That is still the FUNNIEST movie I have ever seen.

Moment of silence.

God speed CSM Plumley!

when he was on Carson or some other late nite show after Blazing saddles and smoking a cigar, tony randall make some comment about the smoke and told him to put it out – his response was to tell the little poofer he was big and tough enough to smoke wherever he damn well pleased, blew smoke in his face and flicked ashes on hi,

I looked at CSM Plumley’s wikipedia entry and it says that he is a Korean war veteran. However, in the picture that accompanies the article he is not wearing any decoration having to do with that conflict. He does have a third award CIB and WWII and Vietnam medals, as well as an Armed Forces Expeditionary medal which would account for the third award of the CIB. Unless anyone mistakes me, I am only suggesting that his wikipedia entry might be incorrect in that regard.

Rest in Peace.

TSO, the source is his Granddaughter

@68W: During Korea, CSM Plumley was assigned to the 187th RCT

Lucky-thanks, I was googling around looking for other sources to put in his wiki entry and found a biography of him by a USASMA student that confirms that.

It’s his choice whether or not he wants to wear or not wear decorations, just seemed odd, though he isn’t wearing any combat stars on his jump wings in that picture either and he is also entitled to them.

Twist

Apparantly people have also been calling the hospice and are saying that the hospice confirmed it. Take that with a grain of salt though.

Country Singer

I put in a inquiry with one of the local (Columbus) TV stations to see if they can confirm.

Any time 68W! It’s always sad to see a three war Vet go, they are a rarity. My VFW Post had one, who joined the Army in 1934, and was captured in North Africa. He was an INF BDE commander in Vietnam, and hated not getting trigger time there, until he was reminded that if he, as a COL had to pull the trigger it was bad news.

Lucky: one of the funniest takes on that I’ve ever read was by the late Asa Baber, who served as a Marine officer in SEA and later wrote for Playboy. In one of his columns, he related an incident where he and his men ended up in a firefight. If I recall correctly, Barber was a Lieutenant at the time.

In shooting the breeze with his men afterwards, one asked him if he’d gotten off a shot. His response was that he’d drawn his pistol and thought about it, but realized that if he fired he’d have to clean it – so he didn’t. His men guffawed.

Barber’s larger point was that his responsibility was to direct the battle, and fight in it only as a last resort – because if he was pulling the trigger himself, he’d have a hard time directing the others doing the shooting.

RIP, Mr. Karras. And RIP as well, Mr. Baber.

Hondo, Hahahahaha! This is true!

In honor of CSM Plumlee, please allow me to tell one of my favorite paratrooper jokes: There was a paratrooper reunion and all of them were standing around talking about how many jumps they had, “I’ve got 50 jumps,” one said. “Oh yeah? I’ve got 100 jumps,” said another. “Big deal,” said a third, “I’ve got 250 jumps.” One old man was sitting quietly off to himself so the others asked him, “Hey, old timer-how many jumps do you have?” “Only five,” he replied. They all laughed, “Only five?” “Yes,” said the old man, “only five-North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Normandy and Belgium.”

The source in that post, is none other than Joe Galloway HIMSELF. I’d think he would know if the CSM passed…

#19: My best friend ever (RIP) was a CPT Co Commander in C/2/327 in one of their major battles. He never fired his weapon in 2 RVN tours (1/101(Sep) and as an Adviser). Said he had troopers to fire weapons…his job was to tell them where to fire. BTW: Earned the DSC for that action. Link: http://www.knottkentuckykinfolk.com/heritage_hall_bios/woods_luther.htm

Re Mongo. RIP. That is the best movie of all times. Don’t know how many times I’ve seen it. It probably could not be filmed today.

Adirondack Patriot

Alex Karros is indeed part of a dying breed of people that our children and children’s children may never know:

Someone who was actually employed in Detroit.

Three letters say all that’s necessary about your friend, SJ: DSC. But his comment proves him wise as well as a hero.

Sad to see that he passed so young; my condolences.

Ex-PH2

The only guy who could open a bus door with his fingernails is gone.

And I can’t remember which movie that was.

Alex Karas was a helluva football player–back in the day when football was balls and brawn, not speed and quickness. He was a helluva funny man too. He was legendary for hating kickers, thought they were worthless and underserving of being included as members of a football team. And this was in the days before the soccer style arrived! I always wondered what became of him after he played Mongo in one of the funniest movies ever made. (Work, work, work work. Hello boys!)

Veritas Omnia Vincit

Candygram for Mongo…..RIP

Just Plain Jason

A sad day indeed…

El Marco

Alex Karras. Nicest guy off the field, meanest SOB on it.

RIP.

Bubblehead Ray

I saw Blazing Saddles in the theatre when it was first released. I laughed so hard I damn near threw up when I first saw him deck that horse. Still is one of the funniest movies ever.

RIP Alex, you will be remembered forever as a “pawn in game of life”.

NHSparky

Damn, they’re all going…couldn’t have been THAT old? Could he?

“No Mongo…DOWN! Here Mongo, SMELL!”
