Sandon Matthew Sierad; bad behavior from PTSD
About a year ago, this fellow, Sandon Matthew Sierad, got the snot beat out of him by cops in Walmart. You can see the video of the encounter at the link. Mr. Sierad is a pretty big dude, stretched out to 6’7″ I’m sure that influenced the police somewhat. Also, the police had received three 9-11 calls before this happened in regards to Mr. Sierad;
Smith said deputies were called to the store just after 1 p.m. on that day in reference to a man acting strangely and disturbing shoppers at the store. Smith said deputies received three calls about the man, later identified as Sandon Matthew Sierad, 32.
The first call came in at 1:06 p.m. where the caller was inside the Walmart. The second call came in at 1:10 p.m., in which the caller reported a suspicious person. The third 911 call was placed by Sierad, who called to report he could not find his vehicle in the parking lot, Smith said.
In the video at the news story in the first paragraph above, Sierad claims that he suffers from PTSD, of course, and that because he has a dishonorable discharge, he can’t get help from the VA. Well, he did get a dishonorable discharge for persistent drug abuse and for being disrespectful to his sergeants and officers – you know much like he was to the police. You can see from his DD214, down there in the reenlistment code, the Marine Corps didn’t want him to come back.
I noticed in his records that he had a Combat Action Ribbon, but he had no campaign medals to indicate where or when he might have caught the PTSD. The only deployment of 3/2 Marines, the unit which Sierad was assigned during his nearly four years of service was to Kuwait in 2003, and later to Iraq in the Battle of Nasiriyah during the search for the Army folks of the 507th Maintenance Company (Jessica Lynch, et al.). One Marine was killed in that battle. I can’t tell from the records whether Sierad was on the deployment with them or if he was involved in the battle in Iraq, but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.
So I thought, maybe it was possible that Sierad was self-medicating, from those experiences. But then I looked at his court martial records, and he’s been self-medicating for a while. The Marine Corps gave him non-judicial punishment more than a year before 3/2 Marines deployed to Kuwait for illegal drug use and his insubordinate behavior.
The Marine Corps tried to get Sierad into counseling for his drug and alcohol abuse, but, as his platoon sergeant said in testimony at the court martial, the only thing that Sierad wanted was a discharge. His complaints that he can’t get treatment now rings hollow since he had the opportunity to get treatment a decade ago.
In the Walmart incident, police were determined to have acted appropriately under the circumstances and no charges were filed against the police, even though one of the officers had already resigned.
And, oh, by the way, a year and a half before the Walmart incident, Sierad was charged with first-degree assault and battery, resisting arrest and trespassing in another adventure with the police.
But these self-diagnosis of PTSD are starting to get on my nerves. For one thing, everyone thinks that veterans are all just one cross word away from going on a killing spree, and for another thing, these people are standing in the way of veterans with real problems, clogging up the system with their long histories of being sociopaths and drug users claiming that they’re so wounded by PTS.
Category: Who knows
Damn I have the PTSD Bug also but I’ve never gone out and raised hell like this DUDE LMAO!!!!
I hate most people not all and love to be left alone
Guess that make me a weirdo
I can’t help it. This guy was right just the kind of Jarhead I looked for as a platoon Sgt. Big phuk with an attitude. Loved those guys. Maybe one day K D Williams or Kathanick will read this. I had a bunch of these guy that probably would have been Privets in any other platoon.
When the shit hits the fan, you definitely want them around. I am not giving the guy a pass for being a shitbird, BUT, I always seen these guy as not having any leadership with balls.
If Kanthick or K D Williams ever read this, you still owe me.
I have had guys that were like that,, this motherfucker doesnt fit the bill,,, He is a druggie looking for a way out.
You are probably right, but if I would gave got his ass 18 months in who knows. Most are not salvageable but many are.
Never wrote a charge sheet on anyone, not one. Never sent one of my Marines up for NJP. I took care of it within the platoon.
Of course we were not just the average group of people either. Most of them fought to get in those units. I don’t know brother, maybe he was just a fuck up then too, but he earned an EGA so there was something there at one point.
Semper Fi.
Damn, I need to proof read before I click on that damn post button. One day some Ex-PH2 is going to have my ass over it.
But he self identified as having ptsd. Its not PC to doubt someone’s self identification. I think im going to start self identifying as the king of America. If people doubt me, how will I ever get a palace and riches that should go with my self identification?
Heh. Piker.
I used to self identify as Emperor of All I Survey! (exclamation point is actually part of the title. Don’t judge). That meant that if it existed, and I knew about it, I was emperor of it.
Then, I got to thinking it through. Paper work. Admin. More paperwork. More admin. No way a weekend off could get sneaked in, let alone an actual vacation.
So, I changed my self identify. Now I am Head Rebel, BBQer of the Sacred Cow and Chief Iconoclast In Charge.
That translates to me not having to do a damned thing I don’t wanna.
Gotta be careful with the selfy identifies.
Hey, Emperor, what happened to “crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of their women?” Are you telling me there’s fine print that goes with it?
How about if I “self-identify” as the star performer of a real-time porn reality show, in which I can engage in explicit sexual activity any time, anywhere, with any female present, whenever I feel like it? I’d say that’s no less legitimate than this crap, or Bradley Manning “self-identifying” as a chick, or Hildebeast “self-identifying” as the next President of the United States.
It’s nice to see an officer willing to punch the crap out of someone, nowadays. Yeah, I know that the punches were ineffective and not well placed but, still, I find it refreshing.
IDK, looked like he was rabbit punchin the back of his head. Maybe he was just trying to get that weasels attention as in ” if you don’t stop this shit I’m going to turn you over and apply this to your throat”
Refreshing? That’s a new one! lol!
He didn’t get a dishonorable, he got an other than honorable which is NOT a punitive discharge, rather an administrative discharge. It does however bar benefits and you cant re-enlist without a waiver.
The PTSD diag has been abused and misused by the frackups and politicals from very nearly the day after it was given its new name.
Everyone is responsible for their actions. Diagnosis be damned.
Those who are legit with it better start stepping the frack up and fighting back against the exploiters and excuse mongers.
The PTSD has been caught so many times, it’s probably a virus. I’m sure the CDC is working on it right now. It’s carried by loons and other strange birds.
I can’t say as I’ve ever had it, but I eat properly and always wash my hands, which might account for it. I don’t hang out in alleyways or look for food in dumpsters.
Gotta be a virus.
It’s carried by loons and other strange birds.
Ah, that would be Avis Faex, the North American Shitbird. They are known for their distinctive call that sounds like a constant stream of complaints and their lack of interest in doing anything that approaches work.
As I suspected, and not as rare a bird as once it was thought to be. It is, in fact, becoming quite a common bird as more and more of them are found flapping around.
The problem is that the corrective measures used to keep them so rare have been forbidden by Fish and Wildlife for several years now. That’s why they’re popping up all over the place.
Are they afraid of motorboat motors?
I’ve heard that they jump right out of the water into fishing boats, but I thought that was to get to the Asian carp.
I wonder if VA abd other Psych Professionals don’t think “AW shit, is this just another freeloader?” the moment they see “PTSD” on someones paperwork? I wonder if they don’t see about ten freeloaders looking for something for every patient they see that legitimately has it? Methinks THIS taint-sniffing lump of moldy swamp roach shit needs some time in lockup with Bubba & Thor!
WAAAAAAAA….
Nothing More
This is going to piss some of you off, others it will not affect.
I am as tired as the rest of you of seeing PTSD used an excuse for bad behavior, But in this guys case it may be a fact.
Looking at his record I see 3 years of good service and then it went down hill fast.
I also see a Combat Action Ribbon, they don’t just hand those out for selling enough cookies.
PTSD untreated is an awful thing, that early in the war the services did not have a real good handle on how to deal with it, they still dont.
He fucked up no doubt but I still see a Vet who could use some real counseling and help.
There but for the grace of God go I.
What I see is another fucktard using worthless service as an excuse to run amok.
#nosympathy
E4U,
First, hope you are well.
Second, you may be right!
However, he was in the best place at the best time to get help and apparently choose not to or failed to follow lawful orders to square his sea bag away.
So, you may be right … But this guy is wrong!
Have a safe one tonight!
T
E4U–I don’t.
His first CM was in May of 2002, he barely made 18 months before he stomped on his dick hard. Chances are pretty good there were plenty of warning signs, and possibly other NJPs prior to his court martial.
And rather than use that opportunity as a wakeup call, he kept his shit up until he got tossed out on his ass.
Ask anyone who served with him how far off the mark I am.
I don’t see three years of good service.
He started fucking up at about 20 months in.
He looks like he was a fucking nightmare to supervise.
He reminds me of a shitbird we had in one of my AD Units who was a “PX Ranger” to boot. He ran his mouth and fucked off to the point where no one even remotely wanted to help him out thus his getting a Field Grade Article 15 with all the trimmings, and his discharge as soon as his “45 and 45” were over with. Yeah, I had some shitbirds in my time as an NCO, I salvaged those I could help, but I would “cut the cord” and let them go if they weren’t going to help themselves.
That sounds good. I used to love idiots with rank that always said “their are no bad troops just bad leaders”. I was a just matter of time before that troop pissed of someone important than they became a bad solder.
Reasonable people can disagree, E4Y. And here we’ll have to.
I have to agree with SEA and Just and Old Dog. Looks to me like the guy decided he (1) wanted out, and (2) was hell-bent on getting out as soon as he could by any means possible. Obviously he discovered a new love for “alternative smoking materials”.
It looks like his “problems” started not too awfully long after Sep 2001 – about 6 mo or so after. I find the timing of that . . . curious. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a bit of “Oh, sh!t, I might have to go to war for real, and that scares me” mixed in too.
I’m thinking he “discovered” he liked “alternative smoking materials” sometime after Sep 2001, when he realized “sh!t just got real”. And I’m also thinking perhaps his sudden discovery that he loved weed more than the USMC wasn’t all that spontaneous and unplanned, either.
6 foot 7 inches = XXL POS …
That is all.
Okay, I have a sea story that is going to make all of you grind your teeth and snarl. Remember Ray Mouncey, the guy who always took the first and last cups of coffee but never made a pot? Well, unbeknownst to me (because I had just arrived at NPC), he had a girlfriend named Kay. She had wound him around her little finger and snared him (even though he was dating me, too while she was out) because she worked so industriously and was, in his words, a no-nonsense kind of girl. She was not to be found anywhere, because in the course of being stationed at NPC where she could end up as a desk jockey, she had complained about pain in her feet and was whisked over to Bethesda Naval Hospital where it was discovered that she had – wait for it – arthritis in both feet. Her claim was that it was from all that marching we did at Bainbridge (to the chow hall and back, to classrooms and back to the barracks) and then at Photo “A” School at NATTU NAS Pensacola, where we peon E-2s (PHAAs) were not allowed to get into vehicles but were required to form up and march to Building 1500 for classes, where most of us were on our feet all day. Oddly, she hadn’t complained about painful feet while she was there – or so I was told. Her company, in fact, was the one graduating ahead of mine at RTC(W) Baindbridge, and they had all departed for various places before any of us newbies arrived. Now, you’d think that all that marching hither and yon was something she’d have reported at morning sick call, right? Ho. She did not. She did not report it at “A” School, either. No, Kay not only did not report it until she had hooked Mouncey around her little finger and then, OH. MY. GOD! How those little piggies of hers did ache! She eventually was discharged from Bethesda, and got a service-connected disability for what we all know is a chronic condition… Read more »
Knew a female staff sergeant when at DLI in ’77 who was planning her disability retirement… had mild asthma but smoked heavily to make it worse. Not PTSD but definitely milking the system.
He wouldnt have The Iraqi Campaign Medal because he was shit-canned before it was created. His Chrono page is a hot mess.
ICM? Not seeing any mention of it in any of the posted pages.
The original post mentioned he had the Combat Action Ribbon but no Campaign Medals to go with it.
He got the heave-ho before the ICM was even created, so logically it wouldn’t be on his DD-214.
He would rate it, as well as the GWOT medal.
Duffle blog is on it.

“Mike Tyler, an Army veteran who diagnosed himself with PTSD four years ago, […]”
I’ve kept pretty much quiet about the PTSD issue for the obvious reasons. There are in fact genuine cases of it; inevitably as a result of some bad situations in close-up combat. There’s probably one hell of a lot of combat exposed vets from WW 2 that earned the diagnosis unquestionably than some of those rated these days. Seems like “shell-shocked” was entrée of the day at the time; no dessert monthly check for your life’s meal later on. Here’s the shocker for the doubters in today’s crazy world…In a discussion with a therapist not long ago, I just had to ask, “Are all the dudes in PTSD Group serious combat veterans?” My curiosity had been raised by noting to myself that one dude in Motor T was part of a group. The answer surprised me. “No, not all PTSD is necessarily combat rated. Some may have had personal issues beyond and above combat”. Any questions why I have some doubt, but choose to keep my thoughts to myself? There’s a can of worms that I don’t care to open somewhere, so I just go along with the program and don’t stir up the shit. That being said, one learns quickly the traits of true PTSD and the similarities shared by all who were actually CAR earned. Won’t go into a long dissertation, but some of the above would include “I have never had a good night’s sleep since returning from RVN 46 years ago”;, yes, the hard to understand “startle” effect such as certain loud noises or just someone coming in to a room unexpectedly (my better half turns the light on & off a number of times when coming into a room when I was not expecting it); the damned near inability to sleep until daylight on a regular basis; occasional serious temper problems without much encouragement; being set off by flashbacks on a moment’s notice when exposed to events from back in the RVN days; and let me close with big one……We all just want to be left the fuck alone and away from crowds, including Wal-Mart.… Read more »
PTSD is most often not chronic. It most certainly does not have to be. It is the ‘Disorder’ part of that acronym that is over looked in most people that think they have it. I am making no attempt to offer a tentative diagnosis about any particular individual with this post. It is impossible to effectively do such a thing online. The man who is primarly responsible for writing the diagnostic criteria that established PTSD states that it is grossly over diagnosed. Simply put, most of those diagnosed with PTSD do not have it in his opinion. It is being diagnosed by well meaning paraprofessionals that are not qualified to treat the very thing they diagnose. Everyone experiences Post Traumatic Stress. Everyone. Every single living person capable of conscious thought. Dogs do. So do most other living animals that are multi-cellular. It is created by a genetic predisposition to avoid experiencing trauma over and over. When an animal is subjected to prolonged abuse the response is imprinted on that animals reaction to stress. Now for the ‘Disorder’ part. If an abused dog responds to someone raising their voice by attacking or cowering and urinating’ that behavior is not acceptable or safe. Teaching the dog to respond in a different manner takes time. As their environment changes most often their response will. When it does not change their condition is chronic. This so called chronic condition can still be treated over time with a whole slew of exercises that will help them reduce the learned response causing problems. If anything I just said is untrue, then rescuing dogs does not work. Of course it does in most cases. What we do not do to a dog in the process of rescuing it is make the dog relive the moment of trauma over and over again with other dogs that have been subjected to the same kind of trauma. Anyone that did such a thing would be called abusive. This current so called ‘Treatment Plan’ of making people recount their most traumatic experiences over and over does not offer a single measure… Read more »
Dave Hardin…There’s a couple of points in particular in your post that you have no earthly idea how absolutely right you are. First, the VA’s notion that having a PTSD diagnosed vet “make” him go over and over some of the worst experiences still haunting him is IMO practicing some kind of voodoo. Keep in mind bro., we are of the Devil Dog breed; we don’t always mind well or play well with others. “Not no, but HELL no”, was my response to that hocus pocus bullshit. Funny thing, now that you mention it, the dude from Motor T claims that specific treatment helped him tremendously. So I’m naturally thinking at the time, “Then what the fuck are you still doing in here?” A written plan of action sounds reasonable to anyone. Trouble is, those plans have never seen the light of day yet. Meds, that’s really another can of worms. First thing you learn is…”We all have our own little pharmacies at home” Not going to expand on that; but when the question is, “Has your medicine helped?” and the answer is not, “Yep, I’m cured, sleeping well, and comfortable to be in big crowds and can get along well with people now”…… “Let’s try increasing your dosage AGAIN”….there’s the so-called elusive program of which you speak. Exchanging horror stories won’t help anything; that’s a fact. Truth of the matter, just going to required GROUP in addition to the periodic required visits to different members of the Shrink Society and all the practicing “Hope To Be’s of that crowd….the regularly scheduled appointments just keep alive the nightmares. Easy to say, “Just hit the road and get away from the maddening crowd”, but after a few years of self-limiting one’s self on all the prescribed meds, it’s a LOT easier said than done. My guess is some in the program wished they’d have never begun. Before you know it you are on the last leg of your life’s journey and just tend to go along to get along. Staying BUSY with more jobs than you can expect to finish in… Read more »
My favorite is when the social worker types scream that all vets are good people. Especially when seeking financial assistance and shelter.
They never understand what discharges are all about. If seems these days if you get a general, BCD, etc., it all about the PTSD. Not the drugs, the sexual assault, the pedophilia, the larceny, the theft, etc.
So lets help these folks out with handouts and shelter and not give credence and respect to those that did their time honorably and fell on hard times.
Maggots.
Green Thumb…You, too have touched on a subject that compounds the whole PTSD diagnosis. Hard & simple fact is there are a LOT social workers and therapists (who out-source work from the VA) who are making a living by constantly shoveling another diagnosis under the door to remain employed, IMO. Another diagnosis, need for monthly return visits and hopefully need to attend group as often as possible. Presto, there you have it; a new cottage industry has arrived. Allow me to hit big on one matter I left out when responding to Dave Hardin. About this meaningful and absolute reality referred to as the “startle” effect. Yes it is for real and a problem with vets affected by it. These signs we see on veteran’s porches demanding peace and quiet; that DOES NOT seem to be an issue with anyone else in a PTSD program. As I explained, my wife always flips on the light switch a couple of times when entering a room and let’s say I am shaving. To wake me up some mornings she shuffles her feet on the floor until I hear it and wake up without ANY problem. In other words, we deal with it! What could be simpler than that? As for fireworks going off on and around July 4th what A SHOCKER!!!! Whodathunkit on the fourth?? Even Daffy Duck under the influence of a bottle of M D 20/20 could anticipate fireworks on the 4th! Now if a really big bang such as one of the old M 80’s or even one of the old cherry bombs had suddenly interrupted hours of peace & quiet at my front door without any warning…that would be a different story. One that I’m certain I could explain my position and have a small warning and different reaction the next time. Finally there’s the matter of a real PTSD diagnosed vet and his need to warn the world. Most EVERY vet I know simply wants to be left the hell alone. Targets for ridicule, targets for some bad-ass (or so he thinks) fool to think someone is… Read more »
