Country Music and Them Evil Gun Things

| April 17, 2015

I’ll readily admit I haven’t really followed country music since it got all poppy, but this story is toooo good to leave alone. Still enjoy bluegrass and old country though.

Almost by definition old “Country” music embraced a certain rural paradigm that included guns ‘n ammo as a part of life.

However, some current country stars have stepped in the Kimchi.     Aside: In all fairness Kimchi is supposed to be a very healthy food, but my use of it here should make clear my opinion.

“On July 17, country singers Tim McGraw and Billy Currington will headline a fundraiser for gun control group Sandy Hook Promise in Connecticut.”

Then today we get the news that one of the above is saying  – “DOH!”

Country fans were outraged and on April 16, Currington announced he was pulling out of the concert.”

I rather appreciate the general “care about the victims” attitude, and am willing to believe this event is just performer management lack of wisdom, but when your name is involved the performer has primary responsibility methinks.

I don’t think I can name a  single Billy Currington tune just now, but I soon will. If I like it I will buy a CD as well.  His move took a certain sense of responsibility that I want to support.

Not sure I’d go out and buy that Currington CD just yet, Zero. He did sign up to headline the show in the first place. Plus, his stated reason for pulling out seems more to be “Hey, I don’t want to get involved in any controversy” than anything else.

Poetrooper

McGraw is about to become a Dixie Chicken.

Blaster

Tim McGraw stays just quiet enough to stay out of trouble w/ country music fans. I have for a long time felt that he was very liberal. I dont really care for his music or that of his girlfriend Kenny Chesney.

Country music went downhill in the 90’s and rock all but died. Everything i listen to is considered classics in both catagories.

UpNorth

McGraw and his wife, Faith Hill, are liberals who boast that they voted for Øbama twice and can’t wait to vote for Her Heinous, Hillzy.
Tim wants to take guns away from regular citizens but, it’s OK for him and his to have guns. The linked-to story has pics. http://toprightnews.com/daughter-of-anti-gun-country-singer-tim-mcgraw-shows-off-her-numerous-guns-on-facebook/

“… or that of his girlfriend Kenny Chesney”

Spew alert, please Blaster!!
Bwhahahahahaha.

Hondo

Don’t think that tune is his style, PT. (smile)

The Other Whitey

There’s another fairly recent country star named Justin Moore. He’s had success with songs like “If Heaven Wasn’t So Far Away” and “I Could Kick Your Ass” (both personal favorites of mine). He’s openly, rabidly pro-gun. He’s also a better musician and singer than both of them. And he thinks they’re pussies.

Liberal country? No drinking, no fighting, no guns, and a pickup truck that can be driven to the opera–provided there is valet parking, of course. Grits are now croutons. Beef is now fish. Barbeque is bad for the environment and, of course, being gay is okay.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

Well the right’s got that douchebag Nugent….draft dodging, apartheid loving, idiot shit stain of a coward pretending to be a man’s man…

The sad part is so many supposedly intelligent people buy that shitbag’s lies and consider his words to have value.

When it comes to jerkoffs in the entertainment world there is just no shortage of them on either side of the aisle and most of them ain’t worth spit in terms of integrity.

2/17 Air Cav

Yeah, entertainers are like politicians. They are both dependent upon masses of people for their livelihoods and as genuine as a Hollywood set. Accordingly, they give the peoples what the peoples want. You peoples want this? Here it is. That? Here you go. Just keep voting for me or buying tickets to my shows or movies.

JohnE

What do they say? The only bad publicity is no publicity…

2/17 Air Cav

“Hey, cowboy, love your chaps. My name is Lance. What’s yours?”

“I Could Kick Your Ass”

Veritas Omnia Vincit

Couple a douchenozzle whiners wanna fund raise for a stupid cause, who cares.

Dopey entertainers have always been dopey and funding causes they have no idea are full of shit or downright wrong.

Travolta and Cruise are fundraisers for one of the biggest scams ever perpetrated on the world….

I don’t give a rat’s ass what these clowns sign up for, that’s the problem in this country too many twatwaffles that think celebrity equals intellect and place undue weight on the words of morons with a single gift for melody or words and no other discernible talents…

I couldn’t pick 90% of what passes for celebrity or sports heroes out of a lineup if my life depended on it…

I’m becoming a bit of a pop culture hermit…and somehow I seem to be surviving rather well these days….who knew right?

Veritas Omnia Vincit

None of that was meant at you bro, more about us as a society of whiny twatwaffles always needing the aid of a fucking celebrity lending a voice to the so-called serious nature of something socially crucial to our continued survival on the planet…

Sorry if it came off like me being a dick to you…

Veritas Omnia Vincit

Got it, and I agree. When kids can place the Kardashian clan into chronological order faster than they can name their congressman and senators we have some serious work to do.

Blaster

Amen to that.

Old Trooper

Wow, VOV; are you getting enough fiber in your diet? You’re starting to sound like me 🙂

Atkron

These days they figure if you put a twang in your voice it is country, when in reality it is just light rock or pop.

McGraw always sounds whiny to me…never did like him, and this just adds to the long list of reasons.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

You could blame the Eagles, those guys are not only great but they could tell a story and blur the line between a pop song and a great country tune…

Reddevil

Never heard of Sandyhook Promise. What is their deal?

Hondo

Well, obviously you didn’t bother to check them out using Google, Bing, or Yahoo. Their website is the first entry on all 3 search engines. And on two of them, their “Mission” page is on the first search screen also.

Reddevil

I did.. It seems on the surface that they advocate responsible gun ownership, rather than gun control, but since so many here are adamant in their opinions against them I assumed there must be more to it.

Of course, the discussion here has been more about what does and does not constitute country music than about gun rights.

Hondo

Fella, do you really need someone to spell out for you what “common sense measures to reduce gun violence” means in this context?

They’re from CT. It’s one of the bluest of the Blue States, and already has some of the most restrictive gun control laws in the nation (look up their Brady Score). And two of the group’s founders appear today to be huge gun control advocates.

Most people of reasonable intellect are capable of “connecting the dots” in such a situation without help or a detailed explanation.

Poetrooper

Damn, Hondo, did Jonn sign you on as TAH’s political drill instructor? If so, I’m all for it, making these political recruits quake in their too-liberal boots.

Reddevil

Hondo, Poetrooper, you both seem to be intelligent people. Don’t assume less of me because I ask a question.

My views on some issues are differentfrom yours. That does not make me stupid or a ‘recruit’. I am by no means liberal, nor am I quaking in my boots because Hondo doesn’t like me.

I am an Army vet of 22 years of active service to include 101st in the Gulf War, 82nd in Haiti, and time as an advisor in Iraq (twice) in 06 and 08. I am just as military as either of you.

If you have an argument, make it. I do not agree with you on this, somi am interested in hearing your views.

Hondo’s argument is basically that he has a conspiracy theory about this group that I am too stupid to understand. That is simply nonsense, and you both know it. argue your point rather than attack me personally.

Bring it. State some facts. Lay it on me. I participate in discourse to learn, not to demonstrate my knowledge.

OC

Over at Townhall.com is a story about him wanting to use Baretta as a name in a movie.
To paraphrase Baretta said FY.

Blaster

Good go them

Blaster

Damming auto-correct. That was supposed to be ” good FOR them”. How the hell did it change “for” to “go”?

OWB

Kinda lost interest in popular music, country or otherwise, when they closed the Ryman Auditorium. George Strait was about as “progressive” as I was willing to go in that genre.

Yep, neither want nor need to know about their politics – just sing a song, do your little dance, and get off the stage.

fm2176

Another reason to listen to Sirius XM’s Willie’s Roadhouse and Outlaw Country. Nothing but the classics on the former, and a mix of classics and some newer fringe artists on the latter.

I’ve heard a handful of newer songs I don’t turn off. Currington’s “People are Crazy” was one of them back when I still had to put up with FM.

I’ve shared my experiences with Chesney a couple of times. Never met him personally, but I’ve been a few feet from him and still don’t like the guy. That said, some of his tunes are catchy.

Twist

I like Craig Morgan. His was an Artilleryman during Just Cause. Check out his song “Paradise”.

Here you go

A good country song by Trace Adkins.

Twist, our F-14 driver from Medaryville is there at Arlington.

Yet another one.

Incidentally, Craig Morgan led people to believe he was both SF and Ranger for years. The actual truth is there was some sort of vague “worked with Special Forces” and attendance at ROK Ranger School that made the truth a little shaky. Oh, and he once had those things in the bio on his website in the 2003-2004 timeframe. Heck, just using the Google machine now one can find multiple examples of media referring to him as an Army Ranger. He’s never once formally corrected the record except to quietly delete the items from his site.

Jon The Mechanic

Another singer/songwriter you might like is Keni Thomas.

He was a Ranger who was in the Battle of Mogadishu, and has a couple of very good songs under his belt.

Common Sense

Love his music. My favorite:

AW1Ed

Who can forget the smash hit, “Hadji Girl?”

Eggs

I like this Radney Foster song:

Eggs

Thank you!

Casey

Zero, just out of curiosity, have you ever tried SheDaisy or the Kinleys?

Never mind, I’ll just put some Jerry Reed on. 🙂

Poetrooper

Thank God there’s a country station in Hot Springs that won’t play the new country crap. Their line-up is strictly old country.

Blaster

Well this is another celebrity/ Hollywood type that I will not support. No big deal, I never cared for McGraws music anyway.

I was a fan of Jim Carey until his stupid skit making fun of gun owners. Now I refuel to even watch a rerun of his movies.

My wife was the biggest Dixie Chicks fan there was until they started making liberal asses out of themselves. Then she not only quit buying their cd’s, but will also change the station if they come on.

They all fall somewhere on my list of celebs that I refuse to support. Jackson Brown, Springsteen, shine head Conner, Clooney (sp?), Damon, Baldwin, Ashley Judd (even though she is easy to look at,:)) mellencamp, etc. my personal opinion is that they should perform and keep their politics private, so that I could continue to enjoy their music/acting. Like it was stated above somewhere, they feel that celebrity automatically equals intelligence, but most of them have little formal education and even less real world experience.

Willy Nelson better be careful, or he’ll be on my boycott list too.

If I might be so crass as to put in a plug for a friend of mine, Dave Welch, who was my crew chief with MACS-1 Det C at Al-Asad in 2005-06. A Texan, former Marine, ardent patriot, family man, avid hunter and staunch conservative, he plays old-style country music that might appeal to those of you fed up with poppy modern country. Dave ‘ s a helluva guy who I’m proud to call a friend, and his music can be found at davewelchmusic.com

Friend S. Wilkins

You couldn’t pay me to listen to this crap that’s passed off country music these days. Give me some Dwight Yoakam, Garth, A.J., Merle, Johnny, Waylon, Kris, George, and Willie!
