Syria airstrikes on hold because of intelligence

The Washington Post, by way of the Stars & Stripes reports that the Obama Administration is making excuses about striking ISIS/ISIL/Islamic State targets in Syria. It funny how they charge bullheaded into domestic issues, but when it comes time for foreign policy decisions, they always have an excuse why they can’t act;

American spy agencies have not yet assembled the capabilities that would be needed to target Islamic State leaders and provide intelligence with enough reliability to sustain a campaign of strikes.

“Our intelligence is improving since we began devoting the resources to doing that, but we still have only modest visibility into what is going on in Syria,” said Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., a member of the House Intelligence Committee.

A senior U.S. intelligence official said that “it would probably take some number of months to really build up the necessary intelligence architecture” to expand the U.S. air campaign underway in Iraq against Islamic State positions in Syria. “This is not going to end anytime soon.”

The Obama administration has counted on Predator and Reaper aircraft to carry out hundreds of strikes against al-Qaida targets in Pakistan and Yemen, countries where it has at least tacit permission to fly armed drones. The planes conduct near-constant surveillance over extensive territory in both countries and often spend days tracking targets before a missile launch.

But the use of drones is far riskier in Syria, where the forces of President Bashar Assad guard the country’s airspace with missile batteries and fighter aircraft. The Islamic State seeks to overthrow Assad, and strikes against the group would be in his interest. But allowing American drones to reach cities such as Raqqah — an Islamic State stronghold — would also probably be seen by Assad as a threat, in part because such aircraft could gather valuable intelligence on his forces.

I’m sure Jimmy Doolittle worried about things like intelligence and anti-aircraft fire when he planned his raid on the Japanese mainland.

Obama warned that the United States would be “relentless” in its response. Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, described the Islamic State as “an apocalyptic, end-of-days” organization that cannot be defeated unless it is “addressed on both sides of what is essentially at this point a nonexistent border.”

You keep using that word “relentless”. I do not think it means what you think it means. I’m pretty sure it doesn’t mean to sit on your ass and think up excuses to avoid doing what needs to be done.

“Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, described the Islamic State as “an apocalyptic, end-of-days” organization that cannot be defeated unless it is “addressed on both sides of what is essentially at this point a nonexistent border.”

I guess GEN Dempsey knows a little about “both sides” of things – today he says this:

“The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has said that he would not recommend U.S. military airstrikes against Islamic State militants in Syria until he determines that they have become a direct threat to the U.S.”

I suppose that once they load up LCTs and hit the Jersey Shore, he’ll consider action. But would losing the Jersey Shore really be a loss? Maybe I should have picked another beach…

Here’s a bit of ‘intelligence’ from Reuters this morning:

“Libya is unable to protect oilfields and other state assets, needs foreign help, Libyan ambassador in Cairo says – @ReutersEnd of alert 25 AUG 2014”

Also, a little tidbit from CNN about the ISers seizing a Syrian airbase in Raqa:

http://www.cnn.com/2014/08/25/world/meast/syria-isis/index.html

And this is earlier from France24 news:
http://www.france24.com/en/20140807-isis-seize-syrian-army-base-raqa-islamist/#./?&_suid=140897183484301530420393860802

Maybe I should call the Pentagon and give them the coordinates, because I can to the geo-location on a map in an atlas printed by Rand McNally.

Oh, and Syria says it is ready to work with any state to fight Islamic militants.

Well, I guess my sources are more ‘intelligent’ than DoD’s sources. But then, I don’t work for a damned fool and I’m not a neutered wimp who doesn’t want to ‘get involved’.

Ex-PH2…I will chip in big for a current Rand McNally world map book to send them. Maybe with all their know how and technology they can get it plugged into GPS coordinates and then off we go. Who knew? After all we do have a butt load of satellites orbiting around up there doing…something.

Ex-PH2

Sparks, that’s a nice thought, but you forget one thing: they can’t read maps.

You’d have to send 3rd grade-level written instructions to tell them how to open the atlas, what pages to use, and what the pretty pictures mean.

And this just in:

Yes, if you want ‘intelligence’, call me, GEN Dempsey. After I get through giving you a piece of my mind (which I would want back, BTW), I’ll e-mail pdfs of maps and some off-the-monitor screenshots, so that you can figure things out.

Call me.

Ex-PH2…Thanks for the article. Do we really care what the Syrian government thinks of airstrikes when they are harboring IS? Screw them.

What a conundrum for the GiC (Golfer in Chief).
To strike against his ersatz Islamic “brothers” overseas, or not? If His Highness’s “brothers” DO take over the Libya oilfields, does teh GiC put a bug in the EPAs ears to lighten up and allow the development of more US oil fields?
Naaah. Guessing on “our” GiC, none of the above. Inept AND a muzzie sympathizer. A double punch that can’t be beat.

So let me get this straight. All these years of watching Syria do their thing and in fact lending aid to one side or the other and we don’t have enough intel for air strikes? That’s what they’re saying now? Dempsey is still wondering if they’re a direct threat to the U.S. For f@ck sake, what’s it take for these worthless ass clowns to get off their lazy, cowardly asses and do something.

I see the answer pretty clearly. If it is part of a country or people who, support, hide, produce or aid IS, then they get air strikes. Bid ones they will never forget. Period. I don’t give a shit what their name is or if they’re Muslim or Southern Baptist, if they are promoting and committing the terror they have then kill them all…now.

Hussein is in the biggest Libtard conundrum there could possibly be. Scuttlebutt is he’s desperately trying to link racist tea party to ISIL, 2nd amendment advocates to Ukraine, and US veterans to the high incarceration rates and deaths of black males in the country.

Quit being so racist, Whitey. He got Bin Laden. How dare you question Hangwringer In Chief.

The Other Whitey

“He got Bin Laden,” yeah, and George Bush yanked Saddam out of his hidey-hole, Reagan flew the Space Shuttle, Nixon walked on the Moon, and FDR carried the flag to the top of Suribachi. That’s my reply every time somebody trots out that bullshit. He didn’t “get” Bin Laden, the pussy-in-chief tried to cancel the operation then made sure that classified hardware was left intact where our enemies could get their hands on it because he was afraid of the fucking Pakistanis! Then that bullshit about not “spiking the football,” yet he does exactly that at every possible opportunity.

Hondo

This is a tactic from Slick Willy’s playbook. UbL only lived to see 9/11 because the Clintoon administration “never had good enough intelligence” to take him out – though they had the chance multiple times.

Seems to me that a famous and brilliant man said something once that’s apropos here: “Those who cannot remember the past are doomed to repeat it.”

If you want to have some fun, go to MSN maps & directions or Google Earth or whatever, find Esfahan in Iran on the map, and count the helicopter gunships and transports on the pads at those three airbases. Then post the numers you get in this thread.

Last time I checked Esfahan, I counted 158 gunships and 34 transport choppers there. But what do I know? I’m just eyeballing it.

Yeah, I know, I’m probably out of date on the numbers, but it’s the giggle factor that counts with me.

And anyway, if I were the King, I’d be working on persuading Iran’s Ayatollah Khameini to crank up his army and start supporting the Iraqis, because that old man doesn’t like the ISers one teensy little bit. I’d also be in serious conversations with Vlad and Xi Jinping about the threat these rabid rats are to them. Boko Haram has now declared it’s holdings in Nigeria to be part of the IS islamic caliphate.

But what do I know? I merely read the overseas news release. 😉

On the other hand, I don’t play golf.

“Syrian airstrikes on hold due to intelligence.”

Or the lack thereof.
