John Kerry’s “Munich moment”

| September 3, 2013

On Saturday, John Kerry compared Bashar al-Assad, the ruler of Syria to Hitler and Saddam Hussein (but I thought Hussein was a benevolent leader who deserves to still reign over Iraq according to the Democrats) because Assad used chemical weapons. Today, Kerry told House Democrats that they are having a “Munich moment” in deciding whether to strike at and punish, Syria for their alleged use of chemical weapons.

Kerry’s derisive comments on Assad and his reference to the 1938 Munich agreement between Adolf Hitler and British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain — after which Chamberlain infamously declared it would lead to “peace for our time” — showed the hard line the White House is taking in its drive for congressional approval of the Syrian resolution. Top administration officials argue that a failure by the United States to respond to the alleged use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime will only lead to more violence and instability in the region.

So much use of Nazi-related hyperbole. Especially since those same people railed against the Nazi hyperbole when used against Hussein’s regime. I think the Democrats’ Munich Moment came with the three Congressmen on the roof of Saddam Hussein’s palace claiming he was more trustworthy than the President, back in 2003. And if Assad is Hitler, why aren’t we trying to remove him power as a stated goal instead of just “punishing” him? We “punished” Hussein for 12 years and accomplished nothing.

Or this could be a Munich Moment in 2009 when Kerry was lobbying for his current job;

Another Munich Moment in 2007 when the Bush Administration was trying to isolate Assad and Pelosi was trying to engage Assad;

Pelosi's Munich moment

Kerry also said that Israel, America’s closest ally in the region, backed the need for a U.S. military response.

Since when did what Israel wanted ever matter to this administration?

@46: Didn’t John F-ing Kerry (did you know he was in Vietnam?) commit treason by secretly meeting with, and attempting to negotiate with, the North Vietnamese delgation in Paris while still an Officer in the United States Navy? Since you were a supposed Vietnam war protester, you would have been all over that and you, yourself, were probably privy to that information. Yet, you did nothing and probably approved of it, which makes you complicit in conspiracy to commit treason!! That’s it, I’m calling the Feds!!

@51 Old Trooper, if vnwarprotestor was EVER alive during the 60s or 70s, then I’m the Queen of England and all of you are my Knights Errants.

@52, I always figured you were Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and that you were kind of bored in Buckingham Palace, and decided to join in the commenting fun here by posing as a young lass from the American Mid-West 🙂

@53 – CH, I love you, too.

I just keep thinking of the mistakes that LBJ made between 1964 and the end of his presidency. And we got Nixon, good old paranoid and vengeful Tricky Dick, out of it.

You can’t blame me for wondering if we’re about to face the same thing again, only we don’t have an angy GOP guy waiting in the wings. Do we?

@54: Nah, after the catastrophic eight years of obamaoreign, I figure the American public will urgently need some light comedic relief, and will vote in: JOE BIDEN!!! Ain’t democracy great?

How about we just pass on the next scheduled election and not have a chief executive? And Congress can just stay home and the Supreme Court can just STHU. I can dream, can’t I?

Ex-PH2

2/17 AirCav, the lights are on now, and nobody’s home.

We should sit back and watch the fireworks to come.

@46: your Casey comment was so obviously and ridiculously stupid it didn’t merit a reply.

The USS Liberty incident also doesn’t, but for different reasons. Israel admitted they attacked the USS Liberty, so your saying “the Israelis attacked the USS Liberty” is nothing but restating common knowledge.

Whether you buy the Israeli’s public explanation or not is a different story. I’m not sure I do; but I haven’t seen anything about it that’s not publicly available (and wouldn’t be able to discuss same if I had, obviously). What’s publicly available casts grave doubt on the Israeli explanation, but doesn’t conclusively disprove it either.

IMO that attack was probably deliberate. However, it’s also possible that the Israeli forces involved that day were simply incompetent and/or were highly fatigued after conducting round-the-clock operations for nearly 3 days. The latter doesn’t seem particularly likely, but it nonetheless might be the truth.

Fatigue may or may not make cowards, but it can certainly create fools.

@10: I’ve been to Israel a few times and believe me the women there are hot.

Twist: concur. Google “Bar Rafaeli” for visual proof.

@52: Hey, baby; I’ve never been with the Queen of England, before. How’s about you and me hooking up for some tea, crumpets, BBQ, and a little hanky panky? I’ll bring the Marvin Gaye for your Obama IPod. 😛

Last week Obama was drawing a line in the sand, this week he denies it and says Congress drew the line. Last week he says any strike would be punitive and not a regime changer, today Assad’s gotta go. Man changes stances so fast I’m gonna change his name to BOjangles.

Oh, vnwarprotester – everyone else is too polite and well bred to say it – you obviously mideastern alQuaida shill, take your sorry towelhead illiterate ass back to your 72 virgin boyfriends and fuck yourself with a giant pork dick.
