Broadwell & Thomas; The Marines’ naked-photo scandal shows military culture is still sexist
Paula Broadwell and Kate Hendricks Thomas take to the pages of the Washington Post to announce that the antics of some members of a Facebook page are proof that the military culture is still misogynist. I guess that Paula Broadwell is proof that female military officers are all out to bang general officers.
Broadwell had certainly encountered vulgarity and sexism, both subtle and overt, in an ongoing military career that goes all the way back to West Point.
So she lived up…or down…to expectations?
“Marines United” is a symptom of a gender hierarchy in the military and, sadly, the broader society that it draws from. But unlike other habits that the military efficiently drills out of its members, there’s no effort to do the same when it comes to sexist behavior. How is it that boot camp can alter everything about an individual except, apparently, their retrograde view of women?
You know what? There probably are people in the military who are sexist, but then so are their peers who are currently enrolled in college. Maybe the problem is not the military culture, but the overarching culture from where these youngsters come?
Rape and sexual assault is more common on college campuses than it is in military barracks. Sexual assault is a problem and it shouldn’t be encouraged, but I don’t see the Pentagon encouraging it. They’re paying more attention to the problem than America’s college campuses seem to be.
In my humble opinion, what Paula Broadwell has done encourages sexual assault and she should probably find another line of work.

What gets me is this fiction that’s been created that the military can be comprised of some sort of asexual, robot-like beings. People still refer to locker room humor. It’s sex talk, dirty jokes, with bad language thrown in for spice. And that’s what, high school athletes. Now, you take that and multiply by thousands in the military. Sure, the troops can be taught never to say what they are thinking and threatened with disciplinary action all day long if they do, but when the unit’s moerk isn’t around, guess what happens? Normalcy.

During at least a couple of past civilian jobs I’ve overheard a few conversations among Women that would make male locker room talk seem tame.
L&D nurses talking shop in the hall can be an eye-opener for the uninitiated.
But I’ve been in a few jobs where the talk, and behavior, of the physically-mature females was raunchier than anything I ever heard outside hip-hop/rap “music”.
The Sisters of Perpetual Victimhood are at it again. It seems to me women like Hendricks and Broadwell don’t actually want equality. What they want is to be in charge. It also seems apparent they think if they complain loudly enough and long enough that eventually they will get their way.
An argument can also be made that if the gender conflict is as serious as Hendricks and Broadwell present, maybe the blending of genders within the military is disruptive to the extent of being a fundamentally bad idea no amount of politically correct social engineering can overcome. At least if you want your troops to have a realistic chance of survival against a determined enemy.
If I recall correctly, Paula and her biography object (Petraeus) left secure material lying around in the open. I think she took some home, too, which she shouldn’t have done. She could have been fired on the spot for just that, but wasn’t and blames her lack of further progress on everyone else.
Paula’s just pissed off because she got caught banging the boss. She’s claiming victimhood when the reality is that her actions with Petraeus did more damage to women in the military than tailhook. Paula, put on your big girl panties (I believe they’re in Petraeus’ pocket) and get over it. Your credibility is slightly below zero.

The assumption is that the Military can produce whatever sort of thinking it desires through coercive conditioning. Thus any trace of unwanted behavior indicates a deliberate “coddling” of the unwanted non-progressive thinking and behavior. jut apply enough nagging and force and everyone in the military will be properly re-educated to progresssive norms.
Ponder the implications of that for a moment, the frightening totalitarian implications of who gets it next.

Sex-separate units might be the only way to include both sexes in the military with any real efficiency, and a minimum of unwanted distractions. Same-sex-interest segreagation might also be required. These options acknowledge objective reality, but absolutely will annoy those who are not reality-based in their thinking.
“Infinitely malleable” is generally how they express it, but yes, that is exactly the heart of their thinking and it is what inevitably brings about the totalitarian impulse on the left. You’d think they would have learned by now, but history means nothing to them. The “right people” weren’t in charge then and since they themselves are solely in possession of the revealed truth, they will be the ones to get it right “this time”. “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for” and all that.

There is nothing worse than putting fucking REMFs in charge of the warfighters. I was in RVN in 1971 when they rushed all the pentagon field grade REMFs over to get some purported “combat” experience on their lifetime REMF resumes before our involvement there was over. It wasn’t pretty. We had an Infantry Bn CSM who was a lifetime staff puke who claimed an RPG went in one door of the Huey he was riding in and out the other, on a cold LZ. Several years ago while I was still in the ANG, we had a door to door search of ALL areas, looking for posters and such that could be deemed offensive/racist/sexist. Personal clothing lockers were forced open – if you didn’t open it they would cut the locks off and open it to look, and all work areas were inspected as well. This is just the latest/greatest saga in that witch-hunt IMO. I will admit that there most likely exists the pictures, but at what point does someone just call bull and stop. You want these young troops to give 100% and be willing to die in combat, then you need to step back and decide what is worth the battle you are waging. Is it right? No. But, are you really going to change it, or are you simply going to run it further underground?
My Dad returned from serving during the Occupation of Germany in the early 50’s, and one of the many things be brought back with him was a mirror that had a negative inside of it. It looked like a regular mirror until held up to bright light, then you saw the nudie. This has been going on for many, many years, and while there might be some things that can be done to ease some of it, you aren’t going to stop it. More briefings don’t do crap for it, either!! As several others have stated so clearly – you don’t want your pictures out there, don’t let them be taken. Easy enough cure.
