Afghan probe into attack on journalists begins

Anja Niedringhaus

Last week, an Afghan army officer, Naqibullah, stuck the barrel of his AK47 in the window of an automobile, shouted Allah Akbar, pulled the trigger and killed AP photographer Anja Niedringhaus and wounded senior correspondent Kathy Gannon. Then Naqibullah surrendered to authorities. When asked why he did it, Naqibullah initially responded “I don’t know”, then later said it was revenge for some airstrike that the government says killed 4 Taliban leaders and 12 civilians, then he said it was because of some cleric’s call for a holy war against foreigners in Afghanistan – so you get a multiple choice answer. But the good news is that the Afghan government isn’t jumping to conclusions, as they normally would if it was Afghans being killed.

From the Associated Press;

But the Afghan Interior Ministry, which is overseeing the investigation, told the AP it won’t speculate about a motive so early in its probe into the attack….

Naqibullah was armed with only a pistol on Friday but demanded a subordinate give him an AK-47 automatic rifle, which he used to open fire on the journalists, according to regional officials.

Past insider killings have raised concern about the infiltration of the Taliban and allied militants in the government security forces, although other motives have ranged from personal disputes to traumatic stress.

Well, at least the government is keeping their wits about them in regards to this case, not like when Afghans get killed and they start throwing fingers at Americans and dragging bodies in front of the cameras.

So bold they don’t even run away to escape punishment now. Thanks Obama.

If our boys and girls were allowed to prosecute the war the way they are supposed to, I.e. There is no Hearts and minds bs in war, and our President wasn’t such a pussy, all of this wouldn’t have happened.

Eric

I’ll just add that as a Civil Affairs guy, I seriously frackin’ hated hearing “hearts and minds” every 5 minutes between Iraq and Afghanistan. Far too many people used it without fully understanding it.

I put it right up there with BCTs in Iraq briefing the Div Cdr and telling him “we’re doing 5 HA drops tomorrow. We’ll be handing out soccer balls in 4 neighborhoods and beanie babies in 1 neighborhood.” HA / Humanitarian Assistance is food, water, medical care, shelter. But it kept being tagged as “HA Drops” every time they gave something to a civilian, especially those damn beanie babies.

I have no personal experience with the ANA, and like any military anywhere you get a mix of good and bad people. However, I feel like the fact that we’re just sitting on our hands about American citizens being killed by members of the ANA, officers no less, is beyond disgusting.

I don’t know the right course, but something *has* to be done. Either we leave, or we go back in and depose Karzai, or something, but this quiet dismissal of American deaths at the hands of Afghanistan military personnel by our administration is driving me off the wall and has to stop.

Karzi is leaving anyway correct? Doesn’t really matter though, I’m sure the A – Stan pre will continue the same sh*t he started.

Twist

I wonder how quick after he steps down from being President that he will be on a plane enroute to excile with his ill gotten millions.

UpNorth

I’m not sure, Twist. But there is a rumor that the change-over will be conducted at the bottom of the steps that go up to a Air France Airbus, just so Hamid doesn’t have to hang around one second too long.

Eric

I’m sure he already has his mansion in Dubai fully-stocked with booze, servants, and sex slaves for his billion dollar retirement fund that we gave him for being the “Mayor of Kabul” for all those years.

Eric

I was on FOB Connolly two years ago when two MPs were killed by a green on blue attack. I dealt with the ANA quite a bit up until then. After that I only dealt with the Kandak (Battalion) leadership.

I think in the case of this reporter, the Main Stream Media will also do more investigative journalism into what happened and try to tell the story straight more so than anything else that’s happened in the last 5 years. But that’s just me.

PFM

Dealt with the ANA and ANP a lot as a PSD guy – considering all of the green on blue deaths at the time all our guys were heavily armed and wore all their crap any time we mingled at the meetings. While the bosses chatted inside we stood outside and smiled at the ANA/ANP, making sure they saw the firepower loaded and ready to go. Never had an incident while we were there. Saw the same pattern I saw in Iraq though with a lot of incidents – lack of attention being payed. Someone is ALWAYS watching you…

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

“Didn’t you shoot them because you were overwrought with grief for the killing of 12 civilians?”

“Yeah, That is it. I was–what’s that word?”

“Overwrought.”

“Ueah, I was overweight.”

“Wrought! Overwrought! Just say you were crazy upset. Idiot.”
