Beeker on Bergdahl
So, Brandon Friedman, affectionately known here on these pages as “Beeker”, an infantry platoon leader in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Vice Chairman of VoteVets as well as the administrator of their blog VetsVoice which TAH effectively killed. Friedman followed Tammy Duckworth to the Department of Veterans Affairs as their chief of new media propaganda, the Director of Online Communications. He left the VA when things started getting too hot at that department and now he is Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, you know to cover for the failures at that agency.
Friedman is cutthroat. He’ll throw anyone under the bus who doesn’t toe the party line. I have intimate knowledge of that. He’s even stooped to using TAH for some of his attempts to cut the wings off of his political opponents. But, I’m saving the specifics of that particular story for a time when I need it. Brandon knows what I’m talking about.
But now, he’s casting aspersions on Bergdahl’s leaders and his unit to salvage the White House’s image in that discussion. Throwing an entire unit under the bus to make the President and this administration, along with Bowe Bergdahl look good.

Of course Friedman says that he’s “not a fan of speculation” just before he begins to speculate. There’s no evidence that there were failures of leadership in Bergdahl’s unit, so Friedman makes them up out of whole cloth. I guess, in a courtroom they’d call that “sowing seeds for reasonable doubt” – the last refuge of a defense attorney who is in over his head. But, you know, a commissioned officer in the United States Army shouldn’t be screwing over his brother officers in that manner.
And even if there was a leadership problem in the unit, that doesn’t mitigate deserting your unit and being the subject of millions of dollars spent on finding you and trading five high value prisoners for you.
The White House has even stooped to calling what Bergdahl’s former platoon mates have done in the media as “Swiftboating” him, according to an NBC White House correspondent, says Breitbart. Of course, it’s misuse of the term – swiftboating means to call out a member of the military on his lies, like the Swiftboat Vets for Truth did to John Kerry. So, in that sense, yes they did swiftboat Bergdahl, but, of course, the White House means to disparage a number of veterans of the Afghanistan War to save the fairy tale that they’re trying to shove down our throats.
So, see, we’re all heroes and worthy of praise unless we turn on the party line – then we’re all shit. Well, Brandon Friedman, you’re shit for turning your back on your brother officers for your thirty pieces of silver.

Suggesting that the platoon could be full of psychopaths the leaders could not/did not control, and that it drove Bergdahl to desertion, is insulting. Another attempt to perpetuate that image some try to paint of people who choose to serve in the military. Beeker should be ashamed of himself for smearing the names of all the NCOs and the PL from the platoon. I am pretty sure the Army Leadership Requirements Model doesn’t teach that method of gaining the trust of subordinates. Good thing Beeker is no longer an Infantry officer, because it seems he has no idea of how to be a leader of men. Bergdahl is just a turd. A unique turd, yes, but just a turd. There are thousands of them in all of the branches of service. I am not certain of the exact number of service members who have gone AWOL/deserted during the GWOT, but I assume it is in the thousands. So of those thousands, Bergdahl is the only one who did abandoned his unit in theater. At least all the rest who split had the decency to leave in the US, where the military would not expend resources trying to recover them and risk lives. Bergdahl also had plenty of time to go AWOL in the states before deployment, so the fact that he waited until he was there speaks of his greater intentions or goals. He is selfish, that selfishness cost lives, resources and distracted from the overall mission in the AO. If I am given the choice of believing a turd who a bunch of civilians are trying to defend the character of, or a half dozen members of said turd’s unit who attest to the turd’s turdness, I am going to believe the half dozen a million times out of a million. Notice there are not stories of other members of this unit coming out and attacking the character of those who have already chosen to speak against Bergdahl.
His unit members have nothing to gain, and will endure the wrath of the left for speaking out. Pretty easy choice on who to believe.
I just read his twitter posts prior to these. Talk about a partisan hack, wow. I always wonder if peeps like these actually believe what they write or simply go to extremes to pay the bills and further their political careers.

The more I think about it, the more I have to wonder what the hell Bergdahl was thinking!? Did he really want to join the Taliban or was he really trying to make his way “over the mountains” like some of his fellow soldiers reported him saying? Did he think he could just desert and they wouldn’t look for him? They’d just let him go and it would be done and over with? God, I’d really love to know what some of his thoughts were!

As far as I can tell, “leave no one behind” was a Ranger thing from 1974-1993. After Somalia, it gradually spread throughout the military.
