7 Americans dead in helicopter crash in Afghanistan

| August 16, 2012

The Washington Post is reporting that 7 Americans are among the 11 dead in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan this morning. The Taliban claims they shot it down, but the crash is under investigation by NATO;

“The crash resulted in the deaths of four ISAF service members, three United States Forces-Afghanistan service members, three members of the Afghan National Security Forces, and one Afghan civilian interpreter,” it said. The United States has about 90,000 troops in Afghanistan, about half attached to ISAF and the rest under distinct U.S. command.

A spokesman for the Taliban, Qari Mohammad Yousuf, said the militants shot down the helicopter, which he said had arrived in Shah Wali Kot as part of an operation against the insurgents.

“We have weapons that can hit aircraft,” he said by phone when asked to specify the type of the weapon.

You’re being a little defensive there, Yousuf.

Rest in peace, my brothers in arms. May God comfort surviving friends and families.

The Guardian article here has a tiny bit more info on this tragedy. My thoughts go out to the friends and families of the lost.
