Canadian general gone wild

| February 1, 2014

Andy sends us a link to an article that is kind of refreshing, in regards to general officers. It seems that there’s a Canadian former general, Daniel Menard, being held in Afghanistan for weapons smuggling. He resigned from his position in the Army because of a affair he had with a corporal;

The daily Globe and Mail earlier cited Kabul police chief General Zaher Zaher saying Menard was being held for “gun smuggling.”

Canadian government officials told AFP that “consular services are being provided to a Canadian citizen who has been detained in Afghanistan.”

However it would not confirm the person’s identity nor the circumstances surrounding his detention.

Menard was relieved of his command of Canadian troops responsible for Kandahar region in May 2010 due to the affair with the female master corporal.

The Canadian Forces forbid intimate relationships during deployments.

It’s kind of ice to know that US generals aren’t the only ones misbehaving.

“Take off hoser,,, ehhh”

Looks like a paperwork issue and not truly ‘gun running.’ His boinking episode was big news in 2011, especially to his wife. He got fried by the press, pleaded guilty, but got to keep his pension. Mademoiselle Kiss N. Tell, or Master Corporal Frogette, if you prefer, was not rewarded. She was reprimanded and fined.

Isn’t this the same guy who had an ND in a helicopter while he was the commanding General for Canadian forces in Afghanistan and tried to cover it up?? What a douche.

Hondo

PhillyandBCEagles: yeah – same guy. Apparently wasn’t too well thought of in Kabul while he was there. I’m guessing the fact that he was boinking a subordinate, along with the ND, had something to do with that.

I’ve read that he was court-martialed for the ND, but was fined about $3500 and retained in command afterwards. Boinking a subordinate was what finally got him canned.

Grimmy

What’s a ND and how do you do it in a helicopter?

PhillyandBCEagles

#5, ND = Negligent Discharge

Hondo

ND: “negligent discharge” – AKA “putting the booger hook on the bang switch and pressing same with a round in the chamber at an inappropriate and/or unsafe time”.

They can happen anywhere you have a careless person with a weapon and live ammo. Apparently this guy managed to do it in a helicopter while in Afghanistan.

Grimmy

Huh.

I’d always heard it as an “Accidental Discharge” but never by any form of initials.

Also, it applies to both weapons and guns, or so I’ve been told.

Hondo

Based on what’s been made public, Grimmy, I don’t think the guy’s discharging his “gun” over in Afghanistan was an accident.

His weapon? Probably so, as well as being negligent.

Grimmy

LOL yeah.

Oh well. If it wasn’t for the Officer Ranks, we’d have no place to warehouse the truly stupid of the uniform wearers.

Virtual Insanity

I’ll bet the helicopter crew was pretty impressed.

Hondo

Virtual Insanity: doubtless. But most likely they were not favorably impressed. (smile)

J.M.

Ahh fuck. Yon was gloating for months about this guy, claiming he was responsible for getting him canned. Now we’ll have to deal with his tinfoil asshattery again, claiming he tried to warn people for years.

Hondo

J.M.: just chalk that up to an example of the “stopped clock principle”.

Andy

@8, Grimmy, when I first got into the Army (back in the 90’s) I always heard it called a AD or Accidental Discharge. At some point, maybe around 2000ish, there was a attitude shift and they started calling it a ND/negligent discharge.

J.M.

@15: Well it’s only ‘accidental’ if an officer does it. Only Joes are negligent.

Yes, I actually heard a MAJ (that double tapped a clearing barrel) say that.
