Fraud arrested for faking sons’ military deaths

| January 28, 2013

TSO sends a link to the story out of Post Charlotte, FL about Shirley Ann Duncan who was scamming the locals by claiming that she lost her four sons in the global war against terror;

NBC-2.com WBBH News for Fort Myers, Cape Coral

According to CCSO, detectives learned Duncan took pictures of her son in uniform from his Facebook page and presented it to the church to perpetrate the fraud.

She also told church members in September that her three sons were killed in action and the fourth son was not expected to live — and later that he died on October 23rd.

She also provided documentation of at least one of the deaths in the form of a phony letter from the Secretary of War signed by a General who was found to have been deceased for over 50 years.

“I received a phone call from Nick and we had a conversation and he confirmed saying yes, I am alive,” said April Hellinger, Community Life Center.

Way to go, Mom.

According to Author John R. Satterfield, one January morning a fellow whose sons were in service arose and prepared to go to work. Before he left his house, a car arrived carrying three men. They got out and walked to the fellow’s door. All were in uniform. Said one to the man, “I have some news for you about your boys.” “Which one?” asked the man. “I’m sorry,” came the reply. “All five.”

The date was January 12, 1943. The man was Mr. Thomas Sullivan. I cannot help but wonder if Shirley Duncan has ever heard of the Sullivan Brothers. It hurts to even think about what she did.

I can’t get the video to load on my computer so it could say on there, but did her sons know anything about this?

“On Jan. 24, detectives met with Duncan who admitted to telling the church group she had four sons killed in the war, collected money offered by the church, presented the bogus death notification letter, but, denied any wrong doing.”

Best part is that she has only two sons, and only one is in the military at Ft. Knox and he called the police after he was contacted by church members. Hopefully he was adopted.

Talk about denial:”On Jan. 24, detectives met with Duncan who admitted to telling the church group she had four sons killed in the war, collected money offered by the church, presented the bogus death notification letter, but, denied any wrong doing.”

@4: “’I received a phone call from Nick and we had a conversation and he confirmed saying yes, I am alive,’” said April Hellinger, Community Life Center.”

Nick is one of the sons, Twist.

Just look at her! She is so believable.

1. That, “I just finished a half spoon of heroin” look.

2. And the letter from the War Department …

3. Rumors abound that she was working on a screenplay, “Saving Private Duncan”.

What other evidence do you guys need?

I can’t see the video either, but it sure is slowing things down on the old machine here. I totally ‘get’ the Army(?) son’s perspective, though. The military is an outstanding way to get out of a bad family situation. My crazy mother sure played no small part in my decision to join up. There was a command misunderstanding about the whole failure to write/call/visit thing once–ah, memories.

AirCav-imagine you were the family described in this column by Mark Steyn http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1840539/posts

“In my local cemetery, there’s a monument over three graves, forebears of my hardworking assistant, though I didn’t know that the time I first came across them. Turner Grant, his cousin John Gilbert and his sister’s fiance Charles Lovejoy had been friends since boyhood and all three enlisted on the same day. Charles died on March 5, 1863, Turner on March 6, and John on March 11. Nothing splendid or heroic. They were tentmates in Virginia, and there was an outbreak of measles in the camp.

For some reason, there was a bureaucratic mixup and the army neglected to inform the families. Then, on their final journey home, the bodies were taken off the train at the wrong town. It was a Saturday afternoon and the stationmaster didn’t want the caskets sitting there all weekend. So a man who knew where the Grants lived offered to take them up to the next town and drop them off on Sunday morning.

When he arrived, the family was at church, so he unloaded the coffins from his buggy and left without a word or a note to anyone. Imagine coming home from Sunday worship and finding three caskets waiting on the porch. Imagine being young Caroline Grant, and those caskets contain the bodies of your brother, your cousin and the man to whom you’re betrothed.”

Thank God for Casualty assistance officers (this woman is toejam).

Squirrels in the attic for sure with this one.

@#3, 2/17, I remember reading about that in a WWII history book. If I’m correct, the USS Sullivan was named in their honor, and that led to sibling males not being allowed in theater simultaneously.

@13, Pinto: More like she has a LOT of bats in her belfry!!

NOW HEAR THIS:

The proper name is USS THE SULLIVANS.

There was a DD and a current DDG.

THAT IS ALL!

Last Brother Home

As a brother who did lose a family member to war, a story like this pisses me off to know end. It is almost as bad as some people in my state who committed identity fraud by using the information of service members killed in the current era conflicts to attain credit and what not. I hope this women gets a significant penalty for this crap.

And in case anyone has questions about my qualifications, they can look my actual name up: Don Gaunky. They can also look up the family member who died: Anthony “Alex” Gaunky

@ 16 Your brother was a good young man.

Your family flies with the Eagles … don’t let the turkeys get you down!

Army Pfc. Anthony A. Gaunky, 19, of Sparta, Wisconsin.
Gaunky died at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany, of injuries sustained in Bayji, Iraq, on November 17, 2005 when a local national crossed the median and struck his HMMWV during convoy operations. He was assigned to the 3rd Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Died on November 18, 2005.

So I did a little more and found a great story about a true American family.

Thanks Don for popping your head in here!

Mobed out of McCoy in 2009. Really like that part of Wisconsin.

Virtual Insanity

I wonder if a strong punch to the head would reset her CPU.

CI Roller Dude

Wow, if the US military only knew that the first three sons had died in combat, they would have sent a Ranger unit to save her 4th son at all cost…they maybe they could have made a movie about him…calling it “Saving Private your mom is a crack whore”

A_Proud_Infidel

@15: ROGER Master Chief, I stand corrected.
