Hell, let’s look outside the state. Would Baltimore’s (another democrat stronghold) astronomical murder rate be a qualifying criteria? Or maybe another faithful DNC bastion (notice a pattern here?), Detroit? Steven Crowder and Not-Gay Jared did a video tour of that city a few months ago on YouTube. It was the literal definition of a shithole. Seriously, you could see clumps of shit on the sidewalk in some places.

Honest answer? The problem is it’s bad politics. We can debate back and forth all day whether calling a country a ‘shithole’ implies anything about the people there, but at the end of the day, it’s just not helpful for the ‘leader of the free world’ to say such things.
It reduces our influence and standing in the world because, regardless of whether you think various places are ‘shitholes’ or not, it’s in poor form for a President to say. We aren’t ‘making America great again’ by having everyone else think we’re a bunch of assholes.

Now, Tom Cotton (R-AR) and David Perdue (R-GA) both say they ‘do not recall’ the President using that term… which depending on your point of view is either a lame non-denial or an honest indication it didn’t happen.

Not particularly – I did list all the comments I’d seen on it, not just Durbin’s. Lindsey Graham is beating around the bush and saying he ‘confronted’ President Trump about comments, but isn’t confirming he used those words.
Frankly, I don’t care one whit about exactly which words he used. I’m just saying that if he made comments like this, he needlessly caused a mess. It served no positive purpose, and has had a negative effect.
How could POTUS hold a “closed-door” meeting without a stenographer, court reporter or some other way to verify what was actually said? Becayse we all know exactly how the left operates.

As to Roh-Dog’s stuff, I’m pretty damn sure that most psychologists and other sane people will tell you the mantra is, “If you’ve got nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” Not, “If you’ve got nothing nice to say, say it anyway because ‘yay honesty!'”.

Do I sympathize with the children who endure existing in Haiti? Of course I do. It’s a godawful shithole unfit for human habitation on the best of days. “Banana republic” would constitute a massive improvement. If every government they’ve had in living memory weren’t so corrupt, they could have a much higher standard of living, but nobody in a position of power in that country (when those positions are even occupied) is concerned with improving anything outside their own mansion. Our standing in the world is diminished when other leaders lose respect for us – which they do when we shoot ourselves in the foot like this. Any other Operation Uphold Democracy vets here? As someone who served in Haiti from September 1994 through February 1995 and saw pretty much the entire Northern part of the country, I can confirm that it is, indeed, a shithole.
Now as to whether the POTUS ought to be making such statements – I’m more ambivalent about that. On the one hand, the person occupying the highest political office in the land ought to be more circumspect about the way he talks.
Being diplomatic is part of the job and antagonizing people unnecessarily is just stupid – one of these days you’re going to antagonize someone whose support you need.

BTW, Jonn, the photo you posted accurately represents the parts of Port-au-Prince that I was able to see. In Gonaives, where our FOB was (FOB 33) the streets were wider but they still piled garbage in the middle of the streets. Literally, there were what looked like medians in the middle of the streets, made of garbage.
And the flies – the flies in Haiti were enormous, some of them probably with wingspans of more than an inch. And of course, no picture can capture the smell…
Now once you got outside of the cities, it was a lot better, but still desperately poor.
The poor condition of their country is mostly the result of centuries of horrible governance, either by wannabe monarchs like Henri Christophe, dictators like Papa Doc and Baby Doc, or communists like Aristide.
No matter who’s in charge, the wealthy have their mansions (the opulence of which would shock most Americans) and the rest of the people have nothing.

Haiti has been a republic since 1804 after a slave uprising kicked out the French. They were the second republic in the hemisphere. Their first leader was Emperor for Life Dessalines who ordered that the remaining white people on the island be massacred. He was assassinated in 1806. The revolution caused mass migration to New Orleans which has yet to end.
My understanding is that the other half of that island, the Dominican Republic, is nowhere near as governmentally screwed up as Hati.

News media stories about Trump’s “shithole” comment, whether he said it or not, seem to have multiple problems.
In the first place, what goes on in the Oval Office in a private meeting should be allowed to stay in the Oval Office. If you take away the ability of a chief executive to be candid, particularly in what amounts to a default off-the-record session, you’re potentially affecting his ability to make decisions.
Too, the news media has once again shown itself to be feckless in its refusal to identify sources. To some extent anonymity is now the norm instead of the exception. What’s also very likely is that the sources leaking “shithole” gossip aren’t doing it for the good of the country, they’re doing it to appear as savvy political insiders within a small unaccountable circle.
What also seems to have gotten lost in all the potty-mouth hysteria is the original subject under discussion. What Trump was talking about was the idea that merit-based immigration might be a better alternative to what’s in place now. He wasn’t being particularly racist or xenophobic. His argument has been that it might be time to start doing what is best for our own country instead of focusing on what’s best for some other wretched part of the world. Particularly when those other grim places often show no inclination to improve things on their own.

My niece and her daughter went on a Mission to Haiti a month ago.
They were touched by the genuine gratitude of the children they helped and appalled by the living conditions people were subjected to.

For the record, I spent about 8 months in Port au Prince. I’ve done mounted patrols all over the counties, and foot patrols in Cite Sole, day and night. I can reliably report that it is a shithole. Cite Sole at night reminded me of a post apocalyptic movie like Mad Max or A Boy and his Dog. I tried but failed to post a picture of a slim young RedDevil, fighting weight 200 pounds before battle rattle and radio, walking over the 2×4 that served as the bridge over the ‘sewer’ aka ‘middle of the street’. Next to me you can see a pig wallowing in human excrement. The whole time I’m thinking ‘if this breaks or I lose my balance, it’s Hepatitis or worse’… I’m sure it’s worse after the earthquake.
