Quds commander boasts of US troops killed
The Washington Times reports that Iran’s Quds Force deputy commander, Brigadier General Ismail Ghaani bragged about killing US troops during their intervention in the Iraq War. Of course, this isn’t news, we’ve known all along that Iran supplied Shi’ite militiamen in Iraq with improved explosive devices with which they attacked US convoys and set ambushes against US troops, but this is the first time they’ve admitted to it;
“Americans have suffered more losses from us then we have suffered losses from them,” Gen. Ghaani said, according to an article by Admad Majidyar, director of the Iran Observed Project at the Middle East Institute.
Mr. Majidyar wrote that the boasting came at a ceremony honoring the “martyred of the defenders of shrines” — Iran’s term for the militias it financed and trained in Iraq to fight the Islamic State and in Syria to support President Bashar Assad.
The Iranians worked closely with the militiamen fighting in the name of Muqtada al-Sadr, an Iraqi Shia cleric who hid out in Tehran while his acolytes died in the streets.

In Hyde Park on Sundays, Palestinian speakers soapboxing for their causes were immaculately dressed, also. It is perhaps the normal Modus Operandi among the most vile terrorists, of whatever stripe.
Circumstances were the same. Much of the bloodshed was of the sectarian kind. The Sons of Iraq, or Awakening Councils, or whatever, was a very effective method of ending the civil war and booting Al-Qaeda from large parts of Iraq. But it required the same thing – making peace with the enemy, forgiving the attacks on American soldiers, and giving them $ (although some extent that wasn’t slush funds to tribes, but things like schools & water pumps).
But from both Sadr & Sunni tribes, the agreement only worked because we made a promise to leave. I know a lot of people think we should have broken that promise, but I don’t think we could have without consequences.

Mookie Sadr (aka Moqtada al-Sadr) was only famous because he dad was a big name. He talked a good game until we made it too hot for his fat ass to hang out in Baghdad. Afterwards he exhorted his JAM fighters from the safety of Tehran. Came scampering back after we left.

No, the Sons of Iraq were a Sunni militia. Mostly former Saddam era military officers, soldiers, and security personnel that had been essentially forced out of jobs due to de-Bathification. For a while many of them had resisted US forces.
When the interests of coalition forces and the sectarian Sunni power players from the former Saddam government aligned it was recognized by both parties. So coalition leaders met with Sunni tribal and political/former military leaders reached an agreement where we would train and equip the “Sons of Iraq” if they would assist in our efforts to fight the more religiously driven Sunni (Al Qaeda aligned) militias.
The “sadr turds” were followers or militia members that had aligned themselves with a Shia Iraqi cleric named Muqtada Al-Sadr. At the time they called themselves the “Mahdi Army” (remember the green flags). Now they call themselves “Saraya al-Salam”.
The key distinction is their religious difference. Sadr turd = Shia (and religiously motivated), Sons of Iraq = Sunni (and more nationalistic motivations but still has Sunni sectarian influence).
Sons of Iraq no longer exist. First the Shia dominated government refused to allow them to integrate with formal Iraqi security forces and then later when the ISIL/ISIS rose to power their members were forced to either join ISIS, submit to ISIS rule, or escape.

Our patrol was the first to respond to an IED attack on an engineer convoy that killed an American soldier. My team and I captured the triggerman. He was Shia and was a member of the Iraqi police.

I guess I should have explained more context; the Iraqi police in our area where almost entirely Shia and they were largely commanded by Iran connected senior officers.
