Ohio vets; don’t forget your bonus
Scott sends us a link from the Ohio Department of Veterans’ Services (.pdf file) which announces that;
Ohio has a unique way of thanking these recent veterans and those who serve. It’s the Ohio Veterans Bonus, for service given during the times of the Persian Gulf War and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
But the Ohio Veterans Bonus won’t be around forever – the deadline for Persian Gulf War era veterans to apply is December 31, 2013.
Veterans of the Iraq War era have until December 31, 2014 to apply. No deadline has been announced for veterans of the Afghanistan War era.

The bonus pays $100 a month to veterans who served in the Persian Gulf theater, or in the countries of Afghanistan or Iraq, up to a maximum of $1,000. For veterans who served elsewhere, the payment is $50 a month up to a $500 maximum. Veterans medically discharged due to injuries sustained in combat can receive $1,000, plus up to $500 for months of service elsewhere. Family members of those killed in action or who died from disease as a result of their in-theater service can receive a bonus of $5,000 plus whatever the service member was eligible for, up to a total of $6,500.
It’s not a handout – you earned it so go get it before the state wastes it on free cell phones for pimps or something.

I wonder how many suckwad posers are going to try to file for any of these “bonuses”
@1…Good point
The last sentence in the article hits it it in the 10x ring, or center of mass, depending on your vent! “It’s not a handout – you earned it so go get it before the state wastes it on free cell phones for pimps or something.” Ohio veterans: You have earned it… It’s not a handout. Ohio veterans and their family’s have already paid for this small offering for service. (BinhTuy66) On the other hand: The demokrat legislators from SanFran and SoCal, in my sad home state of Kalifornia are jumping all over this idea of the State of Ohio rewarding veterans. However, in Kalifornia, rewarding other groups that represents their cause: The legislation should have already rapidly passed on the “super majority” demockrat vote. What’s holding it up is the priorities of who gets the benefits first and how much payment in order of priorities. This still needs to be carefully sorted out. The runners up for free stuff and not in order: (1)SoCal street gangs (by percentage of kills) (2)SanFran street gangs (by percentage of kills) (3)Northern Cal and other rural gangs (by percentage of kills) NOTE: missed shots do not count for points! (4)Devoted meth lab cookers. (5)Devoted meth lab users. (6)Commercial pot growers on welfare. (7)Commercial, or recreational full time pot users, what’s a job? On welfare anyway. (8)Those who transport illegal aliens and drugs into the state. (9)Those that register illegal aliens to vote. (10)Illegal aliens that don’t want to work (freebies are good enough)… Plus residents that feel the state (taxpayers) owe them a living. (You should come here to see them. They do live and vote. Demcok of course! (11)The 50%+ of Kalifornians who deem it above their dignity to work because this state will pay them to watch their big screens. (12)Many other wannabee’s too many to list! (13) Gay-Les pride, yes they’ve suffered a lot of shell shock (PTS) while trying to insult average citizens. I guess the sad thing and parody of all this is a couple years ago (before the onbama phones became available) a Vietnam vet friend sent… Read more »
I love this story. From what I’ve read, Ohioans have a tradition of doing thjis and have provided bonuses for WW I, WW II, Korea, and Vietnam Veterans. And IT IS the citizenry who is to be thanked, not the politicians. This bonus was a bond measure. Proof of Ohio residency at the time of service entry and proof of current Ohio residency are required. For the Fallen, it is their residency at the time of entry into service–NOT their survivors–that controls. This is an important item b/c some survivors may think that b/c they never lived or do not now live in Ohio, that they are ineligible.
As an Ohioan (who also got the bonus), I was proud of my state when it was approved with an overwhelming majority. They actually have a pretty good system in place where it will get paid quickly, about 2-3 months from the day they receive it.
I like the fact the towns here give property tax breaks to qualifying veterans. The amount varies from town to town, but $200-300/year is the norm. Granted, when you’re paying $6-7K/year it’s not a huge percentage, but it’s a damn nice gesture at least that adds up.

Pennsylvania has the same sort of thing but the deadline is 31AUG2015.
@7. That applies only to Gulf service (SWAM) between 2 Aug 1990 and 31 Aug 1991.
