LoHud removes map of gun owners
Dominick and Hondo sent us links to the story that the Journal News of the Lower Hudson River region has removed their interactive map to the homes of legal gun owners in their region. They claim that it’s not because they were scared or anything, but because they’ve made their point and the map is beginning to become inaccurate;
The newspaper wasn’t caving to public pressure, and the decision wasn’t an acknowledgment that it made a mistake, Hasson said. In fact, she said, many community members applauded publication of the permit data.
“Our decision to do so is not a concession to critics that no value was served by the posting of the map in the first place,” Hasson said.
“Nor is our decision made because we were intimidated by those who threatened the safety of our staffers. We know our business is a controversial one, and we do not cower,” Hasson said.
“But the database has been public for 27 days and we believe those who wanted to view it have done so already. As well, with the passage of time, the data will become outdated and inaccurate,” she said.
Yeah, false bravado. They had no real point to begin with. If they were really brave, they’d publish an interactive map to the homes of people with unregistered weapons. That would take take some real journalistic skills, though, and we won’t be seeing any of that coming out these folks whose only skill is filing a FOIA to get the names of people who have no intention of breaking any laws.
I bet they keep their armed guards.
Too late. One house has already been burglarized.
And what happens when a gun owner moves, takes guns with, and the new homeowner does not have guns but his house is still noted by criminals as a gun owner’s home… and he’s hit by criminals?
Too little, too late, and not one nod to a sense of responsiblity.
How ’bout they provide real customer service by printing large day glo posters for their “community members”. On it will be “THIS IS A GUN FREE HOUSEHOLD” with clear concise directions to display prominently in the home owners window.
These people are a true piece of work. Shameless to a fault and as transparent and glass. I’m sure the many “community leaders who applauded” the map were greatly outweighed by the multitudes of frustrated civilians who had their privacy invaded and spoke up about it. The lawyers warning of culpability in the two robberies probably had a small influence as well.
Failure.
There is more than one name associated with The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence. Or is Ladd Everitt the only member?

EX, it’s at least two houses now. The thieves didn’t get the guns in the first house, in the second one, the thieves managed to steal the gun safe.
The Urinal News pulled the map to head off the damage from lawsuits that’ll be filed against them, otherwise they’d stand by their decision to post the map, as wrong-headed as that decision was.
I know this opposes the consensus here but I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that residential burglaries actually dropped since the publishing of the map. Burglars were probably shocked to learn how many would-be victims are armed and, to the burglars, very dangerous.
They pulled the map. Great. Kind of like cutting open a pillow in a wind storm, then trying to collect all the feathers – the information is still out there whether the map is posted or not.
Heard a brief blurb this morning that the NY legislature quickly and quietly passed a bill, after the publication of “the list,” which makes it illegal to publish such a list. Can find nothing which substantiates this claim. Anybody heard anything about this??
Never mind. Apparently it’s in the gun control bill that no one read before they passed it.

Still waiting for these tools to publish an interactive map of sex offenders, EBT abusers, etc.

This is funnysad not funnyhaha, once its posted to the interwebs anyone with access can archive/cache that information and mirror it all over the web, anyone have an idea how many times it was linked to in various articles? i imagine quite a few…IT security types are forever warning people about posting things to the interwebs because they will always be there; guess they missed that memo.
There is a website for Missouri that lists sex offenders but im unsure if its run by the state or not and if it has data for more than just this state.
The paper got a hard dose of reality when they discovered how many CCW people were LEO or Security guards for armored car services.
You might out republicans, gun owners and just every day folks but when you endanger the police and their families you have pissed off the wrong segment of the gun owners population.
I hope everyone on that map — and those who are not listed — gives the advertisers for this paper an earful.
At least I learned I could feel a little safer in New York state than previously supposed. A lot more gun owners than I expected! That was the most irresponsible thing to publish that, I hope they get sued off the map.
also, my state has an interactive website for sex offenders. of course the law abiding citizens do not use it to do harm, there is no known case of that.
