I’ve got a question about the hat. The black hat anyway.

Who is allowed to wear it? Is it a “once a cav always a cav” thing, or how about “once attached to a cav” thing? My google-fu turned up all kinds of insainty so now I’m curious.

When I die bury me with my spurs, sabre and my stetson. You are never not cav once you’ve crossed over into the true way. There are no ex-cav guys, just old troopers not currently on patrol. If you have earned your spurs or your stetson then you wear it till you dismount at Fiddlers Green. Unless your in one of those wretched infantry units where they suffer from dreadful inferiority complexes which are heightened by the symbols of the virulent cav trooper. In those cases we must show mercy to our poor brethren and not make them feel any worse.

Long live the regiment!

Stand to, SGT Kane. Your official information is right here via the 1st Cavalry Division Association

Al T.

Been way cooler if they had a modern Cav platoon (M1s, Bradleys, etc., etc.) come busting around the bend for the last scene of the video….

Ask and ye shall receive Al T. Garryowen!

Oh man I have an unnatural love for my Stetson. If my house was on fire it is the one thing I would make sure to save (aside from the wife and dogs).

1stCavRVN11B

Yep, looking forward to seeing you Zero! Haven’t seen ya since the GoE stand against IVAW WSI II. Might have to introduce you to some gator wrestling.

B 2/5 Cav & D 1/12th Cav RVN

Yep. I’d run in a burning house for my Stetson for sure. Scouts out!

Hi guys long time lurker, 1st time poster. I just want to see if I understand that MOI correctly, I don’t want to get called out on being a mitty. I was attached to to both the 1st CAV, and the 278th CAV in Iraq 04/05. I am entitled to wear both as combat patches. I made at least 2 trips outside the wire on the ground. If I understand the policy correctly, I can wear the Hat and Gold spurs but not Silver spurs because I never did A “Spur Ride”. Am I correct?

68W58

Lurkersteve-were you F troop 278? I was HHT 2nd squadron.

The Spur ride must be done to qualify for either set of spurs. I spent 3 years with Cco 1-8 Cav and was in Desert Shield/Storm and I don’t qualify for any spurs…I never did a spur ride 🙁

OWB

Thanks, Street! Got there from the other link you posted.

And thanks, Zero, for giving me a moment this morning. You’ve got the sinuses acting up now.

Guess my Dad talked more about his Cav days than any other. That would be the 7th Cav back in the early 30’s. It must have been something. He was a bandsman, so they had instruments to carry and play as well as all the other gear. He had an amazing horse.

68W58

Old Tanker-it was my understanding that a combat tour supersedes a traditional “spur ride” and entitles those of us who were in combat with a Cav unit to wear our spurs (though I never get to wear the spurs themselves any more, you will get my Stetson from my cooling corpse). I know some of the units printed up certificates, but our squadron didn’t.

lurkersteve

68W58-I was with the UAV platoon attached to HHT at FOB…Caldwell? If I remember correctly. I never really gave the Hat and Spurs much thought, I was Infantry in my youth, I was just curious.

My “buddy” who told me about the disdain they had for the 1st Cav during WWII and occupation of Japan. This disdain carried on after WWII onto Ft. Campbell. There was a painting in the 11th Airborne’s BOQ of Custer being surrounded and the 11th parachuting in the background!I tease him because the 11th was inactivated then resurrected as the 11th Air Assault… then re-flagged as the 1st Cav! It kills him when they attempt to allow 1st Cav in the 11th Airborne Association.

“The 1st Cav…you mean the patch with the horse they never rode… the line they never crossed, and the color of their true colors? ”
There was another story and old 11th guy told me when in Japan on occupation duty. The 1st Cav guy was in the latrine going number two when he was stuck without TP. The Cav guy hollered for some assistance and the 11th paratrooper smartly said- use your patch. The fight was on!

Take a look at c(4) on page 5 of the MOI Streesweeper posted at number 4. The spur ride is a requirement unless there is a later revision to that MOI that says otherwise…

It’s called jealousy, we’re used to it….

68W58

Old tanker-I’m covered under paragraph 4.C.(4).(c), so I’m not worried. That MOI explicitly says that it only applies to 1st Cav troops and that other Cav commanders can make other specifications. If combat isn’t enough to satisfy them, then they have too high an opinion of he spur ride.
