Fox News reports that last night, American hostage, Luke Somers, was killed by his captors during an attempt by US Special Forces to rescue him;
Luke Somers was still alive, but badly injured when the team reached him, a Yemeni national security official told Fox News. The official said Somers was shot by militants. None of the special forces members were injured.
Hagel said in the statement that the rescue bid was conducted in partnership with the Yemen’s government and its security forces.Ten militants were killed between the rescue attempt and the drone strike prior to the mission, the Yemeni official confirmed.
South African hostage Pierre Korkie was the other hostage killed in the operation, the Gift of the Givers, a South African aid group confirmed.
President Obama, who ordered the mission, released a statement early Saturday morning condemning the “barbaric murder” of Somers.

Glad to see we tried. Sorry to see it didn’t work as we’d hoped.
May those hostages killed rest in peace, and may God comfort their friends and family.
And may Shay’tan torment the ten evil terrorist bastards killed during the attempt for all eternity.
+1
Here-Here.
All omumbles has these days is words. And they ring rather hollow.
“Hagel said in the statement that the rescue bid was conducted in partnership with the Yemen’s government.”
Nope, no operational security issues there. I am really sorry to hear that it wasn’t successful. Hopefully the Spec Ops folks were able to dish out a little kick ass.
My sentiments exactly about OPSEC involving the Yemenis. I’m sure that B. Hussein 0bama hurried off to an important round of golf after he read what was on his teleprompter!
However many hostages there are will be killed. When? I don’t know, but they will be killed. If there lives are worth saving, it would be wise for our brave best would get the green light to go and attempt to release them. In this instance, the hostage was scheduled to be executed. We can guess how. So, the go button was pushed. At least 10 terrorist bastards were killed in the attempt to free him. That’s a helluva lot better equation than releasing five five terrorists bastards to get one traitor returned.
I’d choose a bullet over a slow decapitation on video any day of the week. They will die if we do nothing, they have a chance if we do something.
Yeah. Ain’t that the truth. Kill me in a fight. Don’t slaughter me like a lamb.
“President Obama, who ordered the mission, released a statement early Saturday morning condemning the “barbaric murder” of Somers.”
“Mr. President! Mr. President!…Sir, given your statement just now, any new thoughts or comments then on the Nidal Hasan, Fort Hood shooter?”
“Uhm…no more questions, no more questions, I have a tee time to make with Boehner and Al Sharpton in 30 minutes and Marine One is already on the lawn.”
After the first missed opportunity, I’m sure his captors had kill orders at the first sign of hostilities.
I only wonder if it would have been Hagel giving the news conference if Somers had been successfully rescued.
Of course it would.
This is really sad. Somers was a photojournalist with wanderlust.

You cannot go overseas to do that kind of work with the idea that because you’re not in the military, you’re immune to the rampaging hatred that possesses those creatures. It’s exactly the opposite.
Until these conflicts are resolved in some way, people with wanderlust need to remember that the NatGeo explorers did not face what they would face now. Being nice does not mean you will survive that hostility.
Yep.
I’ve said it before, clerics , educators, and journalists seem to think they have some dispensation from God to go where angels fear to tread. When they get taken by the local flavor terrorist group they expect the government to save their asses, and their families too often demand it. What, Beirut in the 80s wasn’t enough of an object lesson?
