DoD authorizes wear of uniform at pride activities

| July 19, 2012

From NBC’s affiliate Channel 7 in San Diego comes the news that the Pentagon has authorized military members to wear their uniforms at the gay pride activities scheduled in San Diego this weekend;

“Based on our current knowledge of the event and existing policies,” the memo read, “we hereby are granting approval for service members in uniform to participate in this year’s parade, provided service members participate in their personal capacity and ensure the adherence to Military Service standards of appearance and wear of the military uniform.”

Local commanders previously had the authority to grant military personnel to wear their uniforms. However, approval at a higher level was granted “now since the event has garnered national media attention,” the memo stated.

So the Pentagon has capitulated to political pressure from the “national media attention”. I’m sure that something will happen that will make them come to regret this buffoonery, but they have to remember that Big Pentagon sanctioned it.

Thanks to Jeff for the link.

And in case it is not clear, I am presuming that at this mythical “black pride” event you are planning to have X-rated activities which most people would not be comfortable having their children watch? I am not aware of there being any such events involving either blacks or the Irish exclusively, but perhaps there are.

Yea, I’ve never seen a Black Pride parade that included assless chaps.

@52 Dammit, sarge, would you please post a warning ahead of making comments like that?

Nearly spilled iced tea on my keyboard. How would I explain that to the guy who just did repairs to my computer?

Sad…but not unexpected.

I don’t care if these men like Dick…I care that somehow people made this such a big deal. Double and triple and quadruple etc standards are here to stay.

Sad…is it to much to ask for a man to behave like a soldier in uniform? A professional one at that. I got the old no tongue tag with your wife speech on the plane right before we excited after a 12 month combat tour. How much you wanna bet that gay dudes are allowed to perform a little softcore infront of the entire unit after their tour?

To add to my post in 54 and expand on a few others comments….we had regs on when we could be in pt uniform…regs where we could be in combat and motor pool garb…even times when we could visit the on post facilities such as dfac and px in uniform unless on duty

Hell I had a 1SG go on a hour+ tirade infront of the company because he caught a private buying food at the px less than an hour after he released us for the day…wasn’t even supposed to be doing every day shit unless it was work (duty) in the duty uniform.

Whaaat you mean only soldiering in a soldiers uniform ohh my lord whhhhhyyyyyy.

You mean like this?

Notice they had to get the huge American flag as a backdrop, as if manlove in the hangar, or on the pier, or wherever, is as patriotic as Mom, apple pie, and baseball.

Oh, but to be fair, let’s not forget the ladies:

I am intrigued to watch how this plays out. My command has not done anything other than distribute the message from the OASD.

However, according to the parade website, there is a party at one of the local bars, specifically for military members. Knowing that alcohol is a common factor in sexual assaults and that we are being scrutinized for the rate of sexual assaults in the military, this seems like a strange combination.

(If you can’t make the connection between the parade and the sexual nature of the parade, just take a look at the speakers and their topics.)

Just a question, because I’m tired of political correctness:

Does this mean that the scene in “Officer and a Gentleman”, where the DI is berating one and all for merely showing up, will have to be cut because the good sergeant mentions queers and steers? And he tells the female AVCAD that she’ll always be a second class citizen because she can’t shinny up the climbing wall? Does that have to be cut, too?

I gues no one has been to a parade that had servicemembers at it? Like St Patrick’s? http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7180/6862484836_a842117a7b_z.jpg
