Corporal Jordan L. Spears; first casualty of war against ISIS

Cpl--Jordan-L--Spears

Marine corporal Jordan L. Spears was named as the first casualty of the war against ISIS/ISIL/Islamic State when the Department of Defense called off the search for him after he jumped out of an MV-22 Osprey when he thought like it would crash. From CNN;

Asked how Spears death will be classified, Pentagon spokesman Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby told reporters the question was still being decided.

“Clearly, that squadron and that ship were in the Gulf, supporting Central Command operations. Some of those operations included operations in Iraq and Syria, at least tangentially, through at least some tangential way, support to those missions,” Kirby said, according to a transcript.

“So there’s no question that — that this Marine’s death is related to the operations that are going on, in some form or fashion.”

Even so, he said he did not know whether the Marine’s death would be formally classified as such. The branch of service typically determines how a service member’s death is classified.

The military has not detailed the Osprey’s mission at the time of the incident, which remains under investigation.

Huh? According to the report, he was crew chief and joined with another crew member in leaping into the water when the Osprey experienced some unspecified problem which was remedied. That sounds so bizarre on multiple levels, I don’t know what to say.

Indeed

AW1 Tim

The Osprey encountered severe control issues and was headed down. Both of these crewman jumped because they were certain the aircraft was about to impact the water.

These guys were wearing harnesses attached to anything because they need to move around the cabin as part of their job. So it seems ( me being a former Navy aircrew) that these guys figured they couldn’t get to their seats and strap in in time, so chose to get out. I can understand that emotion.

At the very last possible moment, the aircraft commander regained control of the Osprey and quickly got in on deck. Why only one crewman survived and not the other is a mystery. I’m looking forward to the incident report finding when they are released.

It’s also possible the Aircraft Commander, knowing they were about to impact, gave them the order to bail figuring it would give them more of a fighting chance then hitting water with everyone in it.

Regardless of the circumstances – RIP, Cpl. Spears.

Corporal Jordan L. Spears, thank you young Marine for giving your all to your country and mission. God bless and keep your family now, they are in my prayers as are all of your fellow Marines and all troops there. Now…as for Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby, You’re an ass hat sir! Well “at least tangentially, through at least some tangential way” you managed to mumble a statement out about this young man. However fearing Obama as you do, you can’t come right out and give thanks for the Corporal’s service to his country and mourn his lose. Instead you have to hem haw and pass off even the classification of the death of this young troop to his Branch so that “in some form or fashion” you don’t offend Obama, Kerry or your other masters. You are a shame to the fighting men and women of this nation. This young man died while following orders, on a mission of some type, against our enemy. That is pretty straight forward to me Admiral. But don’t stick your head out too far and actually offer your sympathies to his family or anything respectful like that. Wait until the White House tells the Marine Commandant what to say about it. After all it could be a grave international faux pas to call this Marine Corporal’s death a result of WAR against an enemy who has DECLARED war on him, his fellow troops and their nation. Bottom line here Admiral…he gets a Purple Heart!!! PERIOD. Folks I apologize for my rant about the Admiral on the heals of something as grave as the lose of even one life over there. I was just shocked at NO mention by the Admiral or Pentagon of sympathy for his family or recognition of his service to our country. Just usual political ass covering crap. What the hell are they afraid of in saying he was an honorable young troop, killed too soon and will be missed by his Command and his nation and he will have honors rendered accordingly. Again, I apologize if I used the… Read more »

Well said, Sparks.

This Admiral is the very sort of political animal that president mom-jeans wants in “his” military. One who puts his personal career ahead of everything else, and can also find a way to ensure that no blame of any sort attaches to him or anyone in the chain of command above him.

I can only hope that the next POTUS will find a way to clean house and restore to our military the leadership it deserves.

But yeah. This guy is an ass by any definition of the word.

Ex-PH2

Sparks, you are wasting your breath complaining about them. They have all the sensitivity of gravel. Nothing matters unless it is about THEM, and never will.

My additional thought is: how and when did a spokesperson’s job become a 2-star flag billet? It would seem that, MAYBE, the head of DoD PAO would be a 2-star, but that a spokesperson would be an O-6 at most. But then, pay grades for civilian and military “senior leader” jobs have become very inflated over time.

Rock8

Agreed.

Ex-PH2

Better death this way than at the hands of the ISers.

RIP, Marine.

Rest well now proud warrior. My Prayers for your family and friends at this difficult time.

Captain Crunch

He bails from the Osprey which recovered and was just fine. Casualty of stupidity.

Marine_7002

Hey, Captain Dipshit,

Maybe you missed the part in the CNN story (or maybe your powers of comprehension are exceptionally poor) that another Marine in the MV-22 also bailed, obviously also thinking that the aircraft was about to hit the water.

He survived and was recovered – was he stupid too?

Take your “stupidity” comment and shove it up your fundamental orifice.

NR Pax

We’re discussing a Marine that died on duty. Take your fucking disrespect over to Daily Kos if you can’t stay civil.

OldCorpsTanker72

He was there, Crunch. You weren’t.

PS Kiss my ass.

PavePusher

You could, at the very least, wait until a report with some actual information comes out.

MGySgtRet.

Hey Captain, unless you are privy to some information that the rest of us mortals don’t have, how about respect the dead and keep your shit comments to yourself. There is a family that is going through a lot of pain right now and so is his unit. So in summary, Shut Your Fucking Cockholster.

HS Junior

RIP, sir. Thank you in the highest way for your sacrifice. I wish you an eternity at the hand of god.
