Open thread?
Every time I try an open thread, the blog goes silent, but I have to drive us back to the mountains from the big city, so I have no choice. Talk among yourselves about whatever you want to talk about without me having to provide a theme.
Besides, reading the news is distracting me from looking at the Walter Reed nurses.

So whats Obamas NCAA Picks?
Better yet, Obama’s people need to know where’s the best bar in Rio to watch the playoffs and coverage of that whole Japan thing.
No. No more Army nurses!
Last time I let one near me, it was… 1997. I was on a second tour of lovely Bosnia, and had managed to screw up my ankle.
After a week of hobbling around, and sloughing off the boss’s orders to get squared away by the docs, he said the magic four syllables: “Swedish Nurses.”
So, I hopped on the bus to the Blue Factory. An American nurse checked me in. As I was sitting on the gurney, enjoying the proximity of the fairer gender, I was approached by a Norwegian corporal.
Now as a Redleg, I can tell you this corporal would be welcome as a cannoneer in any unit, and as a noseguard for the Dallas Cowboys. So, with nothing further to do, I asked whether the corporal had been a gunner.
She said no, such jobs aren’t open to women. And proceeded to separate my foot from my ankle, and back again with a practiced snap.
Her next words were “you may not screaming now, captain. That shouldn’t have hurt too bad.”
And that was the last time I allowed a uniformed nurse near me.
How about a DUtard extra?

Do you think Obama’s campaign is going to be namby-pamby, “I’m middle of the road” and safe?
Is what we’re seeing from Obama, what we’re going to get? He seems to be a Carteresque wimp, so desperate to be loved by the independents that he’s losing respect from everyone. (But of course, he still has my vote over any Republican.)
– He didn’t take a bold stand on Wisconsin.
– He’s not speaking out forcefully about what’s wrong with the Tea Party.
– He’s not making a case for fixing our deficit by raising taxes on the wealthy.
– He’s not arguing that budget cuts will lead to job losses.
– He’s not taking a strong stand on transparency.
– He’s not even taking a strong stand on Libya.
– He’s not even taking a tough stand on oil companies as the price of gas and heating oil skyrockets.
– He’s not even taking a bold stand on Wall Street, where bonuses are back to pre-recession levels.
– He doesn’t really seem to be standing up for anyone, just trying not to make too many waves.
Frankly, he’s a bore. Maybe that’s what Americans want, but let’s remember that our boring Presidents — be it Carter, Ford, or Bush I did not fare well. I keep hoping we’ll see an Obama who leads and fights and makes a passionate and fact-based case for liberalism, but instead he seems to be, as they say, no drama.

It ain’t all about cooling the fevered brow, DaveO. And it’s always the more painful things that have to be done right now, whether the patient wants it done or not. And of all the standards that nurses have to meet, BEAUTY IS NOT ONE OF THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dave I think it is an AD vs. NG/Reserve thing. I walked around with a lung infection for a month and a half untill I saw a NG nurse practioner who finally got me fixed up.
Good news, everyone! Charlie Sheen’s warlock wagon has left the Warner Bros lot!

I think they only allow women with the condition of “banana fingers” to become corpsmen/nurses.
DaveO, that sounds like a line from one of John Ringo’s books (Ghost series). Ouch!
#4 PN: you have your standard, I have mine. Mine are certifiably lower, I’m sure 🙂
Laughing Wolf,
If it is, I’ll have to allow him to send some royalties my way 🙂
Oh well…
There she was just a walkin’ down the street singin’
Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do
Snappin’ her fingers and a shufflin her feet singin’
Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do
She looked good (looked good) She looked fine (looked fine)
She looked good she looked fine, and I nearly lost my mind.
The Cat is away. YMMV!
Silent huh?
You call those little bumps mountains?
Someone please tell me this is inaccurate. >_<
“but let’s remember that our boring Presidents — be it Carter, Ford, or Bush I did not fare well”.
I ran that through my handy-dandy lib speak translator, and got, “the cheap bastards didn’t raise my welfare payments, or buy my house, or put gas in my car”.
UpNorth,
Maybe that’s the shared sacrifice folks go on about.
Cort, this from the Marine Corps Times;
• Possible pay stoppage
Troops would miss a payday only if the shutdown continues through April 1.
Defense civilian workers would be divided into two categories. “Essential” employees would be required to report to work even though they will not be paid; “nonessential” employees would be furloughed, according to the memo.
Troops and essential civilians who report for work without pay would receive back pay when government funding is restored. But whether furloughed civilians would receive back pay could depend on whether Congress specifically authorizes that, according to congressional aides who have been doing their own shutdown planning.
The memo, prepared in early March but never formally issued as guidance, attempts to spell out what defense missions would shut down and what would stay open in the event funding stops.
• Military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan will continue, including preparations for any units scheduled for deployment.
• Operations necessary for national security, safety of human life and protection of property will continue, but operations that don’t meet one of those three criteria will be “shut down in an orderly and deliberate fashion.”
• Recruiting offices, processing centers and basic training will remain operational.
• Emergency repairs and maintenance that cannot be deferred will be done on base facilities and housing.
• Medical and dental facilities will remain open, although elective surgery and procedures will be postponed. Suicide, substance abuse counseling and crisis intervention will continue.
• Dependents schools and education centers for service members will be open for use by private agencies for courses for which payment already has been made.
• Dining halls, gyms and child care centers will stay open.
• Base exchanges may remain open because they operate using nonappropriated funds. But commissaries, which are supported by taxpayer funds, may be closed, although the memo says military personnel might be assigned to replace furloughed civilians so the grocery stores could remain open.
And the power of the Contractor shall hold sway, and they will call them Vital! and Important! for they do all the work that succeeds anyway.
It would seem there’s an “us” and “them” dust up brewing in the Corps. In a growing debate similar to the angst frequently exhibited between Army infantry soldiers and Army support soldiers, there appears to be dissent among the ranks…..
From militarytimes.com
Every Marine a Rifleman
It’s a philosophy every recruit is indoctrinated with from Day One. No matter his MOS, every Marine is trained to be capable of picking up a rifle and heading to the front.
But, in today’s operating environment, many Marines never hear the crack of an enemy rifle. That’s why some grunts want a device to distinguish them from other Marines. The best way to do that, some oh-three-hundreds say, is to reserve crossed rifles for infantrymen.
Others, however, say that threatens to erode camaraderie and rob the Corps of that which sets it apart from all other services.
Basically, even though there is a body in the chair, the Oval Office is vacant. We don’t even have the historical enjoyment of a lunatic king. We just have…nothing. My last hope is that our government will be able to continue to operate by its own momentum until we can get someone in charge that will at least TRY to make a decision once in awhile.
#19 – PN: That would be otherwise known as an “empty suit”.
Yeah, PintoNag, he’s pretty much of a nothingburger…..
That’s what happen’s when someone gets elected on empty promises and a catchy slogan. Hope and Change…I wonder what his reelection slogan is going to be? MORE AND THE SAME!
By the way, PintoNag, I just figured out what you name means…I know it is obvious. Forever I thought it was some Vietnamese thing…
A Navy veteran who also was a cop was killed this week while attempting to apprehend a domestic abuser. They’d been called to the house 23 times before. If they’d been able to make a conviction stick for real, that veteran would not be dead now.
Were you really updating while driving, Jonn??
No, and Ponsdorf found out that I don’t answer the phone while I’m driving either.

“I thought it was some Vietnamese thing…”
Really?? Cool. Personal story: I had a friend in high school who was Vietnamese. When we got ready to graduate, everyone was signing everyone else’s yearbook. She wrote what looked like a paragraph — in Vietnamese! When I saw it and asked her what she wrote, she gave me a big smile, hugged my neck, said goodbye, and disappeared in the crowd. I never did find out it said…
Outstanding! I actually passed an ambulance Tuesday night whose driver was texting.
Yeah.
@PintoNag- If you still have that yearbook you can scan the page and send it to me. I’ll translate it for you best I can.
Apparently, winning wars is no longer the objective of the US Military… it’s ‘diversity’ (of appearance). Diversity panel wants military to look like U.S. — Urges change to let women in male-only combat units Congressman Allen West had something to say about that: Allen West Rips Report Claiming Too Many White Men in Military Leadership Positions… In an interview with The Daily Caller, West, who is black, was not pleased with the report, saying that the military is not a social experiment for outside groups to impose their theories. Rather, he said, it is a merit based organization where anybody can succeed. “Everyone that comes into the military has an equal opportunity to get promoted to the next level. It is not about outside entities trying to engineer and design results and outcomes or create a sense of equal achievement and when some military diversity group writes a report saying there are too many white men on top,” West said. “It is kind of a slap in the face to those who have risen through the ranks such as four star General [Lloyd] Austin, [General] Kip Ward, many others. We don’t need these outside entities trying to design or shape a military.” ========== And this is why liberals hate the military: “it is a merit based organization where anybody can succeed.” Liberals are completely against fairness of opportunity and desire ‘fairness of results’. And even ‘results’ is misleading. Because they don’t want the military to be ‘diverse’ in order to better win wars. They want it ‘diverse’ for appearances’ sake. You see the same mentality in the union situation going on all over the nation. Unions — teachers’ unions, UAW, public unions — are not merit based organizations. Teachers’ unions especially hate the idea of being merit-based. And the election of 2008 was a prime example of this ridiculous mentality that has infected America. Barack Obama was not elected to the Presidency based on merit, but based on appearances. “First Black President”. Who cares that he and his socialist cohorts have destroyed the country, that’s not important. What is important… Read more »
