Warrior Monk for Secretary of Defense

| December 2, 2016

James Mattis

You’ve been begging for this for years – James Mattis will be nominated for the Secretary of Defense according to Fox News;

At a rally in Cincinnati, Trump described Mattis as “one of our great, great generals” and added that a formal announcement would be made Monday, “so don’t tell anybody.”

“They say he’s the closest thing to Gen. George Patton that we have,” Trump told the crowd,”and it’s about time. It’s about time.”

A source close to Trump told Fox News that the president-elect’s decision to divulge the Mattis pick at the rally was a surprise. Transition sources had repeatedly described Mattis as the favorite for the defense secretary position, but stressed the choice had not been formally made.

From his Wiki;

During his service years, Mattis was considered to be an intellectual among the upper ranks, with his personal library numbering more than 7,000 volumes. Major General Robert H. Scales, Retired, PhD, described him as “….one of the most urbane and polished men I have known.” Reinforcing this intellectual persona was the fact he carried his own personal copy of the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius throughout his deployments.

The web is jam-packed with Mattis quotes like ‘There are some assholes in the world that just need to be shot’ and ‘There are some people who think you have to hate them in order to shoot them. I don’t think you do.’ He’s plain-spoken and doesn’t seem to care if anyone likes him or not. He would have made a good first sergeant.

He doesn’t make policy, but he will be a valuable asset for the troops and National Security in the President’s cabinet.

The word is that Ray Mabus has gone to his safe place until January.

OutFUCKINGstanding!

Feels good to be right.

All the best memes are coming true. It’s wonderful.

2/17 Air Cav

“The word is that Ray Mabus has gone to his safe place until January.” I hope he has enough binkies with him, the social- engineering-progressive-limp-wristed bastard.

Graybeard

The wailing of the enemy’s wussy-men is such sweet music.

Gravel

He will have to receive a waiver to be confirmed. I don’t know the specs of the law (and I’m to lazy to Google it), but the general hasn’t been out of the service long enough to take a cabinet post without Congress giving him the waiver.

MustangCryppie

Won’t be a problem. He’ll zip through the process.

11B-Mailclerk

There is an argument that the “seperation of powers” means that Congress cannot tell a President who he can or cannot nominate.

The counter-argument is that the President cannot tell Congress who they must confirm.

I believe that there is sufficient numbers to get Mattis confirmed. However, it is likely to be highly messy, as some folks on the opposing side are going to go ape-shit over this pick.

And just wait for the Supreme Court pick to hit the fan……

The Other Whitey

Hey, they were okay with it when Truman picked Marshall!

Deplorable B Woodman

And the DildoCrats under Dingy Harry dug their own graves on this, revoking filibuster and the super-majority vote for the simple majority vote.
Ahhhhh, sweet schadenfreude.

Roger in Republic

More like schadenboner.

BlueCord Dad

It started already. According to the New York Post, Senator Kristen Gillibrand(D-NY) will oppose any waiver. Apparently she has Presidential aspirations in 2020. Fuck her. Typical Demorat, placing her own agenda ahead of the nation’s. Again, Fuck Her. That is all

H1

I suspect she will be outstanding in her field.
Alone.

Gravel

Just to clarify … I love that he was picked.

I’m just noting that there is a law on the books stipulating that he has to be out of the service x amount of time before he’s supposed to be eligible for a cabinet posting. And that he will need the waiver.

Hondo

10 USC 113 is the operative Federal law. It specifies that any former officer cannot be appointed SECDEF until they’ve been off active duty for 7 years; 10 USC 132 specifies the same for the assistant SECDEF. If memory serves, the service secretaries have a similar, but somewhat shorter restriction – 5 years, I think.

Any of those waiting periods can be waived by (1) Congress passing a bill exempting a given individual from that requirement, and (2) the POTUS signing the bill into law.

Look for that to happen in late January 2017.

It will be nice to have someone who understands both warfare and the development of strategy running the Five-Sided Asylum once again. It will be doubly nice to have someone in that role who’s also a proven leader.

Fyrfighter

Report I read ( on Fox News I think) said that members in the House and Senate already have a draft of the proposed waiver ready… don’t know how accurate that is, but if so, it seems they’re planning to make it happen.
And thank heaven for it! You can already hear liberal heads exploding, and bad actors the world over crapping their pants!

The Other Whitey

Rumor has it Ray Mabus was seen curled up in the hall outside the Oval Office crying, “Make the bad man stop!”

Luddite4Change

My guess is that the announcement was delayed to ensure that both Ryan and McConnell were on boarded with having to process a waiver, and what that would look like.

Luddite4Change

I’d also have to think that McConnell got agreement from enough Dems that getting the waiver passed wouldn’t be an issue.

There are multiple places where the Democrats might put up a fight on folks needing confirmation, or just make it down right painful, but I don’t think this is one of them.

I think Gillibrand is using this as leverage for her crusade on removing investigation and prosecution of sexual assault from the Chain of Command.

68W58

He would have made a good first sergeant.

I mean, I think he will be a good SECDEF and all and that he will frighten all of the SJWs on Capitol Hill into hiding until he is safely ensconced across the river, but let’s not get crazy here.

HMCS(FMF) ret

“He’s plain-spoken and doesn’t seem to care if anyone likes him or not. He would have made a good first sergeant.”

He would have been welcomed to any CPO mess. The man tells it like it is and doesn’t give a flying fuck about PC.

HMC Ret

^^This^^

Jay

I wonder if the Honorable Mr. Mattis will bitch slap Mabus on his way out the door.

The Other Whitey

Or donkey-punch…

Hondo

I’m guessing Mabus will ensure he’s out of the Five Sided Asylum well before the new SECDEF is confirmed.

The Other Whitey

He’ll still need that special exemption from Congress, though I can’t imagine why they’d refuse.

So far, the only argument I’ve heard against him was Mark “I used to be Luke Skywalker” Hamill crying that Trump’s picking “the most despicable people on Earth” or some such shit. Of course, the only explanation offered by the guy who will never be as cool as Han Solo* for his claim was…staring at the camera and trying unsuccessfully to look intimidating. Uhh, okay, Hamill. No wonder your career peaked with one role that wasn’t even the most popular one in the movie. Hell, from what I’ve heard, his drug habits made Carrie Fisher look straight-laced by comparison.

And go figure, it doesn’t look like he’ll appear in the upcoming “Star Wars: Rogue One,” which looks pretty good (although if it turns out anything like the prequels or “The Force Awakens” I may finally lose it and go aloha snackbar on Disney/Lucasfilm, but I’m sure I’m not the only one).

* I’m aware that Harrison Ford is almost as liberal, but he’s *usually* had the decency not to be a complete self-righteous douche about it in public. Besides, Han Solo, Indiana Jones…he can pretty much do as he pleases.

Some Guy

Hey, you leave Mark Hamill out of this! Among those in the know, he’s lauded as lending the voice to the best incarnations of the Joker in the animated series of the early 90s and the excellent Batman video games of recent years.
[imgcomment image][/img]

11B-mailclerk

So…. his career peaked in what used to be called “direct to video”?

What next, the third series of Airwolf?

Common Sense CO

“one role that wasn’t even the most popular one in the movie”

Unless you were a 14-year-old girl. Not so much after he smashed his face in that car accident though.

However, just like most everything else, as I grew older, it was Han Solo for me. And almost every other role Harrison Ford took on. I love his dry sense of humor. I also love that he has used his pilot skills to rescue people. Badass!

As for General Mattis, how refreshing to have a genuinely honorable person of integrity in the Pentagon as well as someone who has actually studied the history of warfare, instead of poetry.

Trump, someone who I don’t trust as far as I can throw him, is also making great picks for the EPA. Things are looking up.

Ex-PH2

Han Solo was a stud.

Luke Skywalker was a whiny little bitch.

End of story.

Silentium Est Aureum

Don’t forget Rick Deckard. Blade Runner is probably his most underrated role.

I love it.

HOOAH!! and Semper Fi!

Ret_25x

I like the pick because he understands the difference between war-fighting and stylish SJW wailing.

However…

He is no George Marshall and we should all be aware of that fact. He has far more in common with Patton than Marshall and that alone is cause for some moderation of our excitement.

A Proud Infidel®™

I already have visions of him plowing B. Hussein 0bama & Company’s SJW bullshit away like a Caterpillar D9 at full throttle!

Hondo

Ralph Peters has a bit of a different take on the man, Ret_25x.

http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2016/12/01/ralph-peters-what-our-nation-would-get-with-gen-mattis-as-defense-secretary.html

Trump may appear to be a bit of a jerk on a personal level, but so far he appears to be surrounding himself with excellent subordinates who know their business through real-world experience.

Sound familiar?

David

“Sarah Palin as VA Secretary”

Adam

I don’t see how that could possibly be worse than anyone else who’s held that position. All she has to do is fire one bureaucrat or a judge from that internal court of theirs, and that would make her better than any VA secretary in recent memory.

It’s a low standard to surpass.

2/17 Air Cav

Yes, but my reason may differ from yours. It sounds familiar b/c many of us recognized two things about Trump. One, he doesn’t know shit about government and its niceties and, two, he would recruit the best people available who know what their field of expertise. That, at least in part, is happening. He can pick ’em, lay out his vision to them and say “Get ‘er done” and send my chief of staff a progress report every two weeks. If it’s not done in [insert # of months here] from today, tender your resignation the following day.

Fair enough, but would Marshall be the best man for the job today? With everything the nation currently faces at home and abroad, maybe we need a bit more Patton.

Conan; What is best in life?

I think Trump is wrong. I don’t believe he is the closet thing to Patton that we have.

I think he is the closest thing to Chesty Puller that we’ve seen in decades.

Could he be the Second Coming?

Bill M

Yes, I’d say Chesty Puller is the closest equivalent. I didn’t think they made men like that anymore, but he is a Marine after all. He can’t be installed in the Pentagon too soon to my way of thinking.

A Proud Infidel®™

Kinda like in Ronald Reagan’s autobiography where he talked about helping Jimmeh get the hostages released from Iran, he said something like “Look, do you want to deal with me? Al Haig is going to be my Secretary of State!” and I remember watching Reagan walking from his inauguration while hearing someone shout “THEY’RE FREE Mr. President, the hostages are free!”. Yeah, the left screeched that the world would end with Trump getting elected but since than relations with the Philippines (I remember reading the headline where Duterte called B. Hussein 0bama “The son of a whore”) and ditto with Russia, China and a host of others whose leaders knew right away eight years ago what a weak-spined narcissist 0bama was. HOW MANY other Heads of State DID B. Husein 0bama bow to?
