Going full ‘tard with the Stolen Valor/fraud thing

| March 5, 2012

Apparently, Dunard Morris thought pretty highly of himself and his ability to commit fraud in regards to his employers, Metropolitan Urological Specialists in St Louis, MO. After getting his job by telling his potential employers that he “won” the Navy Cross while he was in the Marine Corps, he then proceeded to fleece them for hundreds of thousands of dollars, including giving himself unauthorized raises and charging meals and entertainment expenses to the group, says AdVert;

Morris, 48, St. Charles, Missouri, was indicted by a federal grand jury late Wednesday on five felony counts of mail and wire fraud and one count of stolen valor.

If convicted, mail and wire fraud carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and/or fines up to $250,000. Violation of the Stolen Valor Act carries a maximum of one year and/or fines up to $100,000. In determining the actual sentences, a judge is required to consider the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, which provide recommended sentencing ranges. Additionally, upon a finding of guilt, Morris will be subject to a forfeiture allegation, which will require the forfeiture to the government all property derived from the illegal activity.

This highlights the need for an online database of veterans that our buddy Doug Sterner was advocating in Congress last week. The existence of that database might have prevented the doctors from hiring Morris in the first place and saved them hundreds of thousands of dollars in fraud and now legal fees to recover the ill-gotten booty.

It’s about time

Sustainer

You had me at Dunard!

Ann

You’d think all the bragging would clue people in to who is a fraud. The vast majority of valor award recepients barely mention their decorations, let alone try to get piles of freebies.

CI Roller Dude

I still vote for a kick in the balls for Stolen Valor violations…but then a buddy of mine reminded me…they don’t have any balls. crap, where else can we kick them?

Yat Yas 1833

I think these asshats should have to serve their time in the brig of whatever branch they claim to have served with. As a chaser I took many a $hitbird to the brig and even though these turds had screwed up big time, they still wouldn’t stand for a poser.

fmedges

I think they should have their own combat unit filled with stolen valor guys. Send their asses to Afghan land to earn their pieces of flair.

Ann

They should be made to go to Section 60 at Arlington National Cemetary every day for a year as custodial staff wearing a shirt detailing their lies. They shoud also be made to explain and apologize to every single family member of an actual hero they encounter there.

CI Roller Dude

I like the #6 suggestion….send them all now.

streetsweeper

@ #6- And there it is….lmao!

Now, why does the government get the money from the fraudelent claims? (penalty cited above).

Shouldn’t the money be returned to those he defrauded? Why should they have to file a seperate lawsuit to re-gain that money? And if the money for some reason shouldn’t be returned there, wouldn’t it be better to give it to the Semper Fi Fund, Wounded Warriors, CMH, Fisher House, Intrepid Fund, or Special Operations Warrior Fund?

Hondo

WOTN: my guess is that the justification would likely be to reimburse the government for costs of investigation/prosecution/indigent defense/court costs. And one can make the argument that stolen valor cases defraud both valid honorees and the government (which conferred the honor in the first place) by devaluing the honors across the board.

Not saying that’s right, but it’s a justification.

Ann: please. I knew at least two folks who now RIP in Arlington. I’d really prefer not to have Arlington polluted with the stink of those who steal others’ honor.

Ann

@11 I see your point, and I have a friend there as well. I just think this guy needs to experience some groveling and self-abasement for once in his pathetic little life.

#15 Dunnard is my uncle. My entire family thinks he is a piece of sh*t. We all want the max penalty for him. How ignorant are you to assume that his family is white trash just because of his crappy actions. Just because he is a loser does not in any way reflect on the members of his family. We are extremely disgusted with the person he is! And I am extremely disgusted by your rediculous post!

Green Thumb

@16.

Deal with it.

Hondo

Anonymous (15): we’re sorry that your uncle is a POS/liar/thief/shitbird, too. But I for one am not sorry he’s in jail. He deserves that.

Anonymous

Unfortunately he is not in prison like he should be. He has been out the entire time! @17 deal with what? deal with ignorant people bashing my family because of this idiot.
