Were gonna be pretty much right back where we started?

Taliban says yes, but…

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The Taliban‘s political wing is ready to enter peace talks to end the war in Afghanistan, but the insurgents will in the meantime continue their armed struggle, the group said Thursday.

The militant movement’s emailed statement suggests that efforts to bring Afghan factions to the table are gathering momentum, but also highlights some of the roadblocks on the way to any settlement — in particular, the Taliban’s insistence that the government of President Hamid Karzai is an illegitimate “stooge” of the West.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said the militants had been fighting for the past 15 years to establish an Islamic government in Afghanistan “in accordance with the request of its people.”

There it is.

“the militants had been fighting for the past 15 years to establish an Islamic government in Afghanistan “in accordance with the request of its people.”

Yeah, I’m thinking……..NOT!

CI

Well to be fair….the Karzai regime would say the same…..

Old Trooper

@2: ? You mean Karzai wants an Islamic government, too, in accordance with the request of the people?

I’m pretty sure I haven’t heard of too many women and young girls in Afghanistan that are begging for acid in the face, or a nose chopped off, not being able to go to school, leave the house without having a male family member with, wearing drapes with a slit cut for your eyes, etc.

CI

@3 – No. I should have written that more clearly. The Karzai regime fashions itself as one with the legitimacy and support if the Afghan people.

And don’t count out the “not being able to go to school, leave the house without having a male family member with, wearing drapes with a slit cut for your eyes, etc.”

Depending on the location, and/or what warlord bought his way into a government position, it still happens.

Dogrease

They killed off the ones that don’t want an Islamic Gov.

Old Trooper

@4: That’s true.

Drama

I really don’t have a comment for the “political negotiations”, but am I alone in laughing at the thought of the Taliban emailing press releases?

Not only does it seem comical for the Taliban of all things, but i’m just waiting for the day when Ahmadinejad twitters about Israel.

So its ok to piss on corpses because they do it too? Well shit now that I know and I’m already out? WTF. I guess cutting the head off then dumping a body in a sewer where it will slowly rot away absent of any form of identification is almost like pissing on someone you shot.

There is no good faith in these talks because the enemy thinks they are winning. They still have not made a single concession or overture of any sort. It’s amazing with all the cajoling the administartion has had to do just to get them to set up an office in Qatar, they still won’t even recognize the Afghan government as a legitimate entity. Oh yeah, this looks like it could work!

Don’t I wish.
