Supreme Court upholds Iran lawsuit
The US Supreme Court has upheld legislation that from Congress and president Obama which holds Iran financially responsible for terrorist acts dating back to the Beirut barracks bombing in 1983, according to USAToday;
The 6-2 ruling by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a victory for more than 1,000 victims and their surviving family members, who had sought access to about $1.75 billion in assets controlled by Iran in a U.S. bank.
The court determined that a law passed by Congress did not dictate to the courts how to handle the dispute, as the Iranian challengers had claimed. The justices also said the Constitution gives the president and Congress broad powers to conduct foreign policy.
“Exercise by Congress and the president of control over claims against foreign governments, as well as foreign government-owned property in the United States, is hardly a novelty,” Ginsburg said in summarizing her 24-page opinion from the bench.
The other day, John Kerry told the media that they haven’t given back the $155 billion of the Iranian’s money that the US froze decades ago, so I know where they can get the money to pay off Iran’s legal penalties.

$155 BILLION in Iranian funds are in IS banks? Are you shitting me???
It won’t cover much of the national debt, but it would be a good start!
In *US* banks. Goddamned smartphones…
You know we’re screwed when the auto-correct on our phones defaults to IS (Islamic State?) instead of US. …
$155 billion / ~1000 = somewhere around $150 million each for those injured and/or their survivors.
Sounds like a workable solution to me. I say we distribute $50M from those assets to each victim or their survivors – and hold the rest in a trust fund for future victims.
Except the victims won’t see half of it, if even that. What? You don’t truly believe this government is going to cheerfully hand over that kind of money to civilians, when there is so much ‘governmental need’ for it, do you? Sure. While you’re at it, please send me some of those Skittles, will ya? That’s how I’ll know you have a unicorn.
Oh, they’ll do it…if there’s enough outrage and a Presidential election year.
My goodness; I wonder if there’s a Presidential election coming up? ;o)
Now…time to get the word out and pressure our silk-suited, perfumed royalty on Capitol Hill to distribute that cash, keeping only what is needed to cover basic distribution expenses. I said BASIC…this is no time to go luxe.
I think they should use some of that money to give Social Security and VADC raises, since the basterds decided THEY could have a raise this year and no one else could, because -INFLATION! But what do I know?
I don’t have a unicorn or Skittles, but I did find Andes mint chips in the baking section at the grocery store.
And the pathetic clown in the white house and Kerry the fairy, just gave them what a billion and a half? This is all phony BULLSHYT!
The settlement amounts and who will get them has already been through the courts. Most of them are those WIA/KIA during the bombing of Oct 23, 1983. Some family members are also listed in the settlement.
Yes, the families will get monetary compensation and the fact that Iran fought this matter so hard for so long –and lost– no doubt gives the families some comfort. The Beirut bombing and the 1996 Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia are covered by the damages award.
“The Beirut bombing and the 1996 Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia are covered by the damages award.”
And some worthless poser will show up with his hand out, claiming to be at both.
They already have. I heard from a friend of a friend that heard from an anonymous source that maybe an unknown person has confidential information about a few un-named individuals that allegedly might be listed in the settlement who could possibly be potential posers.
You know how I hate to name names.
Iran calls US Supreme Court ruling on Marine barracks bombing a ‘theft’.
Forgive my lack of objectivity, I wish there was a hell for some people to rot in.
