Gun safety?

| October 4, 2025

Y’all may (well, those of you who actually read to the end of our columns) recall an article back on August 21st TAH  in which I mentioned a new player in the gun safety training market.  Everytown for Gun Safety, Mikey Bloomberg’s wholly-owned gun ban group.

“Train Smart” is rolling out several segmented lessons, including “The Smart Guide to Buying a Gun,” which features a one-hour course for prospective gun buyers who “want the facts about gun ownership without a sales pitch.” Everytown will teach those gun buyers about why people own guns, facts surrounding gun ownership, secure storage, protecting a home, “universal” guns safety rule and what to look for in a gun.BFA

Who would know better – after all, their legal pronouncements and gun nomenclature is all first-rate (ask them) and surely with all that accumulated wisdom they would be ideal at teaching gun safety. Well, maybe not. More like “assault weapons bad!” But hey, Mikey wants them to give it that good old college try.

Who doesn’t want guns handled more safely? I sure as hell do, I still have an occasional nightmare over that woman in Houston who had real issues on our range and was waving a loaded 9 with her finger on the trigger- covered me, her kid, her husband seemingly forever till I could get her hand back on the bench and the gun out of it. Maybe only a few seconds but a very LONG few seconds. Bet there isn’t an RSO alive who hasn’t had THAT happen. Please,  more safety!

So let’s assume everyone wants everyone to act safer with their guns. Everytown normally wants your guns confiscated, locked in a fireproof box, and totally unobtainable, so you would think they would be all over pushing that viewpoint, right?

You’d be wrong.

A revealing article in USA Today last week reported that Everytown for Gun Safety’s new “firearms training” program, Train SMART, “met stiff opposition from [Everytown’s] own members and longtime supporters.”

The reason, as the article made clear, is simple. Gun control advocates don’t want “harm reduction” when it comes to gun ownership; they want “abstinence.” In other words, they see Everytown’s firearm safety training as a betrayal because it tacitly acknowledges there is a place for firearms in America. What Everytown’s supporters want, however, is to put an end to gun ownership — period.

One is quoted as calling Everytown’s program “hurtful and insulting to survivors.” She elaborated: “Our mission is to reduce gun violence and keep people from having guns in their homes, and here you are, giving a gun safety class that encourages gun ownership. You can’t have it both ways.”

Another was “so enraged by the Train SMART launch she resigned her position leading a local survivor group.” It felt, she said, “like a kick in the teeth. All these years working on expanded background checks and how we know having a gun in the home won’t make you safer … this doesn’t make any sense.”

Everytown’s president, John Feinblatt was as dismissive of his members’ concerns as he normally is to gun owners.

Any new program, he told USA Today, comes with a mix of “curiosity, enthusiasm, and skepticism.”

Feinblatt likewise unconvincingly tried to rebrand his own organization — which pursues sweeping bans on America’s most popular firearms and harsh prior restraints on the ownership of other guns — as a “wide tent … as opposed to being … anti-gun or hardline gun control.  BFA II

Yeah, pull the other one.  They’re not hardline antigunners… any more than MADD favors drunken driving. I guess it’s at least consistent that Feinblatt seems to treat everyone as beneath contempt. I’m thinking Everytown’s safety training will be gone by the New Year.

A Bloomberg-backed organization providing misleading or false information about firearms.

I am shocked, shocked.

Army-Air Force Guy

After years of trying to keep the Eddie Eagle program out of schools, now they want to talk about “true” firearms safety….whatever.

A Proud Infidel®™

TRUE common sense gun control involves factors like breathing, grip and trigger squeeze.

Army-Air Force Guy

Can’t disagree.

Get your foot in the door…Train SMART alienating other Everytown members might generate a spark of legitimacy in conventional gun safety circles. Start out with the basics: gun selection, proper storage, etc. First-time gun owners can always use a little guidance. Over time, warp those basics into the restrictive measures anti-gunners want as a stopgap before they can simply outright ban guns.

“Select a gun and ammunition that fits you (size, caliber, ease of slide manipulation, etc.)” can morph into “No one needs more than six rounds of 9mm hardball”.

“Always store your firearm where children can’t access it” can eventually become “store your firearm unloaded, in a safe that only you have access to, and with ammunition in a separate locked container.”

Some states already have laws similar to those above, but if Train SMART becomes a “go-to” gun safety program, within a few years they can advocate for everyone in their program to adhere to such asinine things for self-defense. I know that when Metthew and Methany come tweaking in the door at 0200, I want to fumble with two locked containers to load my six rounds of overpenetration.

But no, I’ve got a handful of gun safety classes under my belt. I’ve also got common sense and have taught my kids since they were young how to handle firearms. Now that they’re older, they are all doing pretty well, but I’d definitely lock up my stuff if any of the kids seemed headed down the wrong path (wrong crowds, drugs, crime, etc.). As it stands, I’ve got who knows how many guns within reach at night. Train SMART can indoctrinate the clueless, but they won’t deceive us.

Question 1- what do you want the gun for?

fm2176

Trick question. Self-defense? Let the professionals handle that; when you need help now, the cops are only minutes away. Catch-22 with Train SMART: if you’re a responsible gun owner, you’ll avoid taking the law into your own hands. After all, is your property worth someone’s life? If the criminals intend to make you the target of their crimes, then you have the duty to retreat. If you aren’t going to use a gun for self-defense, then why own one in the first place? Why risk arming the very criminals that your undertrained self was hoping to deter?

Buy your gun (a Hi-Point will suffice, all you need is seven rounds), lock it up, and have 911 on speed dial. When the recently defunded police finally show up in all their racist glory, be glad that you’re privileged enough to solicit a response. Don’t worry, the prosecutor will work with the judge to ensure the criminals get a light sentence befitting upstanding citizens.

That’s like “Chickens for KFC” and Mikey Bloomberg, Good Lord, what a conceited POS, wasn’t he the one who said that “Farming is the easiest thing on Earth, just throw the seeds on the ground and wait!” during a DNC debate? IMO he’s about as likeable as Al Gore Junior, a toothache and my ex-Wife all put together!

I wish my ex-Wife upon him.

Roh-Dog

Yeah, farming is super easy! That’s why South Africa and Rhodesia (no relation) are thriving!

If it wasn’t for Mayor Mini Mike’s soda mandates I would have caught the diebeedus and died several times over probably.

Bless that man’s evil little void where humans have cardiac tissue.

SFC D

I wish him a plural marriage, add in my ex wife.

Thunderstixx

We should take up a collection, we could come up with some real winners around this place !!!

Thunderstixx

I’ll toss in my last GF, you know, the psychotic one that I had to pull a GUN on to get her to leave me alone!

A Terminal Lance Coolie

I’ll add my last ex-GF. She tried selling me on BLM, tried telling me her kid was autistic (she goes to a mental health clinic for four days and a friend and I turn her screaming hellion into a decently behaved kid. Much running and pushing was done, to uncaring response), and was generally an irresponsible psycho. Didn’t last long.

See also “Queers for Palestine”.

Toxic Deplorable Racist SAH Neanderthal

Enjoying all the internecine squabbling in the background, as the two “Everytown” groups fight among themselves.

BUT….
Has anyone actually watched any of these “gun safety” videos? Are they actually good common sense? Bogus anti-gun crap? Or decent lessons with a back door twist for the unaware?

“how we know having a gun in the home won’t make you safer”

Emotive reasoning strikes again.

SFC D

I can easily prove them wrong.

Break into my house when I’m home. Or when MRS D is home.

Grunt

100%! Or to add, all the times the potential of an armed response deters deadly conduct.

Example: you don’t hear about carjacking epidemics in Dallas.

But people decide and vote based on “we know” and “we feel” and “can’t we just…” and, well, here we fucking are.

I volunteered at my local gun club as RSO once.
Once. Brrrrrr…….

He’s Baaaaack. Your Favorite Boomer Fudd at the Local Range. #range #fudd #guns #humor

I renewed my RSO card for some reason. I hear the range we qualify at is pretty cool and always looking for help, but I don’t know about a gun club.

AW1Ed

Good luck. I saw every one of these dudes:

The first one was scary enough but at least got a
quick reaction.
“Up and down range” needs to be taught that moron before he can have ammo.
