Chief recruiter for Taliban releases 37 from Bagram Prison

| January 27, 2014

TSO sends us a link from Tolo News which announces that the Chief recruiter for the Taliban, Hamid Karzai, is making preparations to release nearly half of the prisoners he’s holding in the prison at Bagram. We’re not talking about your run-of-the-mill prisoners, here;

“Of the 88 detainees under dispute, 40 percent have participated in direct attacks wounding or killing 57 Afghan [citizens] and security force members and 30 percent participated in direct attacks wounding or killing 60 US or coalition force members,” the statement said.

The Afghan government has not made any comments on it yet.

The US military says that [the] US has provided “extensive information and evidence on each of the 88 detainees. The disputed cases contain strong evidence of violations of Afghan law or strong investigative leads requiring review by the Saranwal for prosecution or further investigation by the National Directorate of Security.”

President Hamid Karzai on Saturday that the Bagram prison was a “Talib-making factory”. “Bagram [prison] is a place where innocent people are tortured and insulted and made dangerous criminal,” he said.

Yep, Karzai must be getting money from the Taliban, too. In other related Afghan news, five Afghan police officers were killed by one of their own, six Afghans were killed by a roadside bomb, twenty one were killed in a restaurant bombing, including two Americans in Kabul last week. But, the Afghan government still thinks that Americans bombed 10 innocent Afghans, despite evidence that they were Taliban soldiers and firing on American troops.

So why are we planning to leave 10,000 troops after this year?

Run, don’t walk, run out of Afghanistan. Let the groupers and alphabet soup of organizations conduct whatever ops are required while everyone else steps off that carnival ride. The Afghans are going to tear themselves apart as soon as the coalition is weak enough. Ain’t nobody got time for that…

Because death benefits are cheaper than retirement plans.

@1 SFCMP Dead on sir! Why are we even still there now? All we are going to do is line Karzai’s pockets until the Taliban takes over then we will offer him asylum in the US along with his henchmen. Just like Vietnam all over again. Obama has made a huge mess with his campaign and ROE in Afghanistan. He will continue until he has us slither out of that country with more body bags in tow. I say screw the Afghans and all Muslim countries and let them have the countries THEY are willing to fight for or not. You can’t reason with fanaticism. That is all the Muslim run nations are, fanatics. I am tired of the American blood spilled and lives given for the likes of them.

@4 2/17 Air Cav, I read somewhere once, “All of the world is watching America and all of America is watching…TV”.

@5. Yeah, that’s good and it’s true. I wish that right smack dab in the middle of America’s favorite shows, a one-minute summary of the mess in Afghanistan would be broadcast. ANYTHING to awaken the comatose giant. No one seems to give a shit except Veterans and the families of those now serving. It really makes me want to kick the shit out of something sometimes.

Old Trooper

I have said it for a few years, now, that we need to GTFO of that shithole.

@6 2/17 Air Cav. I remember the news coverage every day during Vietnam. Every channel, top news was what was going on there with the latest videos. How often do we see the Afghanistan war lead the CBS, ABC or NBC nightly news now? I can’t remember when. The “comatose giant” as you correctly identified them, wants Justin Bieber, the fat assed Kardashians, and who is on top of American Idol. A shame, a true shame. Because when the big wake up comes and I do believe it will, this nation will have a lot of catching up to do. I truly wonder if our country will be up to the task when it happens.

Haul out what you can carry, burn or blow in place what you can’t. And as far as Karzai goes, screw him. He’s been a political opportunist since the 1980’s, with his allegiance lying in whatever direction keeps him alive that particular day.

Sparks: in Vietnam, for a while we had upwards of 500k troops in-country. I don’t believe we’ve ever had 300k troops deployed between Iraq and Afghanistan at the same time. And there’s been a lot fewer bodies coming back from both Iraq and Afghanistan than was the case in Vietnam – fortunately.

The American public collectively has the attention span of a housefly. Barring bodies coming home, they just don’t seem to notice military operations overseas.

Hondo

NHSparky: correct. But frankly, I can’t completely blame Karzai for that.

In that part of the world, that’s been the way to stay alive for literally millenia. And I’m pretty sure Karzai doesn’t have a death wish.

@4: Remember when Bush was still President the media reporting on the running tally of caualties. Now that he is no longer in office the silence is deafening.

FatCircles0311

Can we pull out already and unload the B52’s?

Pun intended!

@10 Hondo sad but true.

Fox finally awoke and is now carrying this story prominently on its website. They point out that the Pentagon is fuming. Yeah, fuming.

Sirs:

I totally agree that the 30% that acted against US forces should be released immediately. From 1200 feet.
