Happy Birthday, Navy

| October 13, 2010

BooRadley, a Navy veteran herself, wrote to remind us that today is the Navy’s Birthday;

U.S. Navy Secretary Ray Maybus is scheduled to speak at a celebration of the Navy’s 235th anniversary aboard the North Carolina Battleship Memorial in Wilmington.

The StarNews of Wilmington reported that Maybus is among those scheduled to attend Tuesday’s celebration. Maybus leads both the Navy and the Marine Corps.

My father served in the Navy on the USS Saipan – the first carrier to launch jets he told me. I was born at the end of his stint at Pensacola NAS.

The only Navy story I know from history is that the first naval combat commander was actually an Army officer – Benedict Arnold. He commanded the building of a fleet of ships at Skenesborough (now Whitehall, NY) and sailed against the British up Lake Champlain and fought a naval battle at Valcour Island near Pittsburgh Plattsburgh on October 11, 1776, which forced the British to delay their assault to New York City until Spring.

It was actually near Plattsburgh, NY not Pittsburgh. Still a good little American History tidbit…

Happy Birthday to the Navy, who saw my father’s service in the 80s aboard the destroyer USS Caron, the first ship to reach Grenada during Operation Urgent Fury. His ship also rained down hell on Beirut not long after.

Happy Birthday Navy!!

I can imagine a no more rewarding career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worth while, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction: “I served in the United States Navy.” – John F. Kennedy.

Happy Birthday to the Canoe Club (affectionately) and my shipmates!!

AW1 Tim

And the same to all my shipmates! It was a great adventure, and one that I was sad to see end.

And there was also the Arnold Expedition up through Maine to the Maritimes, with Paul Revere as a less-than-leading figure in the affair. Revere was damned near casheired for cowardice and sent to prison, but wiggled out through his various friends with Congress Critters and Continental Officers, etc….. Some things haven’t changed at all… 🙂

Operator Dan beat me to the punch (line) with his post.

I’ve been out just a bit over 41 years now, but there’s little doubt those years in the Navy still impact my life.

Happy Birthday USN!

I’ll wear my Dixie Cup for while today.

Happy Birthday Navy, you done good!!! My dad did 30 years in the Navy and served on the old diesel boats in the Sea of Japan on several cruises during WWII. Later he worked on the project to put missiles on the boats, beginning testing with the (Russian) Loon and then the Regulus missiles. He served in and around Subs his entire career. He figures he will wear his uniform one more time and has it all pressed and ready to go when that day comes.
