Dempsey; cuts hurt national defense
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, General Martin Dempsey, told a Senate Committee yesterday that deep budget cuts in the Defense Department are damaging our ability to respond to threats around the world, according to Reuters;
Dempsey told lawmakers that if the across-the-board cuts, which are known as sequestration, continue as required by law at a pace of $52 billion a year for the next decade, it would continue to erode military preparedness.
“We will not be able to find the money we need to achieve the level of sequestration cuts without a dramatic impact in our readiness,” Dempsey told lawmakers.
He said reductions in the size of the military force eventually would help lower costs and enable the services to improve their readiness. But at that point “you’re dealing with a smaller force … I think too small.”
Well, I have a couple of things to say about that; first, well, duh! Secondly, the President during the debates before the election assured the American people that sequestration wasn’t going to happen – those were his exact words. Yet, here we are, staring down the maw of massive cuts.
In fact, as late as March, Leon Panetta, then-Secretary of Defense, was telling the media that he wasn’t making any preparations for sequestration because he was certain that it wasn’t going to happen. I guess if the Defense Department had started planning for this instead of just taking big last minutes whacks at personnel cuts, they might have been able to save some essential spending – but at the Defense Department, their first knee-jerk reaction to budget cuts is to cut personnel costs. It’s always been that way, it’s not a recent occurrence, Personnel is the easiest thing to cut without putting much thought into it.
During the Clinton Administration, they started paying people to get out of the military. After a year or so, they realized that they’d let too many people go, and started sending out letters asking us to come back. Yeah, fat chance.
So where was Dempsey when all of this coming around the corner? Smiling and nodding his head along with the civilians. And he’s still doing it. He can go to his beach house on Nag’s Head and smile and nod at the seagulls for all the good he’s doing the Defense Department now.

Oy.
wonder how many bullets ‘n knuckledraggers we could finance with the unwanted M-1s and C17s he failed to fight, or the F16s and M1s they were going to send to the Moslem brotherhood.
Our problem is not necessarily that we don’t have enough money – it’s that it gets pissed away on BS, time after time after time.
Did these clowns just wake up from a 20 year sleep! No one in their right mind would not agree $520 billion over a decade will erode the military’s readiness. The military’s readiness is dwindling as we speak. Maybe if they start at the top of General Officers and make deep cuts it would help. We have too many in that category who are so in tune with ass kissing the POTUS when they aren’t feathering their post military nests. More boots with good training (read that as none politically correct training) and less Generals and Admirals!
What the Military and this country needed was a change in leadership in DC, but instead a bunch of idiots voted for the liar in chief again. Not that there are not just as many idiots on the other side of the aisle from the Dems either…
Who cares? As long as entitlements don’t get cut, everything else can be eliminated. At least that’s how the left looks at it.
Dempsey is a spineless weak-assed butt-sucking toadie; just the qualities obamao wants for his CJCS…
No need to confirm him at all. Any of us could have expressed that statement of the obvious for no charge!
“deep budget cuts in the Defense Department are damaging our ability to respond to threats around the world,”
Jonn, as you said, D’OH! (palm slap)
And maybe, just maybe, we need to look at how thin we’re spread around the world, responding to (non)threats. Maybe we need to pull back/out of most of the ungrateful mooslim 7th century never-gonna-be-democracies-EVER middle east countries we’re already spending too much money in.
The leftists currently in charge want more money for opulent vacations on our dime as well as as many handouts as they can give to flunkies and dropouts to buy their votes. Veterans don’t buy their line of crap, so we get our budgets and benefits cut!
Something tells me they will not save a dime, They are going to have to spend more in entitlements for the laid off trigger pullers. After all very few of them have the contacts to find cushy jobs in industry or seats on corporate boards. Of course there will be huge costs to train new trigger pullers when the shit hits the fan.
Cutting Defense isn’t a new desire of the Obama Administration. They are not a victim of the sequestration in it. They were asking for these cuts long before they even arranged for sequestration.
Yeah, a lot of links to demonstrate their history of cutting Defense, for all the wrong reasons, in all the wrong places:
