Sheriff Mike Johnstone, opposed “shall issue” in Iowa, shoots self

Des Moines, Iowa Sheriff Mike Johnstone famously opposed his state becoming a “shall issue” concealed carry permit state four years ago. He claimed that it would be difficult to determine the metal health of applicants, that unqualified people would be able to get concealed weapon permits, according to the Washington Times;
Indeed, that is the essence of Sheriff Johnstone’s criticism of easy-carry laws — that people on the margins of accountability might become likelier to carry and that situations that might not have involved deadly firearms before will do so now. Before the new law, he said, he issued permits based on applicants demonstrable need. Now, hes required to issue permits to those who possess the qualifications.
“It’s putting weapons out on the street, and my deputies are very concerned about that,” he said.
“The idea of running across armed individuals on patrol stops and those kind of things are very concerning to them,” he said, noting that meetings have been held in his department to discuss handling the possible rise in armed citizens.
Apparently, he’s right, according to KBUR Johnstone failed to properly clear his weapon the other day and shot himself in the forepaw. He forgot that when he drops the magazine out, he should check the chamber, so he used his hand for a clearing barrel.
I guess we need to properly administer background checks on some law enforcement personnel, too. Especially the ones who think we’re as incompetent as him.

The narrative and spin will be, “even a highly trained professional makes mistakes with a gun. Guns in the hands of those without the level of training taken by Sheriff Johnstone shows there will be more injuries and deaths caused by guns. We must limit guns as in the hands of people, they are a danger to society “
Sounds more the gun is limiting his hand since his ND. What douchenozzle…
Is he a trained law enforcement professional, or a politician with a badge? Sheriff is an elected position, you’re not hired on your qualifications and merit. Hey Skippy, who does that sound like?
For some reason, the sound “dup” keeps coming to mind . . . .
We have a winner!
How about DERPA-DERPA-DOO!?
While what you say may be true, here in my county we are somewhat lucky in our sheriff having worked up through the ranks, gone the FBI Academy and served on many task forces that have actually reduced crime.
Not only that, he recently made a lot of people’s heads explode when he came out in favor of law abiding citizens being armed if they chose to be as a form of self protection and protection of others.
This sheriff also continued and expanded a firearm safety course offered by (but not required) by the Sheriff’s Department.
It very well could be that Sheriff Johnstone is exactly what you are talking about – more of a political advocate than a law enforcement one. In some ways, that would be even nicer because it would be a case of “don’t do as I do, do as I say” that is too typical of politicians.
Maybe he should come here and take the course offered by our sheriff’s department. Johnstone might learn something.
In 16 years as a firefighter-EMT I’ve responded to a total of two accidental shootings. One was a “highly-trained” cop who tried to draw his “safe-action” (whatever the hell that’s supposed to mean) with his booger hook on the bang switch and put a nice, neat .40-caliber hole through his foot.
TOW, years ago when I was a station LT, one of the patrol SGT’s came into my office to show me his new Sig P226, they had just changed over from a SW wheel gun. He sat down pulled his P226 jacked back the slide, out went one round, he released the mag and handed me his HOT auto, I cleared his 226 for him as the color drained out of him and he said I need more training, ya think? I saw him last week both of us now retired and he brought up that little story. In their police station and coke machine was shot and a shotgun round through the upper floor in the CPT’s office one night.
A large hole was blasted through the roof of our local firing range with a shotgun. Wanna guess who paid to have the roof fixed? Actually, it was local taxpayers, since we pay their salaries.
‘Nuff said.
As UI said in a FB post just because someone is a police officer does not mean they know how to handle firearms. They should send him back to the Academy!!!
PS: You can email him if you like, it is online.
I emailed him and asked him to consider endorsing my new product, the ultra-lightweight hand held invisible clearing barrel.
As a plus, after he retires he will still be allowed to carry concealed in every state while the rest of us leave our weapons at home because of a lack of reciprocity.
Yeah. Gotta love that “some animals are more equal than others” stuff when it comes to a right specifically guaranteed by the Constitution.
I’m sure the sheriff is a nice guy. I’m sure he means well. I’m also sure that he’s a control freak who has no understanding of people who want to be alive when the pohlease finally show up. If he’s that afraid of people with guns, he should move to Chicago… to the south side… Englewood.
Or move to the west side and remind all of his wonderful neighbors I’m sure he will have that he used to be a cop
Ha ha you little communist bitch!
Too bad you weren’t face palming yourself when you did this.
I’ll let Red Forman covey my thought about Barney Fife above.http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_-WQRXVX_HSg/TKsHY1XkhPI/AAAAAAAABHo/4RWqx1EfekE/s1600/70show_RedForman.jpg
This is especially amusing to me. My first CCW permit was from Iowa shortly after they became shall issue. Prior to that, no one in my county was going to get a permit unless they were good friends with the Sherriff. A lot of the LE departments in central eastern Iowa are notorious for having good ol’ boy systems. After Shall Issue passed, my brother quickly put himself though the NRA handgun instructors’ course so he could teach the required classes for people trying to get their permit. He had several run ins with one particular Sherriff (it wasn’t Johnstone) who was particularly resistant to the new change in the law. My brother had several of his students call him and complain that their Sherriff still wouldn’t give them the permit. My brother then had to call this Sherriff and basically chew him out for violating State law. This happened several times with this one particular Sherriff. I’m going to send this to him, he’ll think it’s funny.
NICE SHOOTIN’ Sheriff EINSTEIN, yeah really, SMOOTH MOVE, EX-LAX!! Sometimes stupidity IS painful. Meh, maybe he’s just possessed by a very retarded ghost?
Maintain a safe position of muzzle.
Drop or release magazine.
Clear any possible round by fully exercising slide machinism 3 times.
Visually inspect chamber and barrel from port to verify weapon is safe.
Never put your bugger hook on the bang switch, unless of course you want weapon to go BANG!
That is all.
Hey MCPO, I’d also add “…and if you see a gold-colored thingy in the chamber that looks like it has a button thingy in the middle, your gun WILL GO *BANG!* when you pull the trigger if you don’t get it out of there”, just sayin’.
Oh yeah, goldy shiny thingy too!
Unless one wants to field strip a Glock (a gun with a face only a mother could love).
Just give Barney here his one bullet, and make it easier for him to keep track.
This slow-mo video shot using Nikon’s Coolpix p900 camera should make you guys happy. Now, if you really want to see the bullets hit the cans, you need a serious high speed camera for the purpose. But this should give you all some sort of adrenalin rush.

Rooster Cogburn: Why, by God, girl, that’s a .50 caliber Deagle! You’re no bigger than a corn nubbin, what’re you doing with all this pistol?
Ex-Ph2: It belonged to my father, he carried it bravely in the war, and I intend to kill a cheese eating blob with it if the law fails to do so.
Rooster Cogburn: Well, this’ll sure get the job done if you can find a fence post to rest it on while you take aim.

MCPO, but Mike Johnstone told me these direcrions:
Point it at your hand to stop the bullet in case it goes off
Fully exercise the slide, ten drop the magazinext
Ensure the weapon is on fire
Pull the trigger
I don’t know, maybe you were right
When I lived in Colorado, I took a class to get a concealed carry permit. The instructor was Mike Hughes, a sergeant with the Denver PD.
During the class he was talking to us about holsters. He told a story about going to a range with two other cops. One of the cops holstered his pistol with his finger where it shouldn’t have been. There was this loud noise and that guy had a bloody groove down the side of his leg. They all thought that it was a not-serious injury but he needed to see a doctor and get it evaluated and cleaned up. So they bundle up their stuff and take him to the emergency room. The Doc takes one look and says, “This is a gun-shot wound! I have to call the cops!”. All three of them are holding up their hands, “Wait! Wait! We are the cops! See, here are our badges! Imagine how much grief we are going to get from this, can’t you cut us some slack?” I don’t recall how that part turned out but it was Mike’s way of telling us to be cautious around holsters and be careful when clearing a weapon.
Apparently Sheriff Johnstone was not paying attention during that part of the lecture.
I found out later that Mike and his wife Joy were both certified gun nuts who competed in tactical pistol and 3-gun and Mike was a Gunsite Rangemaster and helped SureFire develop combat flashlight tactics. Mike and Joy died in a plane crash in 2013 near Paulden AZ. I miss his friendship and his professionalism.
When I took the CCW class in the People’s Republic of Illinois, the video of the DEA agent shooting himself in the foot was required watching.

So am I the only asshole that read the headline with the happy expectation that said sheriff had shot himself in the melon?
Nope. I was quietly hoping the same thing.
I was holding out for the balls.
He could sing soprano in the church choir afterwards.
Damn I’m mean.
I’m going to Hell, too. I’ll save you a seat.
Note to the Sheriff Johnstone: We are not all as dumb as you are so quit projecting. Really, we aren’t. Most (as in very nearly 100% of us) have never shot ourselves or anyone else with a firearm in our possession, under our control, or even one simply within our reach. Even those few of us who have shot someone did so intentionally, thoughtfully, and within legal limits.
Got it? We are not the ones who should be disarmed. Criminals and folks like you, Sheriff Johnstone, are the problem not the rest of us who only wish to have another tool in our toolbox if/when it becomes necessary to protect ourselves or those around us.
“metal illness”?
…and here I was all thinkin’ some sheriff had offed himself…
I will say, coming from a law enforcement family, that most departments don’t have the budget to do proper, continuous training. Cities, counties and states don’t want to cough up the hourly pay for the officers, the ammo cost or the time for the range and range instructors.
That being said though, it is up to the officer to take it upon themselves to be proficient and competent with the equipment they use and be aware of the dangers and capabilities of that equipment.
Most people who get their CCW (note I do not say CIVILIANS since police are civilians as well) do spend much more time training than many officers do. I remember being at the range and the High School Police (yes, they have their own department) were there doing some shooting and dear God I hope they never have to use their guns in a real life situation.
One officer was using the ‘spray and pray’ method while the rest seemed to be doing the ‘close your eyes and point it that way’ method.
note I do not say CIVILIANS since police are civilians as well
Thank you. It irritates me to no end when cops use the term “civilians” to describe people that aren’t in their group.
Only One Professional Enough indeed!
How much is used ammo worth at recycling?
Do you think the sherf got his money’s worth?
