National POW/MIA Recognition Day, 2015

| September 18, 2015

The President has designated today as National POW/MIA Recognition Day.

As a grateful Nation, we owe it to all who put on the uniform of the United States to remain unwavering in our promise to them. With hearts full of love, families carry on with an unfillable void, and we stand beside them — one and all — acutely aware of the cost at which our liberty comes. Today and every day, let us renew our pledge to never stop working to bring home the ones they love to the land they risked everything to protect.

On September 18, 2015, the stark black and white banner symbolizing America’s Missing in Action and Prisoners of War will be flown over the White House; the United States Capitol; the Departments of State, Defense, and Veterans Affairs; the Selective Service System Headquarters; the World War II Memorial; the Korean War Veterans Memorial; the Vietnam Veterans Memorial; United States post offices; national cemeteries; and other locations across our country. We raise this flag as a solemn reminder of our obligation to always remember the sacrifices made to defend our Nation.

According to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) there are still more than 83,000 Americans missing;

“The President has designated…” Wow! The President did this? What a guy, a true American patriot. Yeah, well, before any of us reconsider the attitude of that POS in the White House, know that National POW/MIA Recognition Day is the third Friday in September BY LAW and that the places named where the flag will POW/MIA flag will fly today–including the White House–are likewise mandated and specified BY LAW. At least oBaMa is following the law–this time.

A Proud Infidel®™

I’m amazed that he remembered to do so before running off to play golf!

2/17 Air Cav

He didn’t. He has peoples who do these things.

You mean prances off, with the birddog!

The Other Whitey

The Glorious Leader claims credit for something that’s been going on since he was but an itch in his communist womanizing absent-father’s balls? Go figure.

President singing a proclamation on this day goes back awhile to other presidents . It’s just away for him to say a few words about it to the country.

Hondo

It goes back to 1995, actually. Prior to then, Congress passed a resolution or law annually proclaiming the day. Congress quit doing that kind of thing in 1995, leaving the proclamation of the day to the POTUS.

Well there you go.

2/17 Air Cav

There you go what? You had a point?

C. Long

The point being Presidents have done this for awhile. As Hondo pointed out, the last 20 years.

2/17 Air Cav

Okay, that’s fine. I just want to ensure that oBaMa receives no credit for what the law accomplished in setting forth, as it does, when this recognition day is fixed and where the POW/MIA shall be flown. My guess is that he doesn’t know that this is National POW/MIA Recognition Day.

Hondo

Actually, 2/17 Air Cav, the best I can tell the US Code doesn’t specify a particular day or date for National POW/MIA Recognition Day. 36 USC 902 designates the day as one that the POW/MIA Flag will be flown at specific locations; however, it does not designate a particular day for the observance of National POW/MIA Remembrance Day.

By custom, the observance has been on the 3rd Friday in September for at least the last 2 decades. However, it does not seem to be so specified in Federal law – at least, not anywhere I’ve been able to find so far. It thus would appear to require an annual Presidential Proclamation.

2/17 Air Cav

You are correct. The days that the POW/MIA flag is to be flown–and where–are specified in the US Code and one of them is POW/MIA Day. However, the 3rd Friday is custom, not law. That’s what I get for not checking the originating source before writing– a mortal sin. Seriously, thanks for the correction.

Separately, and in the interest of fairness, here are some other proclamations oBaMa has signed: Captive Nations Week, LGBT Pride Month, Workers Memorial Day (not to be confused with Memorial Day), Cesar Chavez Day, National Hispanic Heritage Month, America Recycles Day, National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, International Day of the Girl, Establishment of the Cesar E. Chavez National Monument, National Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week, and King Kamehameha Day.

National Day of Prayer, Suicide Prevention, ovarian cancer, I think he re-named a mountain recently oh and armed forces day.

Just a few more, you know to be fair.

True but stock. I will say this about that POS oBaMa. He did sent a wreath to memorialize CONFEDERATE WAR DEAD on multiple years during his two terms.

C. Long

He’s not the only one whose done that. I think the tradition stopped then started up again at some point in the last few admins.

2/17 Air Cav

No, he’s not the only one. I think it’s great that America’s first partially Black president honors the Confederate War Dead. The knuckleheads who think the Civil War, it’s flags, and its monuments, were only about slavery (=/-) can learn a thing from that. Hey, that’s the first positive thing I ever wrote about that POS in the WH! It took over seven years but it happened. I have to go rest now.

Friend

I’m not impressed! IT SHOULD OF BEEN NAMED AFTER KOREAN, WW2, VIETNAMS, BROTHERS’AND FATHERS WHO DIDN’T COME HOME…How many Presidents failed to HONOR DOES STILL NOT BURIED IN AMERICAN SOIL!
How about the Military doing something right now and and start searching in all the countries. We don’t need the money for NASA OR WALKING ON THE MOON. PUT THAT MONEY TO FIND MISSING SOLDIERS.

Friend

THOSE…

THAT FLAG SHOULD FLY UNDER OUR FLAG ON THE WHITE HOUSE AND EVERY MILITARY BRANCH..
