Management company tells vet to remove flag

| May 27, 2010

More than a few people sent me a link to this story about a rental management company which has ordered a veteran and his wife to take down the flag in their window after memorial Day. Apparently the flag has hung there since the young soldier returned from his tour in Iraq;

Charlie Price, 28, served tours of duty as a combat engineer in Iraq and Kosovo, his wife said. To honor his eight years of service, she began decorating their apartment during Veterans Day in November. An American flag topped off the display, she said.

“I knew it made Charlie really proud to see that,” she said. “And this isn’t something new. This has been up for quite some time now.”

Veterans’ groups were furious at the realtors’ refusal to allow the flag to fly.

“As a veteran, it sickens me that the Dawn and Charlie Price’s building management company would imply that the American flag could be construed as offensive by their residents,” said Ryan Gallucci, a spokesman for AmVets.

Now, I’m not as outraged as I’d be if the flag was on the price’s own property, but a flag in the window clearly isn’t hurting anyone;

“This policy was developed to insure that we are fair to everyone as we have many residents from diverse backgrounds,” the statement read. “By having a blanket policy of neutrality we have found that we are less likely to offend anyone and the aesthetic qualities of our apartment communities
are maintained.”

Why…do they have apartments that are in other countries? That’s just ridiculous – that’s not a policy of neutrality. It’s a policy of capitulation. I’ll grant them that it’s their property, so they can do what they want, but at least base the policy on the possession of some balls.

The fair thing to do would be to allow everyone to put up what they want in their windows. But it’s not really about diversity, it’s about not offending anyone.

Hey, management company, who about not offending Americans or is that not “diverse” enough?

Thor

If the American flag offends someone here in America, they need to go elsewhere!!!

Joe

Oh boy, here we go again. Isn’t this a repeat of the guy in Florida (?) a few months ago who erected a big flag pole in his front yard? I’ll bet if you read the CC&R’s of the apartment, there’s a part in there about the proper display flags. But I guess in your world rock star vets don’t have to abide by the rules the rest of us have to live by…..

Mikey

If this was the policy before hand, then theres nothing wrong with enforcing it. Im actually on the side of the management company. If this couple doesnt like the rules, they can move. If someone sets up a regulation and you know it from the onset, then shame on you for deciding you want to go against it.

Joe, once again, wrong. RIF.

Fuck that company.

RAT ROD

WTF????! OVER, America Love It or Leave It. SCREW THAT Co. THAT VET EARNED THE RIGHT TO DISPLAY HIS FLAG PERIOD!!!!!!!! DAMN POLITICAL CORRECTNESS IS GOING TO DESTOY THIS COUNTRY. Man that really hacks me off. When are we going to say ENOUGH

Joe

So RAT ROD,
I guess all men were created equal, but some are more equal, huh?

Joe

And of course you would be one of those men, Jonn? How convenient.

Jacobite

I’m afraid I’m with Mikey on this one. He should have been more aware of the terms of his lease. What bothered me about this story was how he was being catagorized as a ‘victim’ for not being alowed to break the rules, something suspiciously like my beef with illegal immigration and the way IT’S portrayed in the media.
That’s not to say he doesn’t have the right to try and get things changed, which appearantly he did.

Joe

Now here’s the kind of dispute with an HOA where I think the soldier was treated very unfairly, to say the least. You’d think someone in the community probably knew he was in Iraq, and could at least have tried to contact the wife in person.

I don’t always side with HOA’s. In the following case I think the HOA could have used much better judgement:

What the hell does “diverse backgrounds” have to do with anything? The American flag is the symbol of one of the few countries where people of “diverse backgrounds” get to live together in peace. The rental company is full of douches.

And in reference to that Mother Jones article: what the F? How are these people not punished for screwing over active-duty military and their families?

Bubblehead Ray

Guess I’m going to have to change my moniker. I’m surprised it lasted this long.

“But you don’t has to call me Johnson”

I suggest he marches into his boss’s office and demands he remove the offensive photos on his wall of his ugly horse-faced wife and buck toothed kids!

Sheesh, give me an effing break. My husband is 100% disabled OIF veteran and this horse shit makes my blood boil!
