Weekend terrorism round up

| December 27, 2010

The British police rounded up twelve more terrorists this weekend and released three;

The men, five of whom were said in British news reports to be of Bangladeshi origin, were accused of offenses including reconnoitering targets, conspiracy to cause explosions and testing incendiary material. On Monday, Judge Howard Riddle ordered all nine of them to be held in prison until a further hearing on Jan. 14.

The Dutch police picked up another twelve Somalies;

Twelve men aged between 19 and 48 were arrested late on Friday after a message was received from the Dutch intelligence and security service AIVD, prosecutors said in a statement.

“The (AIVD) message reports that a number of Somalis wanted to make a terrorist attack in the Netherlands in the short term,” the prosecutors said. They did not say what the intended target was.

That’s while five more Somalis are on trial in The Netherlands.

And the Taliban kidnapped 23 Pakistani tribesman who had just met with Pakistan’s military chief

Taliban spokesman Azam Tariq says the abductions are a warning to civilians that the militants are still strong in South Waziristan, despite an ongoing military offensive.

The abductees were part of a group that welcomed army chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani to South Waziristan Dec. 7.

Intelligence officials say the militants lured the victims to a town bordering North Waziristan and then kidnapped them.

So it was a pretty busy week for police and terrorists alike. Although the New York Times notes that there haven’t been any large scale attacks in Kabul for the last seven months.

…its momentum stymied as elite American-led commandos have escalated raids against the militants’ bomb makers and logisticians.

Did anyone wake up the people in charge of Intelligence here in the U.S. and let them know. You know, so Mr. Clapper won’t make an ass of himself at his next presser….
