Charity fraud?
Someone wrote to tell us about a radio host in St Louis, MO by the name of Dave Glover beseeched listeners to help Alisa Jenkins, a widowed mother who had lost her husband in Iraq about 18 months ago. The story goes like this;
Eighteen months ago, she and her children were hit with the devastating news that Anthony had been killed in action.
At this time, Alisha is struggling with the hardship of supporting her family on her own.
Their utilities have been turned off, and she is behind on her rent and car payment. She is trying to put on a brave face for her children, but has realized that they need help. Now, the most pressing issue for her and her children is being able to stay warm through the winter.
Yeah, well, it appears that, according to Department of Defense casualty lists, there has been no Major Anthony Jenkins killed in Iraq;
And it’s hard to believe that a mother could burn through $300,000 of tax free insurance money and the monthly check from the Army as well as the Social Security check for the fatherless children. I think someone ought to check up and see if she really has lung cancer, too.

Maybe her husband was Leroy Jenkins. He was last seen running solo into a room filled with bad guys on World of Warcraft…
Sounds like this would be a nifty case for any of those bored to tears Army CID agents that would rather visit you, Jonn.
Charity Fraud is a much worse crime than pretending to be a Navy Seal. It destroys the faith that a person should have in his fellow humans. Only a really stupid person wouild pretend to be a Navy Seal. Yet people pretending to need money that do not really need it is all to common becasue it pays. There was a program on BBC just the day before yesterday about women in London sending thier children out on the streets to beg. Then the program showed the houses that the mothers were living in and to call them Villas would not be an exaguration.
Still I often give money to beggars. How can a person really know what their circumstances are or how they got there. For me to give a little does not do me any harm.
The money that I give might do some good. It might do some harm by helping a person not take real productive action to turn their life around. Would it then perhaps be appropriate to flip a coin and let the Gods (fate) decide
whether or not the beggar should recieve his coin?
When a musician plays music on the street that is an easy call. Street musicians bring improve the environment of the nieghborhood.
Of course when a mother sends her children out to beg while she is living in a Villa one has a quite clear case of Parental neglect. I did not see the whole program so If I had I might have understood how the English police can allow a practice like this to continue.
Of course the police could say that the harm done to society by these neglegent mothers is too small for us to bother ourselves with. We police need to concentrate our deductive powers on the really really big destructive crimes in the one billion to seven hundred billion dollar catagory. Now those types of crimes will really catch our attention.
Actually, it’s $400K plus $100K death gratuity paid a few days after the noticiation.
When we have visitors on TDY, I always am sure to point out the apartment complex in which live several of the chronically “homeless” beggars outside the Madigan gate at Fort Lewis. Pathetic.
I think that CID should definitely pay this guy a visit. I volunteer with the Salvation Army and, especially during this time of year, we have lots of people claiming some far fetched things. Whether this guy is the id10t that started this, or whether it is the woman trying to defraud the radio station, it is illegal. It is even worse than stolen valor.
@ #5 – Sig; You referring to those “homeless” that are scoring major bucks from their chosen occupation, right? lol!
id10t(ango)… I thought my little group of guys were the only ones to use that. Do I know you, Flagwaver?
I listen to the Dave Glover Show and I was taken by the story. They raised 40K in one night. Today , the next day he came on the air and told everyone that they discovered it was not true and they were deceived. All the money was refunded. Now she does have 4 kids and she does have cancer, but she lied to get money and she wasnt even asking for just food and money to pay electric, she wanted her cable turned back one. I do have a heart , but this woman needs to be charged with fraud.
I can’t listen to Dave Glover anymore. This most recent episode over the semi-fraud charity was the final straw. My disappointment with Dave Glover been coming on for awhile. For the last fifteen years, my husband and I buy a lot of toys during Christmas time for the Marine’s Toys for Tots toy drive. Last year, we decided to drop the toys off at a location Dave Glover was sponsoring for his show. When we arrived, Tom helped my husband, son, and me unload the toys. Dave Glover NEVER lifted a finger to help us, and hardly acknowledged us. He came off as a rude snob. I was surprised and disheartened over his demeanor. I have listened to Dave Glover’s show since his early days, and all of a sudden, a usual joyous occasion for my family and me to give was turned into me being terribly sad and disappointed to realize just how shallow he had become. When I heard him pleading for this woman, Alisa, I wanted to give…but, as he went on with her tragic story, the cynical side of me kicked in and something just didn’t seem “right” about the story. The more he talked about it, the more I wondered if he had researched it thoroughly before bringing this case to his rather large audience. Sure enough, the story turned out to be a half-truth. You see, I happen to be very sensitive when it comes to helping our military families. My husband served four years in the Army and we have family and friends who have served in, and are currently serving in the military (my son is currently in the Army). I guess it’s a good thing Dave Glover realized a long time ago that he wasn’t suited to be a lawyer, as a good lawyer checks and re-checks before opening the mouth. He asked good people to donate their money to a woman who, although in desperate situation, made a decision to lie about something sacred when she didn’t need to! Sorry for the long post! One question for anyone out there….The… Read more »
