Shootings in Chattanooga

| July 16, 2015

Chattanooga

Various news sources are reporting that someone took shots from a Ford Mustang, using a long gun, on a recruiting station and a Navy Reserve Center (about 7 miles apart) in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Two (or three, or four) Marines have been injured along with a police officer. There are reports that the gunman is dead. From WRCBTV in Chattanooga;

The shooting incident began on the U.S. Naval Recruiting on Lee Highway in Chattanooga ended at the U.S. Naval Reserve Center on Amincola Highway Thursday morning about 11am.

A Chattanooga police officer was shot, according to Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke. Both Berke and CPD Cheif Fred Fletcher visited the shooting scene and went to the hospital to check on the officer.

In their live report, CBS News says that there is no longer a threat as the lone gunman has been killed.

Notice the “no guns allowed” sign by the bullet holes. So, he didn’t break the law by taking his guns inside.

Called a friend in Chattanooga when this first broke. She is a nurse at Erlanger hospital and has been hearing all sorts of rumors about shootings nearby. There was a shooting of an AGR soldier in Nashville last year sometime which resulted in stricter security at TNARNG facilities. They seem like a pain in the ass at times, but today you can see the value.

Sparks

Praying for all those innocent shooting victims. Also hoping the shooter was DRT from “return fire” and not the cowardly, self inflicted GSW.

AZtoVA

Unfortunately, our military are unarmed and unable to return fire. Hopefully a CC civilian was in the area to do so.

LIRight

@AZtoVA

“Unfortunately, our military are unarmed and unable to return fire. Hopefully a CC civilian was in the area to do so.”

What you wrote is so profound and at the same time disturbing mostly caused by the pervasive political correctness demanded by those assholes on the left.

Who’d a ever thought that we’d “hope” for a CC civilian to save a couple of Marines.

The “(not permitted)carrying firearms policy” for the military sucks!

Frickin disgusting.

Skippy

I hope all will be fine,
You gotta love those gun free zones

OWB

“Big, black gun.”

And according to Shep, the shooter was neutralized after he ran into the woods. (Interesting choice of words, which he repeated several times.)

And now it was a “military style assault rifle.” Ya know, because it had the capacity to rapid fire.

Yep. And the reporter opines that this could have been a disgruntled military member. Gee, thanks, bub. Guess you felt no need to speculate that it might have been a disgruntled food cart owner, or school teacher, or, or, or.

Flagwaver

The report I heard was that it was a full-auto AK-47. He emptied a magazine at one location and a second at the other. He was shot by a LEO.

SFC D

Now there will be a push to outlaw full auto AK’s, if in fact that’s what it was. Who cares about facts anyway? /heavy sarc/

desert

the pictures of the suspects show they are obama’s boys and probably egged on by sharpton and jackson and ferry khan!

MCPO NYC USN Ret.

The Naval Facility is: Naval Operational Support Center (NOSC) Chattanooga, TN.

Formerly known as Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center (N&MCRC).

It is essentially combined USN and USMC Reverse Center.

The press is jacking up the proper description and name of facility.

Grimmy

I think the current media industry rules forbid employment to anyone actually concerned with facts.

OldSoldier54

So it seems …

Old Trooper

Workplace violence? Disgruntled former employee/coworker/lover/boyfriend? Upset Confederate flag supporter?

Climb to Glory

I just saw that. Shooter just confirmed dead via Fox News. This sucks. Thoughts a prayers to the families involved. Sad day.

MCPO NYC USN Ret.

Reports of critical need for various blood types. That is not good.

Ex-PH2

Since the press currently feeds itself on rumor and speculation, we won’t get the real facts or the reason behind this bad act until some of the noise has died down.

I want facts, not speculation by the LSM.

My sympathies to the families of those who were the targets of this carnage.

Pinto Nag

Prayers out for the Marines and their families.

Hondo

FWIW: Reuters is currently reporting 4 total killed, including the shooter. Other reports say 2 wounded.

Probably be a bit longer before we have an accurate report from anyone, or enough information to figure out the why.

Flagwaver

I’m getting 4 Marines, deceased. The shooter DRT by LEO. One critical and one not-as-critical but both at the hospital. One officer injured, but not life threatening.

MCPO NYC USN Ret.

DoD and USMC will not confirm as per FOX News.

QM1

Prayers for my fellow shipmates and devil dogs in Chattanooga.

MCPO NYC USN Ret.

Gov of TN refers to killings!

OWB

The most disgusting part of all the media speculation is arguing about whether it is or is not terrorism. The act defines it as terrorism to my old school mind which still remembers how we used to define such things. It doesn’t matter if the shooter was in the KKK, a black panther, or a drug cartel foot soldier.

It was an act of terrorism no matter who the shooter was or if he represented others in his shooting spree. Also apparently murder ending in the elimination of the threat. DRT before he could cause more death and destruction.

Yeah, this is my angry face. Evil people allowed to roam free make me very angry at those who condone it and too often encourage it.

Old Trooper

You just don’t have the nuance, bud.

OWB

Oh, I got plenty of nuance. 😉 (Sounds like a show tune, doesn’t it?)

What the lefties fail to acknowledge is that we get the nuance. We simply reject most of theirs.

Hondo

Personally I think it’s more a case of, “What they mistake for ‘nuance’ we recognize as naive idiocy.” But maybe that’s just me.

OWB

Or willful ignorance?

valerie

My daddy would call it bullish*t.

SFC D

Mine too

Poetrooper

It’s ol’ Poe’s strongly held belief that John Kerry long ago made nuance a
four-letter word.

OldSoldier54

Me,too.

Ex-PH2

A multi-service recruiting post in a shopping mall was the target. If other stores had been targeted, too, that would make a difference, but they weren’t.

So, yeah, I’d say this is a terrorist act by a lone slimeball.

Ex-PH2

I’ll amend what I said about terrorism. The USDA said ‘don’t get caught up in labels’. The FBI, et al., will categorize this act when they’re done investigating.

Does not mean we can’t speculate.

Pinto Nag

“Yeah, this is my angry face. Evil people allowed to roam free make me very angry at those who condone it and too often encourage it.”

I feel the same way, 110%. It doesn’t matter what they are or why they did this. There are NO consequences anymore for actions like this, except jail. Big damn deal. They’re still breathing, still eating and sleeping, still able to go out among the living, even if it is behind a fence. Their victims don’t get that choice, NOT EVER AGAIN. And nobody that has the power to make this kind of action punishable as a capital crime gives a single crap about any of the victims. They WANT that body count so they can use it to further their gun and political agendas, and that’s it. You notice that none, NOT ONE, of these shooters has gone after a politician. They KNOW which side their bread is buttered on. If they were targeting politicians the way they are targeting military and police, you’d see a whole different ballgame, in one hell of a hurry.

Jarhead

Pinto Nag….We might disagree for one reason. Putting someone to “sleep” with an IV is such an easy and cowardice way to end their life of agony. Now if you wanted them to pay for what they had done, consider this; living in a cage every day of your remaining life HAS to be depressing and extremely hopeless, if your sentence is “without the possibility” of parole. No thanks, I want no part of it. Given the choice of my “druthers”, At my first opportunity I would continually get things in order and finish my life as quickly as possible.

Roger in Republic

If you were born in Kuwait, and your name is Mohammed, you are most definitely a terrorist. Case closed.

Flagwaver

Don’t forget he was armed with a full-auto AK-47 according to most of the reports. Those aren’t exactly something you can buy at the local gun store.

AW1Ed

I take any firearm description by the media with a shot glass of salt. A slim chance of a smuggled full auto AK, but 99% most likely a garden variety semi-auto.

SFC D

If the lamestream media says its full auto, then by God it’s full auto!

Flagwaver

Actually, it was one of the recruiters. The Marine recruiter who said there was a single shot through the window, followed by 30 or 40 in about 5 seconds.

It was the same interview where he said that he “sheltered in place” like a good little victim, as per SOP.

MCPO NYC USN Ret.

ABC is reporting 4 dead including shooter, plus 3 wounded. Report was as of 4 or 5 min ago.

4 dead plus the shooter per Yahoo news

Hondo

Looks like that’s correct. ABC and others now reporting 4 plus shooter killed. Some discrepancies still in how many wounded.

Ex-344MP

Huh…..who would have thought the media would be mixed up.

My numbers came from the mayors speech on local NBC station.

Flagwaver

Yay, fog of war. Even in our internet age, it still requires actual eyeballs to confirm.

“But not a terrorist.”

AZtoVA

Sorry, my keyboard does not have a sarcasm font or I would have definitely used it there.

Facts are in short supply as news gatherers race to report whatever they can, however ridiculous. The rat bastards had damn better stay away from the Marines’ families whose pain will grow as their shock and disbelief wanes. May God comfort them all.

But, did he have a confederate flag? The speculation is the DMF was a “sleeper”, because IS put out a criptic tweet approx. 15 minutes prior to the start of it. But, I’m sure that’s just coincidence and that he was just a lone actor that isn’t tied to IS.

Prayers out to the families of those who were murdered as well as the wounded. Those inside our Military Facilities are disarmed as can be, thus making them nice targets for cowards like the shooter who is now roasting in hell! I remember reading one of Trump’s statements saying that he was all in favor of letting Personnel carry on and in facilities, that doesn’t sound like a bad idea right now.

Thats about the only thing he has said that wasn’t based on crazy

Ex-PH2

I was truly hoping this was just a jackass with a hair up his butt about military and the Confederacy, or something like that. If this is ISIS-related, as someone suggested, then it is pure cowardice.

David

if it ISN’T it’s still pure cowardice. There is no circumstance short of a declared war in which it isn’t.

Ex-Ph2

Evening news says authorities are now treating it as an act of domestic terrorism.

Yes, it is pure cowardice, but if that slacker in the White House tries to modify the ‘labeling’ of it, that is simply more than I can take.

If I am repeating others here, pardon me. Watching Fox News the last hour, despite retired FBI agents and other insiders speaking of this being an out and out terrorist attack, the FBI has already said “He acted alone”. Another lone wolf attack I guess. All I can say at this time is the man who can’t even call ISIS the murdering terrorists they are is the same man who has his hand up the FBI spokespersons’ asses like a puppet. We don’t want to fly off the handle and actually say, “We’ve opened the borders, we’ve already admitted to terrorists being watched in all 50 states but this Kuwaiti native who did this, is just a lone wolf. Nothing to see here folks…just move along”. Sounds like many others recently. This kind of reporting, stemming from what the Administration decides to say and release just bugs the shit out of me. Time to call a spade a spade.

Climb to Glory

So much for that theory that Mom Jeans and wold class dolt Marie Barf believe that these guys are just a bunch of uneducated rubes in need of a job. The savage had a degree in engineering. Fucking piece of shit.

Flagwaver

I just saw the tweet that people are referring to. The account was suspended in the last five minutes, though. It does include #Chattanooga and the timestamp places it about 15 minutes before the attack.

Fuck domestic terrorism. It was a fucking sleeper cell that was just activated.

2/17 Air Cav

The sickening aspect of this is that the repeated warnings and alerts to stateside service members and their families is as good as advising people to call 9-1-1 as someone climbs through the window in the dead of night. I would very much like to know how many people in uniform are to be murdered with no ability to defend themselves before arms are issued.

Common Sense

This is disturbing…

“The two entrances to the fenced facility have unmanned gates and concrete barriers that require approaching cars to slow down to drive around them.”

UNMANNED?? After all the recent threats? Whose bright idea was that?

2/17 Air Cav

Yeah, I saw that earlier. This is what happens when hard decisions must be made between dedicating time and effort to allowing our stateside military to protect itself or using that time and effort to push for transgenders to enlist. This shit is just too sick. It’s unreal.

Sparks

God please rest these 4 Marines and Police Officer. God please bless their families now with Your comfort and peace in their grief and mourning.

Arby

Time for Congress to put pressure on the DOD to award Purple Hearts immediately and not years after the fact like in the Ft Hood and Arkansas incidents. Work place violence my ass.

Matt256

Wait! We need to wait to see what type of weapon was used. If it was an “assault weapon” with high capacity “clips”, then that is the reason for this attack. Headlines, “Assault weapon used in work place shooting” (according to this administration).

Semper Fi Marines…to bad you couldn’t defend yourselves. RIP.

2/17 Air Cav

Purple Hearts? How about certain idiots in the White House and the Pentagon be charged with malfeasance instead. I can’t see putting a sidearm on every cook, clerk, and transgender acclimation specialist in the military but, dammit, how many more will have to die (or is there no limit?) before appropriate security steps for self defense are taken? Marines taking fire from and being murdered by a terrorist and they are helpless? Will the nightly news begin telling us how many troops die each day at various military installations and offices across this country? Will nothing meaningful be done now or must we await the coordinated attacks on post daycare centers and PXs?

Powerpoint Ranger

The pros and cons of individual carry on a proper miltary installation with fences and MPs/contract security is one thing, but this is something else entirely.

Both attacks today occurred at places that have no designated Force Protection personnel. This shit will keep happening at those kinds of facilities if they don’t make some kind of force protection allowances for their personnel. There’s no excuse for not doing so at this point.

Flagwaver

Even with MPs, it’s the same story. When seconds count, the police are minutes away.

First, you have to call 911… before the person fires the first shot.

Second, the MP/police have to be on the scene immediately… before the person fires the first shot.

Third, the MP/police have to assess the situation and decide if lethal force is warranted, draw their weapon, and fire… before the suspect fires the first shot.

Cops don’t prevent crimes, they respond to them. Will you trust your life to their response time?

John S.

Why not give the recruiters a secondary MOS such as the one for MP, so that they can carry?

Powerpoint Ranger

You aren’t telling me anything I don’t know, because I spent five years in LE before I served on active duty.

I agree with everything you’re saying here, and I want as many people as possible to be armed and capable of protecting themselves on every base. I was just pointing out how especially asinine the current policy is for people who aren’t at a duty station with any kind of security measures, and how it puts them in an impossible position.

TONY180A

Unfortunately, our entire country is a soft target wet dream. Sooner rather than later,we are going to have to start preeminently whacking some of these CONUS based, fair minded, peace-loving sympathizers of evil! I’m all for giving them the exact same thing they’d get tomorrow on Deera Square after noon prayers in Riyadh, Saudia Arabia. PUBLIC EXECUTION!! Last but certainly not least God rest the souls of our Brothers in Arms and bless their families!

CAARNG 68W

He murdered 4 Marines and what sounds like, severely wounded a Navy Sailor (male or female, it doesn’t matter). This dude, a 24 year old university graduate (I don’t know his major, but it was definitely STEM), had his whole life ahead of himself. Yeah, yeah, I know y’all are gonna hate me for playing Devil’s Advocate (or something close to it for that matter). This dude probably never went to Syria, and had no contact with ISIS outside of Twitter/Instagram and was at most, radicalized after his DUI Arrest this past April. The weapon, that I bet you a dollar was an AR-15, he bought legally, was probably the only firearm he had ever shot. His beard, that of a hipster, was more than likely grown out of trend, not religious conformity. The dude was intelligent enough not to speak out his plans to others. He is the ultimate definition of a “Lone Wolf”. This was more than anything else, an act of terrorism. There is nothing criminal about his actions. Like a lot of criminals, there is those I feel the most sorry for. First and foremast it is the victims and their family that were murdered today. Next, it is the family of the perpetrator. Yeah, I know that his father was on an FBI watch list. He was also a volunteer police officer (the father). Watch list must have been created 12 SEPT 2011. ABDULAZEEZ is in Hell as I type this; the 4 Marines, standing at Parade Rest only moving to Attention to move forward, when the one in front of them moves forward, waiting for St. Peter to let them in. We all know they’ve “Served Their Time in Hell” (I don’t know of Marines sing that Cadence too). Rest in Peace Marines. I hope this Terrorist Attack does not spur further suspicion or criticism of Muslim-Americans (wherever they come or ethnically call themselves), and of more intense and bold not, does not spur further hate of Islam itself. There is little difference between this guy, Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez and Jared Lee Loughner. Both… Read more »

John Robert Mallernee

Having slept through most of the day, I didn’t know anything about this until I was in my pickup truck (with the Confederate flag), listening to Michael Medved on the radio, while driving to Wal-Mart. As I was paying for my goodies at the cash register, I wondered what the guy standing in line behind me, accompanied by his little boys, was thinking, as he observed me standing there, joking with the cashier, while wearing my holstered .357 Magnum service revolver? With the breaking news, I hope he was thinking that maybe he would start wearing his firearm when going shopping. This is rural Utah, and he was wearing a “BYU” baseball cap, so I reckon he was a kindred spirit. Wearing a loaded firearm in Wal-Mart is unusual, but it’s not against the law. I normally wear my revolver everywhere I go, and there’s a carbine and a scoped rifle in the cab of my pickup truck. What is so unusual about having our troops armed when on duty and in uniform? Isn’t that what we see in all the classic Western movies featuring Cavalry charges? If it was okay back in the olden days, why isn’t it okay now? By the way, I do disagree with a previous post calling for tolerance of Islam as an acceptable religion. Islam and the Koran has made it pretty clear just where they stand, and what they think of the rest of us. How well I remember, in the aftermath of the attacks of Tuesday 11 September 2001, the comments of the Islamic high school students in New York City, when interviewed on “SIXTY MINUTES” (?), voicing their approval and support of such jihadist attacks on American institutions. And what of the Palestinians joyfully dancing in the streets and giving out candy? Have we so soon forgotten? The photographs of the bullet holes in that glass entrance next to the sign forbidding firearms is priceless! It makes me think of that same sign posted prominently at the entrances of the George E. Wahlen Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salt… Read more »

I see no reason why it wouldn’t be practical for recruiting personnel, when attired in the Class “A” or Class “B” uniform, to wear a ballistic vest concealed under their shirt, and a holstered .45 caliber Colt Model 1911 on their hip, similar to how the average police officer is outfitted when on patrol.

(Class “A” uniform and Class “B” uniform is Army terminology. I don’t know what the Marine Corps equivalent would be.)

John Robert Mallernee

In addition to wearing a holstered .45 caliber Colt model 1911, each soldier and/or marine could carry their fully loaded M-4 carbine, equipped with an Israeli style sling.

The Israeli style extra long rifle sling keeps the weapon relaxed and at the ready, while not detracting from the appearance of the Class “A” dress uniform, or the Class “B” semi-dress uniform.

The Israeli style extra long rifle sling is what I have on my own personal Colt CAR-15 .223 caliber carbine.

It’s very handy and comfortable.

2/17 Air Cav

The Secretary of the Navy, Ray (Green Fleet) Mabus, was quoted in the NYT as saying, “While we expect our sailors and Marines to go into harm’s way, and they do so without hesitation, an attack at home, in our community, is insidious and unfathomable.” Unfathomable? Really? Where the hell has this guy been?

Hondo

Since 2009, in the SECNAV’s office. Unfortunately.

jerry920

This angers me to no end. “Authorities are looking for motives..” Seriously? The Lame Stream Media wasted no time on pinning “White Extremist” groups on the church murders, but we just can’t find a motive to the murder of four Marines. Gosh I can’t imagine why. Dylann Roof was motivated by White Extremists and the confederate flag of course! But Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez, oh he was just a lone gunman, nothing to dig into here.

America is going to “PC” itself into dhimmitude, and we get to watch it happen.

Lawrence Todd

How hard would it be in these small (and large) unguarded facilities to have some of the staff designated in additional duties to be security and with that designation be required to carry a sidearm. The operation rules should be that one person so designated must be present at all times when the facility is open for business. As for the marines as in this shooting, I always felt that every marine no matter what their specialization can and historically has gone into harms way in times of great need. Let them defend them self!

2/17 Air Cav

Well, the “shooting” will be thoroughly investigated, oBaMa says. And I am sure that it will be. There will be many federal agents involved and much drawn-out work done. Months will pass and someone will eventually ask, “Whatever happened to that investigation?” and there will be little comment because, after all, the investigation will be ongoing. In the end, the “shooter” or “lone gunman” as he will be referred to by LE and Big Media who won’t want to use his name (neither did oBaMa yesterday AFTER the Typical Radical Muslim Bastard had been ID’ed officially) the case will be quietly closed. There will be work groups and recommendations forthcoming as to how security can be increased (e.g., “The committee recommends personal panic alarms be issued and a phone in each office be hardwired to military and civilian police.”)

I guess we’ll just have to await that real shooting war that is inevitable while oBaMa issues greetings and well wishes to Muslims around the world, as he did yesterday via his Twitter account.

Ex-PH2

When these braindead pacifist appeasers wake up and smell the coffee, let me know. The majority of people in this country will see a report on an attack in a shopping mall in another country (Nairobi, Kenya) and have about 5 minutes of distress over it, if that, and then let it go, because it couldn’t possibly happen here.

Well, it can. It already has, more than once. Must I pull up the truck bomb in the World Trade Center basement? The Oklahoma City truck bomb? The hijackers in four planes? The beer keg bomb builders in Chicago during the NATO conference? The mobs that invade stores to steal everything they can?

How many more incidents should I bring up? Are just rehearsals for other events, or a warning to those who are mostly asleep at the switch in this country, who really do think ‘it can’t happen here’?

You can’t blame this event on a gun. I never saw a recruiter with a gun in the 1960s, and I’m not sure that having one might have done any real good in this case. Ambushes are meant to take the target by surprise, every time.

Hey, stupid! Snap out of it! The coffee’s burning, you idiot!

John Robert Mallernee

@ EX-PH2:

I certainly hope you “never saw a recruiter with a gun in the 1960s”, or any other time.

Soldiers and Marines never carry guns.

What we carry is a rifle, a weapon, or a piece.

Guns are mounted on Navy vessels or tracked vehicles.

Mere accidental mention of the word, “gun”, results in numerous pushups or laps around the parade field or compound.

Ex-PH2

Oh, yeah?
Then explain this little verbal exercise:
This is my rifle.
This is my gun.
This is for killing.
This is for fun.

Didn’t come from the Navy.

John Robert Mallernee

That’s how the Army and the Marine Corps teaches the use of correct English grammar.

Ex-PH2

Picky, picky, picky. A gun is a tube that uses an explosive powder to project a ballistic missile over a distance to a target.

A gun by any other name will still smell of gunpowder.

Give me guns and liberty or give me a hamburger.

I could go on all day. 🙂

PH2- that little ditty was recited by recruits who erroneously called their rifle a ‘gun’ and was recited while holding the rifle in one hand with the other on the penis.

Nothing I can add to this. My family has property near Chattanooga and we usually visit the aquarium and Lookout Point park when we’re there. We’re hoping to move near Chattanooga in the near future. I love the surrounding area and I take this a bit personally. That’s my adopted town dammit! Nice shooting by the LEO’s involved.

Ex-PH2

Oh, now, Mike, you have to understand their point of view. They are mentally hiding under their desks, like the scared bunnies they are, and will dart back under there ASAP.

They won’t poke their little pink noses out unless everything is fine… everything is just fine… maintain an even strain.

Geez, Mike, don’t you know that these idiots are afraid of their own shadows and will hand over the keys to their entire lives on demand, because fightin back isn’t ‘nice’? (Whatever ‘nice’ means now, escapes me.)

Hondo

I will call this precisely what it was. This was an act of terrorism directed against the US military in support of radical Islam and world jihad. Whether it was carried out by a “lone attacker” or a ISIS/al Qaeda/other operative is irrelevant.

We have been at war with radical Islam since 1996, when bin Laden declared war (jihad) on us in the name of radical Islam. However, some US administrations since then have denied this reality.

Clintoon did nothing except treat it as a “law enforcement” problem; that cost us dearly on 11 September of the year he left office. Due to that clueless neglect, the blood of roughly 3,000 US residents is on his hands.

Since 2009, the current Administration – led by the current POTUS – has done much the same as did Clintoon. You do the math.

David

Your only error is the start year – modern conflict started 4 November 1979 under Jimmeh.

FatCircles0311

Actually we’ve been at war with Islamists for over 200 years now. Our first foreign military action was against Islamists in now Libya. Nothing has changed.

The United States is the antithesis of Islam and we will forever be attacked by its supremcists. Sadly we have few leaders that will acknowledge this and actually prefer Islam over the U.S. constitution.

Green Thumb

My thoughts and prayers to their families for this senseless act.
