Stolen Valor vigilantism
Michael Delfin’s wife contacted us the other day about him. He was attacked by a pair of Air Force guys who thought that he was lying about his military service. The story about it comes out of Sacramento, California;
“So, I asked him to read my ID, and he was like nahh stolen valor, stolen valor; this guy’s a fake,” he said.
Since he’s no longer active duty, Michael’s ID is different. But he was accused of lying about serving—stolen valor.
“He’s ignorant. He needs to learn how to read an ID, plain and simple,” he said. “When a vet tells you he’s a vet and he’s obviously wearing a fallen brothers bracelet-doesn’t even recognize that.”
The two Air Force fellows attacked the former Marine in the parking lot outside of the club. They broke his leg and possibly his jaw.
I don’t think anyone in this crowd at TAH would engage in that type of vigilantism, because everyone knows we don’t condone that behavior. We get the records of folks first before we call them out, and physical violence, no matter how tempting, is always frowned upon. I don’t know what was going through the minds of those two Air Force fellows, if anything was working up there at all.

I saw a post on Stolen Valor that a fellow veteran has contacted the OSI at Travis AFB and they are also involved (allegedly) in this investigation.
They as well as local law enforcement should be. I know how it works in the military, so not sure how the Air Force will deal with it, but they committed multiple felonies and a court martial would most likely be the starting point were they Marines.

I believe he was referring only to the two assholes who committed the assault. If the story is true, they deserve the names, and more.
It seems to me that a beating severe enough to break someone’s leg is out of all proportion to the suspected offense. I think I want to hear more about this story before I comment on it.
This is not a good thing. There’s no sense in physical confrontations like this.

I don’t know about Califruitsnnutz, it may be a misdemeanor there, or a civil infraction. In Michigan, it would be Assault with Intent To Do Great Bodily Harm Less Than Murder. Punishment is 10 years in prison, max, and a $5000 fine.

A couple of things about this. Anyone who tries to associate what one drunken jerk who, as Delfin says, was looking for a fight with the Stolen Valor that is the stuff of this blog and the subject of federal and state statutes is grossly mistaken. This wasn’t about a legitimate stolen valor concern at all and a local TV story calling it that doesn’t make it that. It was about a drunk or two looking for and causing trouble. I hope the police are actively seeking the SOBs who attacked this Veteran, but this story has nothing whatsoever to do with valor thieves and those who spotlight their lies, embellishments, and false claims. I guess I resent that the word vigilantism is used here as it is. That’s not us and I see no need to say so just because some asshole is banging pots and pans again.

I’m a month out and I still have swelling and minor pain, even with Motrin and physical therapy.
Just taking a knee-smashing fall on the ice at practice can keep you off the rink for 3 weeks and take months for the nerves to grow back, IF they ever do. And then you have to sit with an icepack on your freakin’ knee for a week minimum to keep the thing from swelling up.

I hate to see this shit but Dave H made a comment a week ago about it saying it will be a matter of time before some ass makes a mistake in identity here. We do not have the full story like what happen inside the bar. That is not to say the guy’s that jumped him are in the wrong period. I’d say a bar is the last place you want to call out someone for stolen valor. If you did, probably more than half the men in there would be guilty of it. Not to leave out the ladies, but I’d say they have some as well, just not as much.

I don’t really like bars either. I avoided bars around Bragg when I was there because they were always full of dudes looking to hook up with any woman who had a pulse and competition was high.
To add my own take on what Hayabusa said upthread, nothing good happens in a bar after 8pm. That’s just the nature of bars and most people who hang out in bars.
Not saying anything’s “off” here, but I would be interested in knowing what kind of ID this guy showed his attackers. I’m pretty sure that since at least 2003 RC personnel have been issued CAC cards. And it’s virtually identical to an active CAC – you have to look closely to spot the difference.
Would his ID look more like a retiree ID, if he was medically retired? Article was kind of vague as to why he had a military ID
I have the same ID card that any retired service member would have.. it’s blue background.
I think IRR have a Red background on theirs. I was a NG and for some odd reason they IRR’d me even though I’m 100 percent Army and VA

Negative. The red “oldstyle” ID (similar to the blue retired military ID) is now used as the “Grey Area” Reserve Retiree ID card. That happened at the same time issuance of CACs to RC personnel began (or very shortly afterwards).
A retired reservist gets the blue ID at age 60.

Yes I retired in 2007 and have a Red Card and it says “RETIRED” on it. So in a few years (8), I’ll get a check and a new Blue ID. Coolness

Hondo, I don’t think he is RC I think he is out that means he is probably IRR and they do not get an ID but he has his VA ID that is what he showed in the news Vid. I will say I know the Navy and Marine Corps do not get attached to RC and I believe the Army does that,now not sure.

A few years ago, maybe around 2008? They stopped putting “reserve” or “active” on military CACs (for the Army at least).
So if you look at an Army CAC now, you can’t tell anything other than the person is in the Army.
If you had shown me a VA ID card for a vet 2 years ago, I wouldn’t have a clue if it were real or fake. Though I think that’s irrelevant to these two hosehounds who wanted to get in a fight.
I’m with you MSG, I have two ID’S my green retire ID and a VA card did not know what they looked like and if I saw one would say it was fake. GA VA makes you get one don’t know why they just do. The congress just past something they attached to the DOD bill and it was they will issue ID’s to Vet’s when they get out. They want to eventually use this as the DD 214 instead of paper because you can fake paper well I think you can fake ID’s also.
Retired ID’s are Blue for all branches.
Mine look’s real green to me, I must be cooler blind.. My bad it look’s real close to the old green cards just checked again it’s bluish. My bad just look’s bluish green but I’ll go with that.

On a serious note: I am a Veteran, I have no ID whatsoever. Most Veterans don’t. Most veterans dont use the VA. Most veterans served their enlistment and go on with their lives.
Ask me for a Veteran ID in a bar and I will tell you to check with your mother, she vetted me.

Just got my first Veteran ID. It’s my driver’s license with a teeny tiny image of the country that is filled in to look like Old Glory. The image has the word Veteran” beneath it, in a font that I guess is a -3. Hey, it was free.
Same here. All I have to show is a VFW card and a couple of membership cards to vet organizations (11 ACR & 14 FA). Don’t need VA services but I plan on getting a VA card soon just in case I ever need something “official”.
NH now issues Driver’s Licenses with ‘Veteran’ marked in one corner if you provide the proper paperwork when you apply for your license. I ran into a situation earlier this week where a military museum was now free for all active/retired/and veterans, with the caveat “With proper ID.” Normally I would show my VFW or Sub Vets life membership cards, but 50% of the time those are not acceptable (they are looking for official government retired blue card IDs). This was the first time I used my new license as proof of veteran’s status and it was accepted with no question.

I don’t know Chief Shipley. We exchanged a couple of emails over a small matter, never mind. I have watched some of his videos and was entertained and enlightened. In my opinion, the chief doesn’t need to prove anything to anybody. Why dignify the accusation by replying to it? In order to evaluate the accusation we can understand everything we need to know by looking at the person who made it. Sort of like this, “interesting? True? Oh, that jackass. Never mind.”
FWIW, On March 16, 1976 the guy doing my outprocessing said, “officially you owe us three days on IRR but since it will take you three days to get home, we figured – what the heck – so, you’re welcome.” I handed over my ID, said “Thanks” and started life as a civilian. So I don’t have a card. I suspect that there are a couple million more like me. You guys who did the full tour have my respect. Even Hardin.

Well he did have his VA card , which the only one that shows a guys a vet who enrolled in the VA…other than that no other card ID shows a guys a vet … Here in California next year drivers licenses and IDs will have VETERAN on them. More to this story I am sure.

Numbnuts somehow got a picture of Mrs Shipley wearing Don’s uniform from their site. She was probably doing it as a part of them outing frauds. In other words, Diane Shipley was NOT running around claiming to be a SEAL and it would be obvious to anyone who had seen the picture in its actual context that she wasn’t.
You have to remember, Bernath is the same toe-rag that took a picture of Mark Seavey dressed in a reenacting uniform and accused him of pretending to be a general.
Everything considered, I pretty much have to go along with D. Hardin’s thoughts. If I understood the story correctly, the Devil Dog mentioned something about the two Air Force dudes and their uniforms. Going to ANY bar and bringing up the subject of ANYTHING military is looking for trouble. Much as I hate to say it, the Marine should never have opened his mouth to begin with. We all know how the different branches of service enjoyed ragging on one another. Most all of us were guilty of that back in the day. Liquor and stupidity are sisters, don’t we know? Twins at that. Regrettable that the Marine was hurt, but at least he can say it was done by two thugs. Stay out of bars; if you need to drink, stay at home and piss off the parrot. When out in public, a sober and alert mind (especially when you have a CWP ) will more often than not prevent you from ever getting taken by surprise and getting your ass kicked. Caution never leads to being mugged. Your face will always be the first sign of weakness for the instant thugs. The confidence of a CWP will always be represented by the smile that says, “Does not play well with others”.

Dave, you and I might be two of few who see things the way we do. We know how mouthy the Green Machine tended to make us, especially up to probably the first five years after discharge. Likewise, we know that advertising by mouth in a bar that you are or have been a Marine is most always considered by other drunks a challenge to go after with as much force as it takes. The absolute NEED to mention prior service in the USMC while around people you don’t know is mostly received as a threat with bragging rights, which just HAVE to be challenged by a belly full of liquor and a mind that can’t reason with a person bragging. My guess is that neither one of us go into bars alone and want to tell strangers early on what bad-asses we were or still are. Finally, I hope the dude learned a valuable lesson. By that I mean it could have been a LOT worse.
The GoFundMe goal established by Mrs. Delfin is $4,000. She explains that he is out of work b/c of the attack, fight, or whatever it was. I guess his job—whatever it is—doesn’t provide sick leave or other types of paid leave and that, if that’s true, his employer is callous and uncaring not to keep him in paid status while he is recovering. So, Mrs. Delfin, if you are reading this, consider explaining the situation a little better and you just might receive more donations.
On the outside chance that Mrs, Delfin visits, your state may have a crime victims’ fund that may or may not help your situation. It’s worth asking.
Has anyone thought of crowdsourcing to find these two assholes? One of the articles has a lot of tidbits on these guys – here is a quote from Mrs. Delfin:
“I need help ID’ing these guys. We know the one is stationed at Travis AFB. He has a tattoo of a microphone and music notes on his forearm and on his right shoulder something that looked like a Grimm reaper. He is about 6’5″ dark hair. Either from Oregon or an Oregon Ducks fan judging by his clothes. The other guy worked for a painting company in the area. Want to say is was CS painting. No tattoos that I could see. They both like singing karaoke.”
