Lt. Col. Jennifer Grieves, “person of the week” fired
Military.com reports that Lieutenant Colonel Jennifer Grieves, the former commander of Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464 in New River was canned after her command lost confidence in her ability to command. That stems from a domestic beef back in December.
Grieves, who enlisted in 1990 and would earn a commission eight years later, gained a level of celebrity when she became the first woman to ever command Marine One.
In 2009, ABC News named her a “person of the week” as she wrapped up her one-year tour in the post, reporting that her final flight featured an all-female crew. She also received a personal acknowledgment and send-off from then-President Barack Obama.

A certain someone who rhymes w/ “Marc” would hit it…
Me too.
Being a Marine, she might hit back!
We can only hope. JimV
Think she swings for the other team:

“The charges were subsequently dropped on Dec. 22, 2016 by the complainant, who is Grieves’ wife. The couple was married on Aug. 18, 2015.”
We tried to tell gays and lesbians “what you wanna get married?” Welcome to our world. Bahaaaaaaaaaa
Son to a Father.
Son: Dad do you believe in same sex marriage.
Dad: No Son they have suffered enough.
Self-inflicted damage.
I wonder if her soon to be ex realized that her getting relieved and retired early might have a negative impact on a future revenue stream?
Had she come clean at the time, she might have avoided the relief considering the charges were dropped.
Would you honestly be saying this if it was a man that beat his wife?
He’s not her type.
Being outstanding in a technical function does not necessarily equate to being an outstanding leader. Sounds like she smacked someone at her house after a noisy fight…yeah, that will kill a career.
Zeroes are droppin’ like flies…
Both sides of the bed it seems….
Oh damn…Spank Bank material
I didn’t know you like it rough.
BAMs are cray cray…but worth it.
“BAM”
Hadn’t heard that in a while!
and the Navy rides the WAVES, and the Army spreads WACs on the floor. Dating myself here…
That is so-o-o-o 1960s!
You know what they say… if you remember the ’60s, you probably didn’t REALLY experience them. That being said, my wife was technically a WAC when we were married. I actually picked up that line from my father, a WWII and beyond vet.
Is that better or worse than WM’s?
WMs is a vorboten term now, too. That and “Dark Green” are all on the list of words/phrases that must not be spoken.
Only one and a half year to retirement, I keep telling myself. . .
Of course if I made through eight years of that last guy who was president (Orama? Osama? Whatever. . .) I can make it through anything – even if his tentacles haven’t been completely undone yet. At least there’s not some huge Gay Pride shit at the PX like the last several years!!
At 5′ 11″ and 160lbs according to arrest report?
“Grieves was arrested by the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office on Dec. 16, 2016 and charged with simple assault, a misdemeanor. In the arresting warrants on file at the Onslow County District Courthouse and reviewed by The Daily News, Grieves is accused of “scratching the victim on the chest and punching the victim on the chest,” according to warrants.
The charges were subsequently dropped on Dec. 22, 2016 by the complainant, who is Grieves’ wife. The couple was married on Aug. 18, 2015. The couple has separated and filed for divorce on May 16, 2017, according to documents on file at the Onslow County District Courthouse Civil Division.”

She’s all yours, SARC
Well, looks like it is time to retire! Not going to get full Bird now!!
i’m thinking she was getting full bird almost every night at home….
That’s going to leave a mark in the checkbook.
Guess she judged that she would get relieved for coming clean. Now, since she tried to hide it, she gets relieved and will likely not retire as an O-5.
Wonder if she had a fight with her girlfriend?
Funny, that’s what people on the military.com keep asking and pissing some poster off.
That “…off-duty incident that was not properly reported.” might have been what killed it for her. She should have like 27 years in, depending if any were Reserve. Now she’ll have clearance issues. Probably the YZ lilly white clearance. Sucks.
Ugh. Here we go again.
According to LtCol Grieves’s biography linked below and her record cited above of having been the first female Helicopter Aircraft Commander for Marine One while she was assigned to HMX-1, followed by making the cut to be given command of the HMH-464 ‘Condors’ at MCAS New River, it appears that if she would have completed a successful command tour at HMH-464, LtCol Grieves would have been on the inside fast track to be selected for Top Level School (i.e. Naval War College, Army War College, etc.), followed by selection to Colonel/O-6.
Well, not anymore. Not after being relieved like this. From the scant info provided in the article linked above, it would appear that LtCol Grieves didn’t report the domestic incident and subsequent arrest in December 2016 to her chain of command in a proper and timely manner, which never plays out well, regardless of the circumstances. That is apparently why she was relieved of command.
Her Marine Corps career is effectively over now. She’ll never be promoted, and she probably won’t fly anymore, either. I have no idea what the domestic incident was about, nor do I know who else was involved. But looking at her timeline in her bio, she should have enough AD time to retire now as a LtCol.
Quite a bit was thrown away here over a domestic argument, and because of that I have to wonder how culpable the other participant was in the domestic argument and subsequent arrest.

Nice hi res photo there.
Just sayin.
awww yeahz…looks like her sweater puppies wanna come out and play
JUST LIKE many see JRM as “The Most Interesting man of TAH®™, I see you as “The #1 Horn-Dog of TAH®™”!
She’ll probably be put in charge of the MCAS New River CFC campaign until her retirement papers come through; it is what it is…
Damn shame- Her career was a rocket ship-
Don’t see much if any “Affirmative Action”-
She really was good at it.
I thought so too. Consistently at the top levels of whatever was afforded her. Definitely on her game for the long run. That one ‘aww shit’ can bite hard. Integrity is probably the one Leadership Principle that will wreck your shit with speed. Coming clean likely would have ended it anyway, but hiding it is so much worse. Hate to see all the accomplishments she had wiped out like that for something probably stupid, but she had an obligation to her chain of command, and her FSO to report it. Bummer…
A high speed, low drag mustang aviator. Too bad.
Welcome to O-5 retirement, Jenny. As a retired O-5 myself, it ain’t so bad…
After relieve of command because she failed to report an off duty incident, she is probably looking at a GOMOR or Article 15 for failure to follow an order or regulation (failure to report the incident) all before the legal issues with the arrest can be sorted out.
She’s going to have to fight to have her service as an O-5 considered “honorable and satisfactory” for retirement purposes and is quite possibly looking at a retired grade of O-4. That’s a loss of around 10K a year.
I’m trying to be optimistic for the old gal, but you’re likely correct
Back in the day her CO would have had a not so friendly chat, tell her to not let it happen again then buy the next round. Why waste a good officer over crap. I just don’t vision a Marine officer smacking someone for no good reason in a domestic situation. Hard to judge without all of the facts but she can earn a decent living as a civilian chopper pilot and find a new housemate.
^^+1
I wonder if Joe The Biden made any passes or lewd remarks.
Biteme Joe was probably panting in anticipation of the ride.
This is equality people. Domestic abuse charges and trying to conceal it from higher. She made her bed.
7 months later without trial is pretty absurd though.
Relief for cause doesn’t require any type of trial. Its an administrative action, not a legal one. As for the seven month gap between the incident and her getting relieved it was probably due to two things. First, the domestic abuse charges were bought by the civil authorities, and there is no requirement for the law to report them to an employer.
She willfully kept her command in the dark. Second, you can bet a dollar to a doughnut that her superiors did a full investigation of the circumstances before they posted her.
I would think that any type of punishment will be, or already has been meted out by the civilian court system.
The Corps will give her a negative fit rep to go with her relief and she will be pretty much told to put in her retirement package.
I don’t see her not being given Lt Col Retirement pay.
A similar case was that of Sgt Major Archie the PISC Sgt Major who was arrested for snatching the cover off a former Marine who was protesting at the gate.
Old Dog,
You are also making the assumption here that she has 3 years time in grade as an O-5 to retire. While she has 27 years of total service, she was commissioned in 98 (19 years ago), so she might be cutting it a little close. (Though the processing of any retirement might get her over the finish line.)
FWIW, I don’t think that NCOs go to a grade determination board.
She did not report being IHCA (In hands civil authority). If she had, she would have been relieved immediately anyway. I don’t feel sorry for her, she was probably a hot shot, anti-male, and a cunt.
Where did you come up with those assumptions? From what I have heard she was the real f%%^ing deal and very respected among enlisted and junior officers.
Joe Wallace. She was, when I knew her as Lieutenant Grieves, an excellent example of a Marine officer, she saw no gender, race,or creed. All she saw was the Marine, same as her.
I served with her at HMH-461 from 2001 till 2005.
I’m betting the domestic incident had to do with a same sex partner.
Also pretty sure that under the old regime it would have been a serious mistake to attempt to make such a shining star have her career cut short.
Too bad, so sad.
Yep … Xin Loi …
almost knocked her over at the local foodlion we had a good laugh after I apoligized
“All the hand wringing seems to be that she is a Lesbian. But, if you check her uniform. You’ll see the Corps doesn’t hand out medals for that.”
Army does…..http://www.medalsofamerica.com/Item–i-R841
That is why I **NEVER** wore that gottverdammt ribbon.
JSF
Would that be called the LGBTQ service ribbon? And might that be a rainbow colored?
WTF is wrong with this article.
“Lt. Col. Jennifer Grieves, 45, was relieved from command of Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 474” (from photo caption)
“Lt. Col. Jennifer Grieves, 45, was relieved from command of Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464” (from text of the article)
So which squadron was it?
“Grieves took command of HMH-464 in May 2015”
“Grieves, who assumed command of the squadron in May 2016”
So when did she assume command?
Assumed command of HMH-464 in May 2015 according to her official bio.
Do you know that, or are just just assuming it?
Yeah, I just pulled that out of a unicorn’s butt. Mick above posted her official bio – cheers.
It looks like the ‘May 2015’ date that is cited in her official biography for her assumption of command at HMH-464 is erroneous.
From her official bio:
‘[…]
LtCol Grieves served as the MAG-29 Operations Officer from April 2015 through September 2015 at which point she was assigned as the PSD CO, MAG-29 until she assumed command of HMH-464 in May 2015.
[…].’
According to that timeline while she was assigned to MAG-29, her assumption of command at HMH-464 would have to have been in May 2016.
A May 2016 assumption of command at HMH-464 is also cited in this article:
“Helicopter squadron commander relieved of duty due to ‘loss of trust and confidence’”
http://www.jdnews.com/news/20170607/helicopter-squadron-commander-relieved-of-duty-due-to-loss-of-trust-and-confidence
‘[…]
Grieves, who assumed command of the squadron in May 2016 has been replaced by Lt. Col. Troy Callahan, formerly of Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron One as its commander, according to the release.
[…].’
Nit Pickers. So needy.
butler:
– The squadron in question is the HMH-464 ‘Condors’; there is no such thing as ‘Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 474’ or ‘HMH-474’. That has to be a typo/error.
– Assumption of command at HMH-464 appears to be May 2016. (Please see my post below.)
