Reaper 6 author, Andrew Rifkin, to TAH

| November 1, 2013

You might remember the bit we did a few weeks ago about Larry FitzGerald, the subject of a book by the title, Reaper 6, which was being sold as a non-fiction account of one soldier’s experiences in Vietnam, but was a total piece of shit and a collection of some creepy guy’s fantasies. Well, we just got an email from Andrew Rifkin, the author;

To Whom it May Concern,

I am Andrew Rafkin, author of Reaper 6. This notice is in response to the flagrant and misguided attacks on Amazon reviews, Green Beret web page, and a couple of internet marketing sites.

First and foremost, I have nothing but tremendous respect for all men and women who have served in our military, and the highest admiration for all Special Forces who have gone the extra mile to protect the country we hold so dear.

If you have read the book, you know that I recently ran into Larry FitzGerald, a childhood friend, after not having seen him in over 40 years. Larry had a compelling story to tell and expressed an interest in having me write it. I accepted the challenge.

I wrote REAPER 6 as it was told to me, using artistic license only to maintain a fast pace and hold the reader’s attention. I want to make it perfectly clear that I never conspired with Larry to write Reaper 6 with the intent of exploiting our Veterans, or to pursue monetary gain.

In fact, once expenses are covered, a portion of the proceeds from REAPER 6 are being donated to support PTSD and TBI services. Larry made it clear from Day 1 that all he wants this book to accomplish is help for the vets – plain and simple

It is unfortunate that everything posted on the internet remains there. I am 100% secure in the integrity of our goals for this book, and that it is essential to honor and respect all Veterans. To make it clear that we are adamant on this point, I have decided to re-publish Reaper 6 classified as FICTION, GENRE: ACTION/ADVENTURE.

My decision to make this category tag change to REAPER 6 is to honor the respect due to all veterans, and to preserve the excellent reputation I have maintained throughout my life.

Sincerely,

Andrew J. Rafkin

Here’s the thing, I know book authors, some of the greatest authors of this generation, who check their sources. When they’re writing history, they go to great lengths to verify what they’re told. Especially if it sounds like bullshit. They tell exciting tales, but they still verify what they’re being told. After reading this email, I went to Amazon and it still reads;

A Top Secret Story of Unparalleled Heroism… Staff Sergeant Larry FitzGerald, aka “Reaper 6,” of the U.S. Army Special Forces, led a special Black Ops team deployed to Vietnam in 1965. He reported to only two men: General Westmoreland and General Abrams, who were in command of the U.S. Armed Forces. His first assignment-a suicidal mission to assassinate four enemy generals in Laos who were planning the 1967 Tet invasion-was never disclosed to the media or the public. General Westmoreland stated that Sergeant FitzGerald deserved the Medal of Honor, and nine additional Purple Hearts, but unfortunately, most of his missions were conducted across the fence of South Vietnam, in Cambodia, Laos, and North Vietnam. In fact, all of his missions were classified, clandestine, and denied. They have not been disclosed until now. Reaper 6 is the only biography of this extraordinary soldier’s life, capturing the very sights, sounds, and smells of the Vietnam War. Today, Larry is the proverbial “last man standing” of 89 souls who went where lesser soldiers shouldn’t dare.

What in that introduction would lead a reader to believe that the book wasn’t written as non-fiction? What, excluding the words “is” and “the”, don’t sound like total bullshit? In my response to Mr. Rifkin, I told him that I, personally, as a veteran, dirty my hands with his money from the sales of this book and that he should take a flying leap. There’s no apology in his email, just an offer to assuage the guilt of his crime against all veterans, and more so, Vietnam Veterans by paying us off.

No apology, but our attacks are “flagrant and misguided”. He wrote a bullshit book that put all veterans of Vietnam in a bad light, what could be misguided about an attack against the perpetrator of those attacks on us. We could really give a shit about that kind of “tremendous respect for all men and women who have served in our military” when that respect results in a book like that.

It is crystal clear he is in defense mode for potential legal action. He is merely establishing the record for later use. Also, I do think he has a great sense of humor. He wrote,”In fact, once expenses are covered, a portion of the proceeds from REAPER 6 are being donated….” First, what expenses precisely? They are unspecified and may include repayment of an advnce, for all we know, or a purchased Mercedes for book-signing travel. Second, and more importantly, that “once expenses” should be IF expenses are covered. Reissuing that bullshit in its proper category isn’t going to help. In my opinion, the only difference between it and toilet paper is that toilet paper is useful.

NHSparky

He “has respect” for us, provided we buy his bullshit books.

Sorry Larry, no. Just no. If I am to give to wounded vets, I’ll do it directly, and not go through a guy who couldn’t tell the truth if it sat on his face and wiggled.

Ex-PH2

Expenses? Amazon charges those right off the top. Print royalties are 35%. Digital royalties are 70%. The only out-of-pocket charge to an aspiring author is a $25 fee for inclusion in the expanded distribution list, and it is not a requirement, just another option.

WHAT EXPENSES, ANDREW? Which ones, besides the cost of those bottles of booze you’re hanging onto? Try to do a better job of lying next time. Then nobody can find the holes in your silly stories.

Dear Author,

You said, “went the extra mile.”

Wrong. Anyone can go an extra mile for a pack of smokes and porno magazine.

You are a jackass!

I won’t be reading scuttlefu@k of untrue heroics of a bullsh!t artist penned by an amature.

Dudeist_Priest

Amazon bombing this book and blogs like this are working. This guy is a total tool.

Sounds to me like he’s ready to put out another book of nothing more then bullshit, and this is his way to tell us he’s sorry, sorry, yeah,!!!!!! sorry bullshit, I would’nt one of his books to send to a blind person, fact is, I’d give anything to meet this joker face to face, I’d give him something to write about. Enough said.

Shorter: if you don’t eat all my profits with a lawsuit, I’ll donate $2 to in your name to help mentally disabled vets… like yourself

OWB

No. You are not now and never intended to honor anyone, much less the veteran community. Mr. Rifkin, all you have established here is your continuing plan to remain a self-serving jerk.

Here’s a clue: writing lies that you claim to be truth is no way to “honor the respect due to all veterans,” whatever that means.

Does Hallmark make a card for that?

Just An Old Dog

A 4th rate hack trying to do damage control. He’s about as good at that as he is fact checking. I’m not buying that he is donating a damn things to veteran’s groups. He can go straight-legged to hell.

NHSparky

@8–yes, they do, but you just can’t find one that says “gay” in it.

Although they might still make one that says, “Dear assmunch douchetool fuckstick.”

Even his book reviews are lies. Barnes an noble and good reads.com have all the same 5 star reviews verbatim, from different posters. Facebook page has over 1000 likes but they wont show the posts from people that know the book is fake. What a bunch of douches…

Ex-PH2

Yeah, those 5-star reviews all sound the same, don’t they? Such enthusiasm, without the slightest reference to the real flaws in the sorry story.

I have to say that as much as I love purple writing, even this effort is wasted on me. There are too many mistakes in it.

I especially like the review from the kid who was curious about joining the military and found this book. Hes never heard of black hawk down, band of brothers, we were soldiers. No never decided to try and pick up any of those. It had to be reaper 6. Starship troopers has more factual military information in it…

Andrew Rafkin is an aider and abetter of the Stolen Valor Syndrome via Larry Fitzgerald. Money earned via lies. I cannot be more succinct than that. Don’t fall for Rafkin’s red herrings. He pissed me off more with this response. Unbelievable!

Mark F

Dear Mr. Rafkin,

1. Besides the MoH line, the “…nine additional Purple Hearts…” line had me in tears, I was laughing so hard. How would SGT (er, um, PFC) Fitzgerald even be able to function? The most PHs awarded to a single individual is, in fact, nine. That honor would go to Sgt. Albert Ireland, USMC. He earned his awards over the course of TWO entire wars- WWII and Korea. I’m actually quite surprised that Fizgerald or you didn’t edit the Wiki page on PH recipients. So, I guess GEN Westmoreland was counting every time a branch rubbed up against our dear Priva- er- “Sergeant” Fitzy.

2. If this is truly a fictional account, why would you use a real individual as your main character?

3. Mr. Rafkin, don’t just sh2oot an e-mail off and close your eyes. Come on here and defend your honor. If you truly had no knowledge of Fitzy’s lies, or you at least truly intended this to be fictional (again, why use a real person?), why not come to TAH and defend your work?

I’m sure you’re keeping track of this posting.

I’m sorry, Andrew. I spelled your last name wrong in my last comment, above this one. “Rifkin” would be the accurate spelling- but then, you don’t care much for accuracy when it comes to writing, do you? Take it easy, Rif-Raf.

“New True Vietnam Era Military Biography, Reaper 6 Reaches Top 5 On Amazon.com”

http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-966372

Andrew Rifkin, I don’t care what you say and write- you are now officially linked with Larry “The Liar” Fitzgerald- a Stolen Valor Perpetrator.

Smitty

Anyone that has any experience in the army could see a flaw just off the title. Has anyone ever known an NCO with a ‘6’ call sign? cant say about back in vietnam, but i know now that all ‘6’ call signs are the commander at what ever level now, from plt all the way up.

Hondo

The book was published as a true story. It is ridiculous bullsh!t. The author knew or should have known it was ridiculous bullsh!t. It’s therefore difficult to come to any other conclusion than that the author was a money-grubbing, lying jackass who willingly was a party to spreading ridiculous bullsh!t stories for profit.

G-F-Y, Rifkin. (Link is NSFW/around small children or prudes).

ATTENTION ON DECK: ANDREW RIFKIN IS AT IT AGAIN!!!

Amazon’s Top 5? Oh, hell no! Amazon’s best sellers list does not include even a vague reference to a book titled ‘Reaper 6’, nor is there a book with any of those words IN the title on Amazon’s best seller list. The closest title with to that reference is the late, great J. D. Salinger’s ‘Catcher In the Rye’, which uses the word ‘CATCHER’ not ‘reaper’.

The Top 5 are a book by Rush Limbaugh, a Charles Krauthammer book, another ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ volume, ‘Killing Jesus’, and ‘Pioneer Woman Cooks: A Year of Holidays’. The whole ‘Ender Quintet’ set – all Ender’s Game stories – is at #15.

Here’s the link, so you can peruse the top 100 on Amazon’s best seller list: http://www.amazon.com/best-sellers-books-Amazon/zgbs/books/

So Rafkin, you can quit lying your sorry ass off. Anyone with a working brain cell can check Amazon’s best seller list in the blink of an eye. No matter how much crap you try to foist on what you think is the stupid, unsuspecting public, you cannot lie your lying ass way out of this.

You lose again, clowndog.

A Proud Infidel

My idea of what to do with all the printed copies would be to put ’em in a shredder and recycle them into toilet paper!

Club Manager

As a non-SF paper shaker NCO clerk in CINCPAC J3A3 with a serious security clearance, I recognize the book for the lie it is, as obviously do the SF types. We had lots of boots on the ground (Prairie Fire and Daniel Boone) that saw a lot of action and received deserved decorations. Although I was an NCO reporting directly to the four star in a couple of assignments, the reporting was through the chain of command starting with my NCOIC. Maybe that’s what dickweed is saying. The bullshit never ends does it?

The author doesn't care

There are two veterans (living) that served with Fitzgerald. The author knows this and ignores the fact that they can prove Larry is a liar. Also the roster of Fitzgerald in MP school exist and the roster when he went to Fort Hood after NAM and that shows him as a SP4 (E-4). The same as the roster of the 3-5 Air Cav (on line on the 3-5 Air Cav website).
