We know what they think of veterans now

| September 13, 2008

Well, if we didn’t know before, we know now what the Democrats think of veterans. From Cuffy Meigs we see how Obama is willing to make fun of John McCain because of the injuries he suffered after ejecting from his aircraft after being shot down (hint: think about that for a second. You’re cruising along a the speed of sound and suddenly stop and fall a few thousand feet…it’s not the cakewalk it looks like on TV) and beaten by his captors and refused medical attention for a couple of years. Now he can’t manipulate his fingers to type…har-di-har-har.

Wesley Clark said back in June that McCain‘s time as a prisoner doesn’t give any special insight to being president. Maybe John McCain’s time as a prisoner didn’t make him presidential material, but the training he got at Annapolis and the years after his capture as a military officer give him a leg up on a “community organizer” as far as leadership and decision-making…well, to every one except a community organizer.

And did I mention that Track Palin was arrested in a vandalism ring a few years ago and part of his plea deal was to go in the Alaska National Guard? Evidence? We don’t need no stinkin’ evidence. Everyone knows that the military is just jam-packed with criminals.

And idiots. John Kerry said so

I remember when Bill Clinton was trying to balance the budget, one of the first things he did was start a program for veterans to pay for their health care (called TriCare) – this was after the Democrat Congress doubled the copay for everyone (including recruiters and ROTC instructors who were stationed away from military healthcare facilities). Then Bill Clinton kicked veterans 65 and over off of TriCare and put them on Medicare to save more money (George Bush gave it back, by the way).

But, hey, the Democrats accepted a letter from the IVAW, so I guess we can trust them to take care of vets now, right?

Wondering No More [Jonah Goldberg]

Yep. The day after 9/11, as part of its “get tough” makeover, the Obama campaign is mocking John McCain for not using a computer, without caring why he doesn’t use a computer. From the AP story about the computer illiterate ad:

“Our economy wouldn’t survive without the Internet, and cyber-security continues to represent one our most serious national security threats,” [Obama spokesman Dan] Pfeiffer said. “It’s extraordinary that someone who wants to be our president and our commander in chief doesn’t know how to send an e-mail.”

Well, I guess it depends on what you mean by “extraordinary.” The reason he doesn’t send email is that he can’t use a keyboard because of the relentless beatings he received from the Viet Cong in service to our country. From the Boston Globe (March 4, 2000):

McCain gets emotional at the mention of military families needing food stamps or veterans lacking health care. The outrage comes from inside: McCain’s severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes. Friends marvel at McCain’s encyclopedic knowledge of sports. He’s an avid fan – Ted Williams is his hero – but he can’t raise his arm above his shoulder to throw a baseball.

In a similar vein I guess it’s an outrage that the blind governor of New York David Paterson doesn’t know how to drive a car. After all, transportation issues are pretty important. How dare he serve as governor while being ignorant of what it’s like to navigate New York’s highways.

Further on in the same NRO piece:

Oh one last point for now: Lord knows I think the chicken-hawk arguments are stupid. And I don’t think the fact that Obama never served in the military should count against him in and of itself. But how stupid is it for the Obama campaign to claim that McCain is unqualified to be president because he can’t grasp cyber-security issues based on the fact he has never sent an email when the McCain campaign can just as easily say Obama can’t understand first order national security issues because he’s never fired a rife, flown a plane, commanded men in battle, or faced an enemy? I mean which prepares someone to be commander in chief better, hitting “send” on AOL or fighting a war?

Braging just a little, I have a flag from that unit with the banner.

If McCain really gets emotional about soldiers on food stamps and veterans needing health care, why doesn’t he do anything to help them?

Jonn wrote: Well, let’s all vote for him and find out. I know veteran care at the VA has improved about 300% in the last eight years so I don’t know why you keep harping on that unless you think it just sounds easy to accept.

A/S,

Stop with the “underfunded VA” BS already.

You have no clue, absolutely no clue as to $$$/patient.

The WWII vets are dying off in boatloads and the curve has started downward like a roller coaster.

The IVAW doesn’t really give a crap. You’re just looking for a way to look good while standing around.

Army Sergeant

I am glad that VA care has improved 300%. I won’t even question your figure, Jonn. But it’s still not good enough, and it’s not uniformly across the board. Why do we still have veterans taking years to get their cases through? Why do we still have homeless veterans waiting months to get seen?

If the VA is in fact fully funded (which I don’t believe it is) then why are these things happening? IVAW does in fact give a crap. I call out VA facilities when they do good things as well as bad. Nick Morgan is being given excellent reconstructive surgery by the Philadelphia VA, and I gave them their due in my blog about it. But there are a lot of facilities that are not taking care of veterans, and I believe in keeping the heat on them.
