US guns vacationing in Mexico

| December 14, 2010

ROS sent us a link to a series in the Washington Post, “The Hidden Life of Guns” that I’ve been following the last few months about US guns purchased legally from gun shops ending up in the Mexican drug wars and nationwide crimes. I’ll admit that the Post did a lot of work uncovering the trails of gun ownership, but it’s all just wheel-spinning.

Their articles all begin the same way – ominous hints at some nefarious activity by legal gun dealers, tons of firearms making their way to the drug gangs that all lead to the same conclusion. The gun dealers were following all of the laws and doing their due diligence in gun transfers. For example;

Carter, 76, has operated four Carter’s Country stores in the Houston metropolitan area over the past half-century. In the past two years, more than 115 guns from his stores have been seized by the police and military in Mexico.

And as you read further into the story;

A high number of traces does not necessarily signal wrongdoing. It could be the result of sales volume, geography or clientele. Carter’s Country, for instance, is the largest independent gun retailer in the region. Most experts and ATF officials agree that the majority of dealers are law-abiding.

So, the only conclusion a reader can arrive at is that gun laws need to be tightened. Only a few of the gun dealers who the Post profiles are accused of actual wrong-doing, so like I said, the Post is making the point that laws need to be changed. But, if a gun dealer sells a gun to a qualified buyer, what could possibly be changed? The gun dealer would have to shadow every purchaser to make sure that he doesn’t transfer ownership to an unqualified buyer, wouldn’t he?

I’m sure the Post would just rather end gun sales and disarm us all, because that has worked so well every where it’s tried. Washington, DC, Detroit, Chicago, the UK, Canada.

Just wishing guns away doesn’t work.

Every once in a while, the DC police will have a gun buy-back program and more than thirty years after their hand gun ban, they’ll still collect a couple of thousand guns.

The Post is committing journalistic jackassery. I don’t think the national Democrats are foolish enough to try to take our guns – but they’re welcome to try.

Our local rag is doing the same thing, following a gun from it’s sale to today. At the end of this mutual circle jerk, the only conclusion I can draw is that, if only guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. Sorry to trot that worn out cliche out, but it’s the truth.
I’m always amazed that someone who doesn’t know which end of a gun makes the flash knows what’s best for me and mine when it comes to what I should do for self-defense. I live in the country, the country sheriff’s department has two cars on the road overnight, that’s it, and the MSP post has one. When seconds count, law enforcement is only an hour away. But, that’s a whole different thing, the commissioners don’t want to fund law enforcement.
And, you should add Australia to your list of places where gun control has worked so well, Jonn.

Just wishing guns away doesn’t work.

Jonn, you’ve covered a LOT of ground with that line.

Therein lies bizarro world. Or as the sages of old have observed: “Wish in one hand and shit in the other – see which fills up faster?”

What people don’t seem to realize is that there will always be violence, war, poverty, hunger, sickness and death. Nothing that we can do will totally eliminate it. What we can do is the best job possible in defending ourselves and those not as fortunate as us. Feed those who can can’t feed themselves. Heal those who are sick and provide training for those who are poor to make a better life for themselves. In other words, provide the opportunities for the human race to advance and better themselves. But it is up to the people to take advantage of those opportunities. If they choose not to, then why should those of us who do be punished? If I choose to pick up a firearm to defend me and mine, then that should be my choice. If somebody else chooses not to, then why should they force their choice onto me?

The whole story is a steaming pile of BS with absolutely no point.

Money drives commerce. Cartels have enough money to buy whatever they want. SW states having porous borders with Mexico makes logistical sense for any organization attempting to move weaponry in quantity.

Seal the f*#%^&@#^T) border and the number of US sourced weapons in Mexico will fall precipitously. Not the total number of weapons, just those sourced in the US.

…if a gun dealer sells a gun to a qualified buyer, what could possibly be changed?

I thought I might answer that (knowing full well most people here already knew the answer) Then I saw you did it yourself….

I’m sure the Post would just rather end gun sales and disarm us all…

Hence, the point of the article…

Seal the f*#%^&@#^T) border and the number of US sourced weapons in Mexico will fall precipitously. Not the total number of weapons, just those sourced in the US.

c’mon Spooky….stop making sense…the Dems need more voters don’t ya know…

DaveO

Why seal the border? Why not absorb Mexico into the USA, and make “Mexico” an item in the history books?

Blue Cyclone

Something strange here. In drug smuggling, it is the US’s fault because the demand is too high but in the gun smuggling area, it is the US’s fault because the supply is too big. You can’t have it both ways unless your real intent is just to blame the US for every problem.

ROS

Mexico is part of the USA. We call it Texas.

Now we have Justice Breyer showing up every five minutes peddling his tome and trying to force feed words down the throat of John Adams corpse. I’m sure WaPo is digging having
that ally along with the rest of The Unicorn and rainbow cluster fucks. If you come for mine…bring yours!

Doc Bailey

I would really like to know, why for the love of all that is Holy, what proposal they have now to counteract this perceived inadequacy.

Paraphrasing a comment someone left on the WaPo story:

When drugs come into the U.S. from Mexico, it’s the U.S.’s fault for creating the demand. When guns go from the U.S. into Mexico, it’s the U.S.’s fault for creating the supply. Talk about your double standards.

This series is running while the U.N. gun ban treaty is being discussed and firearms legislation is being discussed at the state level…. Coinky-dink? I think not.

Doc Bailey

notice the terminology used. “Weapon” not “gun” or “Firearms” Small words can make a big difference.

Criminals are going to do what they are going to do. There are no laws that will stop them. The gun dealers, as long as they follow the proscribed procedures, can’t be held accountable for every little thing that happens with a gun. Would the control freaks hold an automobile dealer accountable because a vehicle they sold was used in a crime?? I think not.

Not totally on topic but I’m reading this as I’m going through the process of applying for a firearms license in New Jersey and it’s becoming very frustrating. I had to make an appt at the police station, while there I was informed that they don’t take fingerprints on site anymore??? So I then had to go online to find a local facility and make an appt with them. 2 weeks later, which was the first available, I went in with all my paperwork but I didn’t fill something out correctly online to match the documents in hand so I was turned away and incurred an $11.00 fee. I just rescheduled the fingerprinting which will cost $62.00 but have to wait another 2 weeks for that appt. Then the police told me it would take 3 to 4 months before they make a determination on my application. I’m thinking they might hope a number of people don’t want to go through all the BS and just give up… it’s only making me more determined to get it. Cursing NJ and it’s bureaucratic insanity!!
